Saw a blip on CNN today from Clark Howard. IF you have a smartphone, you can save money by dropping the texting part on your cell plan. There are tons of apps that will let you text for free and you don't need to pay the phone companies to do it.

I realized this was true since my youngest texts free from home on our wireless internet on her ITouch with an app called TextFree.

Hope it helps someone save a few dollars.

My DD uses TextFree (or did until she lost her iPod last week :headache:) and she had another "phone number" assigned to her for texting. So, you all your friends need to text to a different number.

I've been using google voice since I got my smartphone last year. DW still insists on her friends being able to text her phone #. For $5 a month, I'm not going to argue. (You know, you have to pick and choose your battles.) :)

We have an everything plan, so we can't drop texting. With the discount I get from work, it doesn't cost that much anyway.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to check this out. Would love to save $15/month on texting; I only text a few people, but I'm addicted to it!

I couldn't possibly drop unlimited texting now. $10 per phone not including 15% employer discount) is a small price to pay for knowing I will never, ever, ever again be charged something in the range of the national debt because of the fast and furious fingers of my progeny.

And some of us are so cheap we don't even have a data plan or a smart phone! :rotfl2:

I do have texting on my iPod touch if I am in wifi range.

Loved your post!!! I myself pay $30 for our three Iphones to have unlimited texting through AT&T, in addition to that, because of the unlimited texting, we have unlimited mobile to any mobile, so I rarely use any of my minutes, and NEVER use my house phone anymore. If I didn't need my landline for my alarm, I would cancel it immediately.
