OK, I realize this is a bit of a nutty question, but it's been driving me crazy! DH and DS6 went on GRR, so I wheeled DS2 over to the viewing area to snap some photos. I first ran over to the spot where you can see the riders getting loaded into their rafts. On the way through the tree-lined walkway there was a faint skunk smell, which at first I didn't think anything at all about because of the forest-type setting. Then it occurred to me that we're not in a forest, we're in an amusement park, and they surely did not import real skunks just for effect! (And if they did, what a bad idea that would be!) :lmao:

Anyway, so I then wandered over to another spot to view the big drop, and passing by the trees again, the skunk smell had faded. After DH and DS had gotten off the ride, there was still no line, so they went on again! As I passed through the tree-lined area to watch them load onto a raft, I again got a waft of very faint skunk smell!

What gives? Do they actually pump in the skunk smell for effect? I thought it was so funny, but I couldn't think of any other answer for it. And it's going to bug me until I know the answer! Does anybody know???

Skunks aren't uncommon all over CA. A real one probably got in. It could also be from some of the machinery on the ride. Diesel fumes sometimes smell like skunk. What I want to know is why Mr. Toad smells like caramel corn!

Hmm. I've smelled diesel before, and it usually reminds me of rotten eggs, not skunk. And I didn't think a skunk would be in such a busy environment so far from real woods. But maybe California has more civilized skunks? And who wouldn't want to live in an amusement park, after all! :lmao:

So maybe real skunks have moved into the Redwood Creek/Grizzly River area of the park... I'm sure it's possible. We didn't check out the Redwood Creek Trail, but it sounds like a good place to be with no skunk predators.

I'm a little disappointed, I was really hoping Disney had put some skunk 'smellovision' in, like on Soarin'!

I didn't notice a caramel corn smell on Mr. Toad; is there a popcorn vendor near that ride?

More like the smell-o-vision in It's Tough to be a Bug. We live in an urban area, far from any woods, and the skunks come to eat the neighbor's cat food.
As for Mr. Toad, it's when you get to the part that should smell like fire and brimstone. It has always smelled like caramel corn to me and the rest of my family. Maybe it's just a DL hallucination.

I actually have smelled smoke on the Toad ride before. My family walked by about 1/2 hr. later and it was closed... But Indiana Jones smells like spicy curry, when you get to the bug room. Ever smell that, or was it just me?...

yea, Skunk are very common... even my dog picked a fight with one :P

Yup skunks are common so it is possible. There are also plants that have that same smell... maybe its a new shrub or something near by that they planted. :confused3

All right, FINE. I can buy that it was a skunky plant, which might explain the mild odor that didn't linger...

Is there a pouty emoticon? (I really WANTED it to be smellovision...)

lol it still can be, I can be totally wrong there.. haha! It was just a wild guess

My guess is also it's machinery exhaust. However, if they pipe in pine smell, then it's possible your just getting a bad whiff of it.

If you were there between the 16th and the 22nd of November it could have been our group you smelt. We rode Grizzly at night and because we were all tired from walking all day and there was no line up the CM allowed us to go through the ride three times without getting out of our little boat. As the kids(4 of them) were getting off I noticed a funny stinky cheese smell coming from the kids, I believe it was their socks!
