Howdy! I'm new to these boards and wanted to introduce myself.
I'm Maddie. Like many of you, Disney parks are important to me. My mom passed away when I was 15 and she was in a wheelchair for the last several years of her life. Some of my fondest memories of her are from WDW trips because that's where she seemed happiest. Now that I'm an adult, I've made special memories at the parks with my daughter, sharing that same happiness I saw in my mom.
I'm from the US, but now I live in the UK, earning a Masters in Archeology for Museum and Artifact Studies. For my dissertation, I actually decided to write about the Splash Mountain re-theming to Tiana's Bayou Adventure because even though Disney Parks aren't museums, the attractions still offer cultural exhibitions and heritage. At first, I thought the dissertation would be about Disney's cultural representations of the South; however, as WDW and Disneyland transformed the attraction, I noticed the public seemed extremely passionate, both positively and negiative. While some people seemed really upset, some seemed excited. So, now the dissertation is more about emotion and memory, analyzing what the attraction means to people both as Splash Mountain and as Tiana's Bayou Adventure. Since the attraction is opening at WDW before my dissertation is due, I'm planning a trip in August to see it!
I don't think I'll be doing the Halloween Party this year, as I did it last year with my daughter, and she's not coming on this trip. I'm sad that Epcot's Food and Wine Festival starts later this year and we'll miss it, but I'm excited to see the Moana and Living Water and how they utilize Communicore Hall during non-festival times.
Anyway, it's lovely to be a member of these boards. I haven't been on a message board in ages!
