Grocery Store Etiquette...WWYD?

What do you do?

  • Start unloading as soon as I can. I do not wait for the person in front of me to finish unloading.

  • Wait for the person in front of me to finish unloading, then unload my cart.

  • Other...there's always an other!

I thought this would be a good DIScussion ;)

I ran over to the grocery store this afternoon to pick up a few odds and ends. I didn't have much and it wasn't very busy, so I hit the check out line with no one in front of me.

As I'm unloading, a guy comes up behind me and starts unloading his things about 6" from the back of where my items end... I still had things in my cart, so I quickly pulled the divider and pushed his things back a little bit.

Then as I was leaving, I pushed my cart up a bit to put my receipt in my wallet since this man was obviously in a hurry (he also sighed loudly when the cashier grabbed my 5 coupons...) and he bumped his cart into me!

Was this man rude or am I nuts? If someone is still unloading in front of me, I wait for them to finish before I start. So what do you do? Do you wait for them to finish or do you start unloading your cart?

I usually just go ahead and start unloading, if there enough room, I usually put up the divider, I wouldn't run over anyone, in the process

He sounds like he was in a hurry and being a bit of a dingus about it. In the grand scheme though...meh.

I guess I wouldn't have even noticed if he started at the back end of the belt instead of *right* behind my items.

Very true. I didn't even bother saying anything to him about it. Just kind of rolled my eyes and went on about my day. But thought it was interesting enough to bring here :goodvibes

I wait until they're done unloading. I'm an impatient person but that guy was just plain rude. I'm not about to run you over with my cart to get through the line a little quicker.

What really irks me though is when people come through with a huge cart full of stuff in the self check-out lanes. :sad2:

I had this happen to me a while back, except when I asked the woman to please wait, since I still had a full cart, she was rude and said that the cashier just needed to ring my items faster. Somehow the laws of physics were completely lost on her.

This is what I do.

I assume you were almost finished since you said you only had a few things.

I wait until the person is done.

You only had a few items and it was easy for you to grab the bar so, I probably would have done the same.

Now the bumping and sighing, might have got me.:rolleyes1

Wait until they are finished unloading, put the divider down, and than unload your cart! If you are bumped by their cart- more then once- bump back!!

I unload from the end so no one can put anything on the belt until I'm done.

Can't help you with the cart hitting.

eta: I also stand way back from the person in front of me so that I don't crowd their financial transaction. I bet that annoys people.

I had 2 reusable bags full of things. So I had a decent amount, but not a full cart by any means. I needed some of the space he was claiming though :)

He was rude and, depending on my mood, I might have been inclined to let him know. But it really depends.

To avoid any question on whether or not I am done, I park my buggy at the start of the conveyor belt. And then when I am finished unloaded, I put up my divider and then move ahead. This helps me unload from the back of the cart more easily. It really helps to avoid those who don't realize you are not done or don't care if you are not done unloading.

I wait until the person in front of me finishes unloading their things before I start unloading mine.

I always wait. Yet, some people like to be shoved up my bottom when I'm paying the cashier or using my card. Back up crazy!

I once had a lady come up and start unloading my cart from the rear as I was unloading from the front. I told her to stop and she stated "Well, I'm in a hurry".

I always wait until they are finished unloading. He was rude. I can't believe he bumped you with his cart! :scared1: Scary grocery store man.

I wait. But the customers who irritate me are the ones in front of me who just have one to three items - yes, in a regular lane - who refuse to put their items on the belt. Eventually, I'll ask: "excuse me, could you please put that down so I can start unloading?". If they won't, I put up the divider and start anyway.
