Ok. Usually we buy our meat from the butcher in a big package. It comes with around 68 pounds of beef, pork, and chicken for $150. This is a good deal and lasts us for a month. I feed three adults, one teen boy, and a 9 month old girl three meals a day. Though we don't have meat at all three meals. Anyway, Winn Dixie has been having BOGO sales on their meat and other sales too. I am looking get the best deal but I have no idea how much meat should cost! It has been so long since I have bought it in the grocery store. Can you guys tell me if these are good prices or not?

Chuck roast- $2.99 a pound
Ribeye- $5.99 a pound
Boneless chicken breasts- $4.59 a pound but are BOGO this week
ground beef- $1.99 a pound (but doesn't say fat content)
Pork chops- $3.69 a pound and are BOGO this week
Top round steak- $3.99 a pound

Thank you!! I just started the couponing thing and am feeling a little lost in all of this. I know prices depend on where you live but I would just like a general idea. Also, if you have a price point on other things too? Like Kellogs cereal will be half off and I have coupons so I will probably try to stock up there too. What about rice, pasta, frozen veggies, canned tomato puree? I used to just go to Walmart for everything but am finding that things are cheaper with sales and coupons elsewhere.

I think meat prices are probably pretty dependent upon your location. Here is what I consider stock up worth y prices for our area...
Chuck roast- $2.49 a pound
Ribeye- $5.99 a pound
Boneless chicken breasts- $1.99 a pound
ground beef- $1.99 a pound
Pork chops- $2.49 a pound
Top round steak- ?? IDK, we don't buy it.

I can find these prices about once every three months and try to stock up accordingly. I feed two adults and a two girls 11 and 13, with a regular additional 13 yo girl and an occasional additional 11 yo girl and an occasional extra male adult. We spend on average less than $100/mo on meat.

I am in MD and I know it is going to vary widely by location. I'm gonna put in what I can now and add the rest tonight after DH gets home since he is a meatcutter at Safeway he knows first hand our best prices locally. I don't buy all kind or cuts of meats.

Chicken Breast- $1.99
Ribeye Steaks- $4.99
But also because he is a meat cutter I know certain tips to do to ensure lower prices.
Such as I will buy a pork loin and have it but into center cut chops which makes the
Pork Chops- $1.99
I will get a london broil ground into hamburger so it is 97% lean beef
Hamburger- $1.99

Chuck Roast-Ill have to check
Top Round Steak-I'll have to check

These are my price points where I won't pay anything over this.

Thanks for the numbers. We are going to Sam's Club tonight so I will compare the per pound price from there too. I know the pork loin is much cheaper there and we will buy at least one of those. I want to say it is around $1.68 a pound at Sam's. I know my prices pretty well on most things but just not for meat.

For ground beef at a 1.99$ per pound, it's probably the lowest choice, with 20% or more of fat. 93/7 usually goes for 2.99 or higher. Although I have found it on sale for 1.99 at Target before.

My price point is $1.99 for meat. If it is more expensive than that I don't usually buy it. So your 68lbs for $150 averages out to $2.20 a lb. Pretty good.

I can also usually get whole roaster chickens for $.99 lb. I think as long as someone in the house likes dark meat it is good. And one of my stores sometimes has boneless skinless chicken thighs fo $.99 lb. I like that cause then I'm not paying for bones. Also
London Broil for $1.99.

By the way I live in a high cost of living area (Cape Cod, MA) and can still find good deals.

:rotfl: I'd get to buy chicken breast and London Broil once every 6-8 weeks and never get any other meat if I used that rule.

I wish I could get that price. Hamburger rarely goes below $2.30 here.

I do the $1.99 rule too. Every couple of weeks around here is when each meat goes on sale. All my fliers come in the Sunday paper and that's what I do first thing Sunday morning...read the paper. I see what the sales are for the week. These are the best and average prices for the meat I buy.

boneless/skinless Chicken breast $1.49 best, $1.69 average on sale
Chuck Roast $1.59 best, $2.29 average on sale (BOGO)
Ribeye $3.99 best, $4.99-$5.99 average on sale
Ground Chuck $.99 best, $1.59-$1.89 average
Whole chickens $.49 best, $.89 average

We don't really eat any other meats than those listed above. But, I do notice that if you like chicken legs they are over a dollar a pound, same with thighs, but if you buy leg quarters, they are always on sale from 39 cents up to 89 cents. Seems a better deal to buy the leg quarters and cut them yourself.

We love our ribeye steaks, so that is our over the $1.99 rule splurge item.

Yeah it can be a pain. Sometimes there isn't any meat on sale that low. I have an extra freezer in my basement and try to buy a couple of packages at a time when it is on sale. I'm not that great of a chef anyway so I sticking to chicken and pork chops most of the time is what my family gets!

Don't forget that Sams will chop the loin into chops for you. That is always how I get my pork chops.

All the prices listed above seem high to me.

my stock up price is below:
Chicken breasts-less than $2/lb
Ground beef-1.28 for 73/27 or will spend 1.69 for 85/15.
Round steak-2.49/lb
Roast-1.99/lb
steaks (boneless ribeye or strip)-4.99/lb

Meijer has boneless pork loin 1.49 lb this week-got 18 chops for under $6 as they cut the loins at no cost.

I have never been a fan of BOGO meat sales as you have to find 2 packages that weigh exactly the same to take full advantage of the offer. I would rather stock up at 1/2 price.
