So I finally broke down and booked a rental car through Hotwire last week with their "one day only" sale. I had been watching prices for quite a while and they were lower that day than before. Since it was a "special rate" it's non refundable.

Today the same car is $40 cheaper! Nothing I can do about it but it still stinks! Grrr.....

That is why I never us Hotwire or Priceline, unless it is a last minute booking. If you book directly with the car rental agencies, you can cancel and rebook (unless you prepay). I tend to book, cancel, and rebook many times leading up to a trip.

I avoid hotwire and priceline for that very reason. I find the closer my trip gets the rental car companies lower their rates. Past two years i have waited until the week we are leaving to book my car. In 2011 we paid $84 for a mid size for a week. This year we paid $86 for a weekly mid size.

One trip, I checked before I left for the airport... I found a cheaper rate, so I cancelled and rebooked the day of my flight!

The fewer non-refundable items you have for a trip the better!!

If you do book something non-refundable... DON'T. LOOK. BACK. If you didn't know the price had dropped by $40, you would have been fine, right? So why torture yourself?
