My beloved Maine Coon cat has started pooping around my house with increasing frequency. She is three years old and this has just become a problem in the past few weeks. Prior to this, she would occasionally poop around the house but this is happening a few times weekly. We have not changed the brand of litter and her box is cleaned regularly. Yesterday, I found poop on my bedroom floor and it was obvious that she urinated as well. I cleaned the wood but I know that cat urine is a pervasive smell so I am worried that this will become a habit with her. She does not do it in the same places consistently. I don't want to turn her into an outdoor cat but I am completely frustrated. Any suggestions?

I hate to be graphic, but I am not quite sure if she is pooping because she is sick? If she has diarreha, then give her metamucil. This worked great on my dog after many trips to the vet because of colitis with also a change in food. If she is not sick and just marking her territory, I would use IckyPoo. I got it at the vets and it does clean very well and also would not leave a smell. Sorry, I do not know enough about cats to really help.

Your girls are adorable!

She is upset that she is now 21 years old and you aren't letting her party. She just wants to have some wild years before she becomes too old to enjoy life. Give her a little bowl of Jack Daniels and take her to a rave party....then she will be cured.

This came straight from my best friend Sonya: The Pet Psychic. I hope it helps!

Is she eating ok? Are there any other symptoms?

Maybe you should change litter brands. Some brands are perfumed and can irritate the cat's "private areas" , therefore the cat will start to avoid the box. Even if she was fine with this brand all this time, there could of been changes in the chemistry/ingredients in the product that you may not be aware of.

I'd get her checked out at the vet just in case something is really wrong. good luck!

Have you made her mad? I have 8 cats of which 4 are Maine Coons and they have the worst TEMPER!!!!

I have found a surprise or two when either DH or myself make one in particular mad. Its like, you locked me in the bathroom by accident so when I get out I'm pooping right by your shoe!!

She never EVER does it unless we have ticked her off. Shes the absolute QUEEN on the UNIVERSE....LOL!!!

Luckily this only happens very very occasionally and like I said when she gets mad at us.

One of my cats started weeing in the house about a year ago (we think it was because more cats moved into our street and they come in the garden so he is marking his teritory.) Anyway we were told to put bowls of dry food around the house in the places we have seen him wee. Aparently cats will not go to the toilet near their food. We found this worked (although we do have quite a few bowls of dry cat food around the house.) As it is dry food it does not smell so you do not notice it.
Good luck.

Is she the only cat in the house? If not, get at least 1 more litter box and put it in/around the most frequented soiling areas... Maybe she just wants a change of scenery, and more litter boxes in different places in the house. I recommend one box downstairs and one upstairs if you have a 2 story, or if a 1 story, 1 in each end of the house. We usually don't just have 1 bathroom in a house, so why should they?

As far as the smell left, I swear by Nature's Miracle-- you can get it at PetsMart or similar stores.

Don't worry, my cat went through this phase where she was urinating ON MY BED-- I would come home after a long work day, and WHAMMO-- not a fun thing to come home to. I got an additional box, put it downstairs, and we haven't had any more problems.

Also, you may want to think about if there have been any changes to her environment-- new pet, new baby, new house, new people in her life.

We had a cat that did this when angry... he became my sisters cat, and when she went to camp for a week, he left her surprises all around her room and in her bed.

Has anything changed at home to make your kitty mad? She is obviously trying to tell you something...

That same cat started to do this many years later, it turned out he developed kidney issues and it was a cry for medical help. If I were you, I'd fork out the cash for a quick Vet visit, just to ensure things are a-okay. If they are okay, then I would try the things others have suggested, since you know its not a medical reason ;)

Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be!

Oh, and I bought that Natures Miracle as well for our new puppy and the stuff is grand. I suggest you get a bottle to help with cleanup, removes the smell completely =)

Our cat did this too. He started about 6 months after we moved to a new house. I took him to the vet and he had a slight urinary tract infection. Got that taken care of but he continued to be bad. He would do it while you were looking at him-- his favorite spot was under DH's desk. Moved the box, kept it clean, placed 'things' at his favorite pee spots, nothing worked. He couldn't become an outside cat because we had several other cats in the neighborhood and ours was very territorial. Our vet said sometimes when they do this they are upset about something and it is very hard to break them of it.

Dh finally said somebody's got to go. My Mom lives out in the country so she volunteered to take him. He loves being an outside cat and is able to be outside without the worry of other cats/dogs or traffic.

Another Maine Coon owner here! Is it possible that your cat has turned EXTREMELY finicky about the cleanliness of her kitty box. We've always had cats, so we're used to keeping the kitty box clean, but with our Maine Coon, if we don't have it SPOTLESS, he lets us know by pooping-right in front of us- outside the box. Fortunately we keep the box in the bathtub. I've never had such a finicky cat!

I am so glad to see this thread.

One of my manx cats does this. At the moment I think she's protesting because we changed cat litter (the last batch we got was bad, just wasn't working properly). She'll usually go for 2 or so weeks with no incident and then suddenly there it is - a puddle or a "gift". Or both.

At one point there was some blood in both, and we took her to the vet who said she had a UT infection and put her on a very expensive ph balanced cat food that we were supposed to keep her on for life. Problem is we have 4 cats, and it's impossible to feed the food just to her, or keep her from eating the other's food. It got too expensive to feed all the cats the ph food, so we switched to I think it's Cat Chow ph balance. 2 of them have put on a lot of weight, so we've since switched to a lite catfood. Now if they made a light PH balanced food I'd be set!

I knew that some of her "accidents" weren't though when she peed on my suitcase! She also peed once on my fiance when he was staying the night. He's never liked her since then. (go figure).
