So - on descent today - one of my ears didn't "pop" so I can only hear well out of one side. Any remedies?

I've tried (to no avail):

pinching my nose and blowing
drinking something
Chewing something
yawning

Help!

Only thing I can think of to make ears pop is to take a dive into the deep end of the pool... That could make it go.

Have you tried any of the earwax removal kits? I don't know if that would help.

That happened to me 2 weeks ago when we were there. We flew jet blue and i never had an issue before with the ears. The only thing that worked for me was to blow my nose. Hope that helps.

I flew home with a cold during my last trip and was in agony for a couple of days. In my quest to alleviate the pain, I came across an old flight attendant trick.

Get a paper/plastic cup (sometimes I used a small ceramic drinking glass). Thoroughly wet a paper towel and microwave a few seconds until it is hot. Place the waded up, hot paper towel in the bottom of the cup/glass. Now place the open end of the cup over the affected ear. The steam from the hot towel should help to equalize the pressure in your ear.

I hope it helps!

we're currently on property -so it might be tough to find a microwave - but I'll try.

Tugging on the offending ear lobe works for me. You may need to try this several times. Start out gently, then tug until it pops. :lmao:

Don't blow too hard - you can damage your eardrum. If all your "manual" methods fail, try antihistimines. This happened to me on my honeymoon and that's what my dr. suggested.

Most food courts have a microwave somewhere but what might end up being the easiest option for you is asking for an extra drinking/coffee cup, put a few napkins at the bottom, and then add some hot water from the hot tea/coffee option at the food court. Just make sure there is no excess water at the bottom so you don't burn yourself! The napkins just need to be wet and hot enough to generate some steam.

I think the food courts usually have them, and the first aid/baby care centers too. The first aid place might have other ideas as well. Good luck!! I'm in the middle of a bad cold right now and my left ear is plugged too - seems to pop every few hours though, and I'm just at work, so who cares if I can hear! :lmao: I'd probably rather not hear anything!

I feel your pain. The first time I went to Disney I had a really bad cold/sinus infection. I couldn't hear for 2 days and my hubby kept telling me "stop yelling". Now I take sudafed before the plane ride- that really helps!!

That used to happen to me all the time... I've got no remedy, but if this is a recurring problem, I'd suggest "earplanes"... they are earplugs that you put in right as the plane begins it's decent... they are a lifesaver for me!!!

Take an ibupfrofen for pain and for me when I take a nap and when I wake up it's better.

Hope you don't have what happened to me on our trip to DL 3 years ago. I thought it was just my ear not "popping". Did all the usual things, and still couldn't hear out of it. Got the ear wax removals kits, helped some, but eventually found out I had an ear infection, when I spent part of my vacation in an Anaheim ER. I never realized how painful those can be. Easily more painful than when I have separated my shoulder on numerous occassions.

I've only had this happen to me once. Both of my ears were so plugged I couldn't hear a thing. I tried all the usual remedies with no success. Bedtime came and I was actually afraid that they would hurt more when I laid down. I was in bed for less than a minute and leaned out to pick something up - thus making my head somewhat upside down. Immediately, both ears unplugged. May have just been a coincidence but if mine ever plug again, this is what I'll try. Hope yours unplugs sooner than later.

Its the first day so I wouldn't worry too much. I've had it where it cleared up sleeping overnight.

are these easy to find at a drugstore? I'd like to get some for our july trip - haven't been on a plane in 9 years - I'm scared! :scared1:

Pull the lobe of your ears straight out/away from your head. Straighten out that eustachain tube to release the fluid that accumulated.

Ya, for sure :thumbsup2
I can vouch for their effectiveness too. Just make sure to get 'em as soon as you feel any decent. I was a little late in doing so this last trip and my right ear was useless for 24 hours.

Thanks for the tips! I will def. do that. I hate when my ears won't pop. :headache:
