Groceries

We are flying into Orlando airport and staying at Fort Wilderness. I have done some research, and I think it makes the most sense for us to stop on the way to the Fort for groceries (we will have a rental car). Which is the most convenient place to get groceries when coming from the airport?

There are SO many of them, especially as you get very close to WDW. There are endless Target, Wal-Mart and Publix stores right on Rt 192. Just stop at any one of them right before you get in. There's a Publix right at Rt 192 and Rt 535 intersection, less than 5 minutes from WDW entrance.

We didn't like Publix - there were some staple items (for us) that they didn't carry, produce wasn't very fresh, and prices were HIGH. Some of this could just be the location we happened to go to, but we had much better luck at Walmart.

Which publix? Most I've been to are better then the Winn-dixie's down there (IMO) and I have a general rule to never buy produce in Walmart... maybe it was the one you were at?

I knew someone would ask that! DH was driving, so I wasn't paying much attention. Close-ish to the outlets (Vineland, I think) and in a strip center. It could definitely just have been that location. I too prefer not to shop at Walmart, but desperate times and all that. I will say the produce I got there was excellent - organic even. Leaps and bounds above the sad selection at Publix.

I'm sure there's variation store to store, but we've shopped at the Publix at 192 and 535 for years and never had an issue finding what we want...and we're picky. Wal-Mart, in our experience, is very, very hit or miss. There's one Wal-Mart down there, I'm sure I could find it if I checked maps, that is a DISASTER. It is insanely crowded, like MK crowded, all the time. It's dirty, and just a horrible place. But there are others, along with some Target stores, that are just wonderful. Very nicely kept, very low crowds, just like a small town store.

Yeah, we've considered it. The problem is we're very picky. It would probably take us longer to place the order than if we just get it ourselves. We usually make one or two large trips (depending on how long we stay) and then if we need to pick up other things, we just stop on our way back to the condo.

For our upcoming trip, we're driving down late on a Thursday. So dinner will be on the road anyway. I have to work on Friday...it's so nice of my company to let me work remote...so DW and the kids will go to the grocery store while I'm working.

Who do you use for delivery?

We used Garden Grocer who were very accommodating. We actually ordered additional items during our stay.

I don't know if you have Amazon Prime, but we did Amazon Prime Now when we arrived on our most recent trip. No delivery fee if you order over $20 of stuff, though you are expected to tip the delivery driver. We ordered bottled water, orange juice, milk, Capri suns, yogurt, etc. They don't really have produce or many meat options- but as you can see, we were more doing it for beverages. I placed the order while waiting for the Magical Express to take us to our resort, and it was delivered about 3 hours later. We'll definitely be doing this on future trips, too.
