Our first trip home is still a few months away - but DW is really on this planning kick right know. We are staying in a 1 BR with our 2 teens - both 17 - we are looking at saving some money on the food.

Any suggestions on how you have addressed this issue would be welcome.

Do you shop before arriving?

Do you have Disney shop for you?

Thanks for the advise

Don

If anyone knows of a grocery, too that carries soy milk, etc. for someone with a milk allergy that would be great! We would like to be able to eat breakfast in the room. Thanks!

We have our car, so we either shop at home and bring most meals already prepared, or easy to prepare, and will sometimes grocery shop when we get there (Publix, or Winn Dixie, same as home), but that seems to take away from some of our relaxation time, so I try to avoid that.

Disney is a fairly viable option IMO, but be aware that you will be paying more for the convenience of having WDW do it for you, as well as being limited in your selection. Others have faxed orders or e-mailed orders to groceries (I believe they have mentioned Albertson's, which is also good, just not cenvenient to me at home, so I'm not too familiar with Albertson's) to be picked up (on your way from the airport to WDW when taking a car service) or sometimes even delivered to you at WDW.

lenshanem, Soy milk is readily available at both stores I mentioned, and I know for sure that Publix carries "Silk" soy milk (the best tasting in my opinion, when I had to drink it for a year when my son was allergic to all dairy products)

If you are driving or renting a car a grocery trip would certainly be worthwhile.
My wife and I thoroughly plan our meals and figure any eating out plans than make a detailed list.
As soon as we get our room at OKW she begins the unpacking procedure while I take the ride to Publix.
This way it is done and overwith and does not interfere with the relaxation of the vacation.

Hi there!

There was a recent post titled "the quickest way to get groceries while at OKW."

A good thread because it goes thorugh a couple of options for gorceries.

Please someone show me how to link to this post.

The thing that I was most impressed with is how helpful the vallet people are. They can give you detailed instructions to the closest grocery store (Just Ask Them). They will haul all of the groceries up. They even have special bins. Just leave them a resonable tip. They were a God send.

When we drive (which we will in April), I pack my groceries (non-perishables) and take them along. I will even make a lasagna and put it in a cooler.

When we fly and rent a car, we usually fly in late at night, stay off-site and then get up early, drive to our resort, try to check in and then go to Publix........I always take a list with me to make the stop quick......

One thing we do is make home made spaghetti sauce and freeze it before we leave home. I also freeze a pound of butter. We drive down so this helps keep things cold in the cooler and when we get there we have a meal in the amount of time it takes to cook the spaghetti. I take down a rubber maid container filled with unopened peanut butter and jelly, quick mix pancake mix (just add water and shake), syrup, a box of spaghetti, etc. Another tradition thing I do is pre-measure all the dry ingredients needed in a ziploc bag to make Toll House Chocolate chip cookies. When I get there, I add the butter, eggs and vanilla. Bake half of the cookies one day and 3-4 days later bake the remainder dough. Fresh baked cookies the whole trip. We always make a trip to Publix while there to pick up milk, bread, cereal, etc. We eat all breakfast meals in the room, some lunches and because we have a 3 1/2 year old some dinners. We enjoy eating out and actually prefer it but sometimes to keep our sanity it's easier to eat in the room so we try to make things simple.

I second this advice. We always have valet/luggage services haul our groceries also and it is great. I gladly give them a tip, it is well worth it.

So if I stopped and bought soy milk before check in they have a fridge they wodul keep it in for me until our room was ready?

I saw some of this at the store recently. Is it good? What brand is it? I'd love to make pancakes in the morning. Thanks if anyone can help!:D

Upon arrving if your room is not ready, let them know that you have food that needs to be refrigerated. Make sure you make it clear that it needs to be refrigerated. It is my understanding that if you ask them to take it to your room when your room is ready and place the items in the refrig they will do so. Tip them accordingly for doing so.

Disney prices are not bad on some things (I don't mind paying an extra $.25 a dozen on eggs for the convienence) - horrible on others. Check the DVCMember website for grocery lists - that is pretty much what they carry in store. It isn't much - and I wouldn't feed two teenagers for a week from what you can get at the store, but for a meal or two, eggs and milk, it could work.

Depending on what your grocery list is and what your tolerance is for grocery prices, a combination of packing your boxed stuff and and buying your perishables from the on-site store may work - even for those flying. But if you are looking for either variety or
low prices - or if your shelf stable stuff is going to be two twenty four packs of pop, you are probably better off stopping at a grocery store.

If you are flying in and not renting a car, most towncar services will give you a half hour grocery stop. Half hour in an unfamiliar store with a long list isn't a lot of time, however.

This store will actually do the shopping for you and deliver it to your resort room!! I saw this in a post on the budget board (I think) and saved the web site. Goodings is an upscale grocery store right outside downtown disney. You have to purchase $50.00 minimum and there is a $10.00 charge for delivery. With water and soda, I can easily get to $50, so the min. seems fine with me.

http://www.goodings.com/

Instead of going to Goodings, turn left as you come out of Disney, and just a few lights down is a fairly new Winn Dixie. Total drive time is under 5-minutes from SSR. Goodings is really nice, but way overpriced.

I went on-line last year and got myself a Winn Dixie discount card and it saved me a ton of money. ::yes::

Gee, I went to that same W-D and I thought the prices were high even with the card (I got one, too). I seemed a bit dirty to me also (which I also found in my W-D when I lived in AL). I liked the Publix much better. It was over by the Premier Outlets. I thought it had much better prices than W-D.

So instead of turning left to W-D (where you go straight to Goodings), turn right. Go under I-4. Turn left at the next light. Follow the road around past the Outlet mall and Dolly Parton's place. Publix is on the left. Right near the new Hilton Grand Vacation Club that is being built.

jsjohnso,

That list is great! Thanks so much!!

For what it's worth, just fax in the order a day or two in advance, and pick it up on the way.....
