Great Wolf, Park Place, and no place in the Park

Long report coming! Last week, we (me, wife and 3 kids) took our middle of the AP Year DL trip. We always take a week-long vacation in November, but with APs we try to get in a few trips in between. We actually made a trip like this during the same week two years ago, and it was awesome as DL was a virtual ghost town (before the 60th brought the Crowd Chaos that never ended)....but I'm getting ahead of myself.

First, we spent two nights at the Great Wolf Lodge....and we loved it! We got a pretty good deal, so it made it worth it. The waterslides were really great. I loved them. The kids loved them. And even the giant Fort McKenzie (giant waterslide, water bucket area) was really cool for adults. At least, this adult. The rooms were a lot like Grand Cali (only way cheaper), and there were plenty of restaurants and food options INSIDE the hotel, so it was a self contained vacation resort. No car travel or outside walking needed - very relaxing. Honestly, this place may change the way we do Disneyland. I know I'm used to just walking from a hotel to the parks, but I might be tempted to start driving to the Disney parking lots if I could get a great deal for a week stay. That way we could escape the insane crowds of DL during the day, hit some waterslides, and then return.

After two nights there, we went to BW Park Place Inn and they were very gracious to let us park before check-in. I've heard you can't do that, but they let us anyway. As for the rooms, they were very spacious and had lots of mirrors, which the Great Wolf Lodge didn't have. The pull-out couch was a big bonus for our son. And the breakfast on the second floor of Captain Kidd's was....surprisingly good! As good as a Hampton, at least. My only beef at Park Place is this - the pillows. They're enormous! I sleep on my stomach, so I like a thin pillow. These were like giant sawed logs wrapped in paper towels. No give whatsoever...so that made sleeping a little difficult. But the proximity to the cross walk simply cannot be beat. Well worth the money, even if the rooms are just motel rooms that face outside.

And here comes the disappointment....Disneyland. We came during this week for Dapper Days two years ago. It was a ghost town, and as I recall only had Splash Mt down (our fave, but that was it I think). This year. MADNESS!!!!! First of all, Disneyland post-60th should NEVER EVER EVER open at 10am. It makes security awful. The first day, it took us 30 minutes to get through (we arrived at 9:50am), and the second day it took 20 minutes (we arrived at 9:30am). But on Friday when the park opened at 9am, it only took 5 minutes. So listen up Disney!!!!! Never open a park at 10am again. It's just penny-pinching that makes guests very upset before we even enter your gates.

Our routine at DL park is always this: go straight to Big Thunder, then Pirates, and then Splash Mt at least twice. We can usually do this with under 5 minute waits at each ride (when the park opens at 9am). So we walk in on Wednesday and Big Thunder is down for the first hour, Pirates is down for weeks (scheduled), and Splash is down until after Noon. Epic fail. Horrible start after 30 minutes in security. Add to it that all crowd calendars had this day as a ghost town or Level 2/10, but it was no 2. I've seen 2. This was a 5 or 6 day, so it was busy from beginning to the end. It was a tough day with closures and crowds, but at least in ended with my kids liking MSEP. I really didn't care for it, as it's old and outdated and not nearly "Disney" enough for my tastes, but if the kids were happy, I was happy. We also did the Red Rose Tavern that night....and they were all of out of desserts! That's what I went there for! No Grey Stuff for you! We had the Beast Burger, which was good, but the grilled onions and horseradish had me and my wife brushing our teeth 2 or 3 times to try to get the taste out of our mouths. But really? All out of desserts? C'mon Disney. And then when we wanted to get an AP popcorn bucket, they were all out of those too. My wife ran over to DCA to grab one of their AP buckets so we could take advantage of $1 popcorn refills. Ridiculous.

The next day was better as far as unscheduled breakdowns, except that Frozen Live cancelled after spending 40 minutes in line for it. That didn't sit well knowing that Grizzly River, Mickey's Fun Wheel, and Tower of Terror (our favorite DCA ride) was down and that there would be no World of Color finale. But we did get a lot of rides in, and the kids spent an hour in Redwood Creek Challenge. I like that place because I can sit in the shade and relax when it's crazy busy in the park (which is was). That day was definitely better than the first day, so I was doing better.

Then Friday came. Holy cow. I've been in the summer recently, but nothing prepared me for the crowds this day. First, we went back to our routine. Big Thunder...and it was open! Yay! Of course, Pirates wasn't open, so we went to Splash...which was closed. We waited in line at the rope for about 25 minutes and they finally opened it, but I feel like I had some prime time stolen from us. We usually would've done Splash 2 or 3 times in that first hour. But the late opening created a huge line that never went away that day. And then when we were on it....it broke down, lights came on, and we had to wait to be escorted off. We later went on Space MT and the same thing! We got in the car, took off and then...turned left?!?!? What? The car turned left and then stopped and we were escorted off and waited as they reset the whole ride. Major bummer. The rest of the day, like I said, was stupid busy. The live shows were fantastic (Magical Map, Fantasy Faire). We got in a lot of rides thanks to us being FP pros, but it was so crowded. In fact, when it was dinner time, I hadn't made any reservation because two years ago this week, we literally walked into Blue Bayou and got a seat. Big mistake this time around. Rancho was spilling out with people. We went to Plaza Inn....the line was wrapped around the entire restaurant. Went to Carnation Cafe...90 minute wait. Went to Jolly Holiday...line was out into Main Street and there wasn't a table available anywhere. So we went to Gibson Girl and had sundaes for dinner. Not ideal, but it was all that was available.

And then the worst. If you know me, I'm not particularly pleased with DL's fireworks record. It's only 3 days a week (in the offseason) and then they cancel it probably one quarter of the time. I was not surprised to hear them come over the speakers and warn that they could be cancelled due to high winds. The crowds kept groaning at each announcement, but you know what? They kicked it off anyway, and the crowd cheered! And then 7 minutes into it, right after the Indy scene....they stopped the show!!!! Noooooo!!! "Due to high winds...." And the crowd booed. Everyone was looking up and pointing at the smoke from the fireworks that had been launched and the cloud wasn't moving at all. The guy behind me dropped a coarse adjective before breathing "...ing Disneyland". My 5yo began to cry. People were booing and complaining out loud and in anger. It was ugly. And it capped off what was my worst trip to DL. We thought about going to City Hall and giving an official complaint, but what good would it do. We know the fire codes for fireworks. This happens. And it would just make some CM's night awful and accomplish nothing. We just went back to the room, sad that our trip that we so looked forward to didn't come close to expectations.

We ended up going to DCA the next morning to try and salvage the trip. It was pleasant. Got to do about 5 attractions before we left. But the damage was done. We had been thinking about coming back during the year a few more times before our November trip. But this trip burnt us bad. We were all saying how much we want to go to WDW where they have space for crowds and nighttime shows EVERY night that don't get cancelled. I'm sure it's busy and crowded there, too. But that Friday night, all we wanted to do is not ever come back. I'm sure I'm still feeling the height of the emotion, and I'll get over it soon enough. We'll be back.....after WOC and Fantasmic! return. But I'll never sit around at DL for fireworks again, and that's a shame.

With the stress of work and life, I need these trips to "feel the Magic"...and it wasn't even close. I'll leave with this quote from a guy I met from Hawaii while waiting for a show to start. "We went to Knott's Berry Farm on Tuesday - the place was empty and the rides were awesome. I came here (DL) and the place is jammed packed and the rides are all broken".

Thanks for the honest report. From your posts, I always think we are very alike. Especially your last paragraph. I NEED these little trips and I need them to be reasonably successful. If I don't get my fix every couple of months, I find my ability to deal with life goes down hill fast. I am extremely frustrated with the inability to physically move in the parks lately (particularly DL). And the ride breakdowns seem to be out of control the past few trips and just an expected part of the experience. How did that happen? We still manage to have fun but we NEVER go without at least one table service reservation. Do you know I have been 12 times according to the APP (who knows how many other times before the APP) and I have only seen fireworks one time?! REALLY looking forward to Great Wolf next week and I will just hope for a bit of Disney magic here and there. And at least for us, it is still a way better trip than WDW.

See, that's sad. You've never seen the fireworks. My sister's been on two 4 day trips in the last 4 years and she hasn't seen them either thanks to cancellations and no displays on weekdays. Maybe if they offered them every night, the cancellations wouldn't be so bad. But since they display them less than half the time, a cancellation becomes a really bad thing.

As for Great Wolf, get your legs ready. Lots of stairs! To get to the top really cool slides, it's 80 steps. The mat racers and tube slides are 64 steps (I think). On a quiet day like we had, there's no lines. So we were going all the way to the top in one leg each slide. There was no climbing half way, waiting and taking one step at a time for the last 20 steps. My quads are iron!!! You might throw in some squats or lunges today.

The animatronic show is good for little kids maybe 7 and below. My older kids weren't too keen on it. Not up to Disney standards, I guess. The Wood Fire Grill was good for gluten free for my wife. She had an amazing brisket sandwich. The donuts and Dunkin' seemed a day old ... except for the donut holes. The pizza place on the lower level was decent. Could've been way overpriced, but the price good for a contained resort. And lots of arcades! A gorgeous resort - you'll love how it feels like Grand Cali in the lobby.

Man, this reminds me to manage my expectations for our trip in October. It will be two years since our last visit, where the worst thing about it was the heat! I am hopeful that with our weeklong stay and plan to have 6 days in the park, we can ride the wave and face the challenges w/out stress.

Our shortest trip was 3 days long during Christmas, I guess that was three years now. I expected the worst, and was pleasantly surprised despite the crowds. However, we had two unpleasant moments as the result of other "guests," as well as the certainty that we would not deal w/ hotel shuttles again.

I hope things mellow out somehow. With the ever increasing prices, and constant crowds, at some point, something will have to give. DL is my family's favorite spot, and it will really be a crushing blow to have the magic dissipate. Do you know how hard it is to find something my husband likes??!

Thanks too for your honest reporting. I check TouringPlans (yes I know they aren't always accurate, but it gives me something to compare to) and on the Friday, their predicted crowd level was 4 out of 10 and the actual was 9/10 out of 10. It gives me some perspective for our trip at the end of March.

Really?!?! That gives some solid numbers to the crowd disaster in the middle of no-time-winter. I wonder what Wed and Thurs actually were?

I honestly believe that Touring Plans now does far more damage to the off season than any event. People see the low numbers, and then they book those dates and turn them into the crowded times. I guess I can thump my chest and say I took the worst DL could throw at me, but that doesn't make me feel better about it. It's still the worst feeling I've ever had in a Disney park and has me looking anywhere else for future vacations once our APs expire.

I really don't think those crowd predictor things are accurate. All I ever see is people complaining that they were way off.

I'm sorry your trip was less than magical. Our worst trip (which was still pretty darn good, luckily) was during Holiday time and I will probably never visit during that time again because it was so crazy crowded.

I'm sorry, that's a lot of disappointment. Not cool having so many rides down at once and I hate the crowds too. I miss the parks when they had days that were less crowded. I have pics of DD when she was 2, 10 years ago, on Main Street with Pluto and nobody else around. He interacted with her for atleast 10 minutes. DD sat down and he imitated her, they ran around together. Still nobody else around. Crazy! It's a treasured memory but little did I know at the time that it would never be like that again :(

I'm sorry you had such a rotten time. I'm glad you realize it is Anaheim Fire Marshal and not Disney who makes the call to cancel or stop the fireworks. Disney would prefer to have them go off nightly, but between the limited number of nights they are allowed to set them off each year, the limitation on M-Th, the fact that they get loaded and if they stop them mid show, they have to pay extra to unload, so many little things, they aren't happy with not showing them either. We were fortunate enough to get to go thru the experience of hanging with the Fire Marshal once. Learned so much about the requirements. It really was eye opening.

It is also very sad that people can't understand it isn't acceptable to use that kind of language.

I know there are a lot of rides down, it is that time of year. Goes to show that there really isn't an "off season" any more. But Disney still needs to do refurbs.

We will be going back in a couple weeks. Interesting to see how it will go.

I'm sorry that you seem to always have a miserable time at Disneyland, each thread I've read about your trips or how you feel about things you sound so angry and dissatisfied with the park, so why are you wasting your time and money going? There are plenty of other things you can do in California instead of coming to DL who is clearly not up to your standards. You can save so much money on not getting those AP passes. Go to WDW, maybe it will fit your needs more.

Time and time again it has been stated on this forum that the crowd calendars are a bunch of hoo-ey for Disneyland, they aren't accurate and they give people a sense of false hope that they are going to have a crowdless visit. This is not how Disneyland is now, and people need to go in with that expectation instead of thinking "Oh well, it says it won't be busy according to the crowd calendar so we are going to have a ghost town of a trip!" It won't happen and it has not been that way since the 60th. It's time to just go in expecting there to be crowds and you won't set yourself up for such dramatic disappointment.

It was a mistake on your part to not even make reservations for Blue Bayou, even when it isn't crowded I make reservations.

Disney has to follow what Anaheim FD tells them, does it suck that fireworks were canceled? Yes. Is it worth getting all upset about? No. I don't see why people get upset when they are canceling the fireworks because it can be a safety issue, but I guess that doesn't matter because we all paid to be here therefore, to heck with safety! I think that's poor thinking on peoples parts. It's just a firework show it's not the end of the world.

Disney can't help when a ride breaks down when a lot of it is due to rider error because people don't get out of their vehicles in time, and things need to be refurbished do you know how many times Disney would have to cancel a refurbishment if so and so's family was coming in for a visit and they had to make sure that all the rides were up and working? That just isn't going to happen.

We are going in April and I have really worried about the spring break crowds. Your experience just makes me all the more nervous. It really makes me think about making sure my kids are going to be prepped for the longer lines and lots of people. We don't have any adr's at all because we normally do counter service. I keep wondering if we need to pack in something a bit more substantial than just snacks to avoid some of the lines.

Did you think it was worth getting the ap popcorn bucket? I'm hoping they still have them when we go. My whole family loves Disneyland popcorn but as of the last price increase they've about hit my limit of what I am willing to pay for it. Our last trip I didn't buy it once.

I totally agree when you said they shouldn't open at 10:00. Those earlier hours are just so valuable in terms of experiencing the park in a half way decent way.

I wonder if or how long it will be before Disney actually has trouble staffing the parks. I wouldn't want to work there . . . it's so crowded all the time now that it must be a very stressful job. Can you imagine being a cast member directing traffic for parades ect?

The current AP popcorn offer runs through 4/15 or 16. Disney has already said when they run out of the buckets they won't get more for this round. There were several warnings on Twitter that the DL bucket was going to sell out, and they suggested people get them in DCA. I doubt it will last through the offer period. The same thing happened when they did it over the summer. If you know someone else going before them, I'd try to split a bucket. They scan APs when you refill, but there's nothing on the bucket to indicate who bought it.

At the risk of sounding cliché, the details help Disney fans beat the crowds, referencing enjoyment... at least for those who can go regularly. Disneyland is so much more than just rides. There are smaller and equally pleasant attractions. While it may not be everybody's espresso, the Enchanted Tiki Room often has a small line. There is often plenty of sitting room towards It's a Small World, where you can sit and watch for the occasional character. You can tour Main St. and look at the windows. You can try and spot the cats and, in the process, you'll find small hidden gems and the occasional hidden Mickey. Granted, none of this can be viewed as "worth the money", but if relaxation is the main goal, what can be more relaxing than slowing it down and taking in the environment?

I know what you mean about the crowds. Part of the joy of having an AP used to be "off season" weekends, which were a bit crowded, but manageable. Now, it's summer crowded at least every day (lately it's looked more like November/December crowded if it's not raining). My family still enjoys our time, but more and more it's looking like we might skip a year once our APs expire and wait for SWL to open before handling the crowds again. I expect them at this point, but we just need a little break from the sea of people I think.

Yep, we were there last week too, Tues thru Friday and it was a bit more crowded than I expected. I was expecting crowds but they were larger than I thought they'd be. It felt almost as crowded as the summer (we were there in August on a weekend). Thursday felt the worst to me but I think that's just because we were in Adventure/Froniter Land/NOS in the afternoon. That was a bad idea, lol. At one point (don't remember which day) Winnie The Pooh was 30 minutes!!!

We arrived Tuesday morning, checked into PPH and headed to MM. The app showed long lines for everything in FL so we went to Asto Orbiters because it showed a 5 minute wait. It was about 9:45 so we still had 15 of MM left and the line for AO was LONG. We waited 25 minutes. I know that is a short wait at 2pm but with 15 minutes before the park even opens, that's a long wait. Especially, when the app said 5 minutes! We definetley managed tho. We didn't wait for anything for more than 30 minutes but that's because that's our limit and we'll just find something else to do at that point.

I felt the ride lines were very manageable with a little strategy and using FP but it was the long lines for snacks (we did TS for meals) and the lines in the stores that got to me. Of course, a lot of the times we did have long lines for these things is because of the time we chose to shop. If we're going to shop at World of Disney after DCA closes and right before Disneyland closes I guess we can expect the place to be packed, lol.

I think with so many rides closed for construction and refurbishment and so much of the entertainment dark it was just not the type of trip we are used to. Our AP's are up soon and we won't be renewing. We'll be back, of course, but not for a while, and not when so much is closed.

Thanks for the genuine sympathy. I guess it's why we vent, right? I like people like you!

As for going when SWL opens, I can't imagine how crazy DL will be at that point. It's insane now. They don't need a new Land. They need a third park. There just isn't room down Main Street for chaos SWL will bring. Don't get me wrong. I want to see it as much as anyone. But after what I experienced Friday (and even Fresh Baked Disney videos couldn't believe how busy it was), I just don't know how DL can accommodate that many people all the time.

This was my problem on Friday. There was no way to enjoy even sitting back and relaxing and taking it in. With the park at 9 of 10 crowd level, Tomorrowland, Main Street, and Adventureland were virtual parking lots. You couldn't move. You know that feeling of trying to get out after fireworks? It was like that for the last 4 hours. Hard to take it all in when it's that busy. In the past, I'll head to Tom Sawyer's Island or hit the Railroad when it's that busy. Then I can take it in. But with those down, along with a bunch of other rides, there was no way to get that Disney vibe at DL. At DCA, it was much easier with Redwood Challenge there. Just couldn't do it at DL. Those are good tips, though. Thanks. Wish there was a way I could've made them reality.

That's rough. But, as you know, right now it's going to be extra crowded due to ride/attraction closures. There's always a place in the park where the crowds aren't going. Even if it's by the fast pass area of Haunted or what used to be the ranch area (even though there is construction). It's a shame the crowds were that bad but at least DCA was better for you! How was the Redwood Challenge?
