We're planning to take a taxi from our hotel (ASMovies) on the evening of the day we arrive in Orlando. We figured that buying bottled water (we drink a lot of that on a day-to-day basis), some breakfast-type items, some daytime snacks and some special treats OUT of WDW property would save us a decent amount of money (we've researched pricing both in and out of the World).

My questions are:

Which grocery store is the closest to ASMovies?

Which grocery store do you prefer for your off-property groceries?

Anyone with a ballpark figure for how much the taxi will be round-trip between ASMovies and the closest grocery store?

I will also post this on the Resorts board.

Thank you so much for your help - much appreciated! :flower3:

Taxi's arent Cheap but the service that Garden Grocer offers apparently is unsurpassed and really not worth the trip yourself.....

Check out www.gardengrocer.com if you already havent...

We like to go to Winn Dixie out on Vineland I reccomend taking the resort but to DTD and getting a cab from there or even walking to the Crossroads centre and grab a cab from there if you do not have a car to use. Ask the cabbie to take you to Winn Dixie there is also an ABC Liquor out there in front of teh Winn Dixie and a Papa Johns pizza shop. The cab ride back to DTD should only be about 12 bucks max probably less then you can hop on teh resort bus back and you have all your supplies.

I have placed an order with gardengrocer and it was a $12 delivery fee, the prices for the water and food are comparable to the grocery you would take a cab to, they will deliver your food and bell services will hold your food until you get there, it will save you cab fair and alot of time.

The $12 delivery fee would be well worth the time it would take to take the bus to DTD and lugging your groceries on and off the bus....
Be sure to report back on what the taxi's cost should you use one...

Even if you took teh cab all teh way back to All Stars it wouldn't be too much more than a 12 spot. We took a cab from All Stars to Belz for under 20 bucks.

if you say it is only $ 12 from the All stars to the Belz outlet than why suggest taking the WDW transportation and then a cab to get groceries??... I do not believe for one second a cab from All Stars to the Belz outlet is $ 12

but if you say so....

to the OP here is a link to give you an iea of current taxi rates from Mears

I dont think they are out of line in prices, I believe it would cost a small fortune, if not why would people use garden grocer or order thier water from Costco and Staples etc.......

We used garden grocer and bought the same kinda stuff you want. Don't do the cab thing, not worth it when you can order and get delivery for 12 bucks. The service is great, so is the food, very fresh!!!!!

You may want to read that again I never once said it was only 12 dollars to Belz I said it was under 20 but I digress as the inlaws took a cab from Win Dixie last Oct and it cost thel 9.85 to get from Win Dixie to Saratoga Springs. So I am guessing an additional 3 or 4 bucks would be about what it would take to get to the All Stars.

As for the Disney transport to get groceries why not it is quick and easy to get down to DTD and then we walk out to the grocery store if we don't have a car (usually do) but then we stop and walk around DTD before we head out to get groceries. Not to mention you can get other cabs besides Mears which happen to be the most expensive around the area from what I have seen.

Thank you all very much for your replies! I think gardengrocer.com is a great idea, but my SIL and I really want to be able to "see" the stuff we're buying - only because so much of what's available in the US is not available here in BC kwim? We'll be going on the first evening we're there, leaving my children with my dh (I'm sure they'll be asleep toute de suite that night lol).

I've found a store called Goodings that is evidently within walking distance of Downtown Disney. If this is true, that would save us the cab fare one way, as we could take the bus from ASMo to DD and then walk from there (we'd take a cab back to ASMo afterwards though - who wants to walk carrying cases of water? lol).

Is Goodings really there? If so, is it any good? Or should we just go to Publix and pay for the cab fare twice? Or the Winn Dixie? Too many choices :rotfl2:

Thanks again for your help! :flower3:

We found that the prices were 'high'... sort of like "We know we're the closest store to WDW and the tourists won't have a choice but to pay our prices". We went for water and didn't buy any because of the price. Wound up going to the Publix (not sure if it's the same one you're thinking of). There's a Publix one mile north of the Crossroads, and the Winn-Dixie is about half of that, I think.

As for water, we now pack an empty bottle for each of us and lots of water flavouring. She doesn't like the taste of Orlando water and the flavouring cuts that out entirely. I don't drink as much water and I watch the amount of flavouring that I use, especially if it's made with artificial sugar. I can tolerate one bottle per day or so, but more than that reacts badly.

Jim.

Gooding's is at the Crossroads shopping center as you've discovered and this is within walking distance of DD. The prices are high but it's the closest.

There is a Winn-Dixie with more normal prices further north (from Crossroads) along Apopka-Vineland Road. Whether it's worth an extra 15 minutes of walking is a personal decision.

Publix is over on I-Drive at Vineland Avenue just across from the Orlando Premium Outlets. This is on the other side of I-4 from DD and too far to walk. This is the best of the best and has normal Orlando-area prices. (UsetheforceLuke referred to a Publix one mile north of Crossroads....not. There is one about 10 miles north.)

If you are going to shop at Goodings you may as well shop in the store in your resort the prices are about the same. I would reccomend Winn Dixie the prices are better than Publix and it is closer to get to than Publix.
