Great Movie Ride Closing August 13

The timing for this just sucks with all the other construction work going it, it's not an idea day out.

I will go to DHS on my January trip but that's only because the tickets I got in the UK automatically have hoppers included.

Definitely wouldn't pay on the gate for this park the way it is now, which is sad as it one of my favorites. (well that's until Toy Story Land and Galaxy's Edge is open - then you won't keep me away).

But I do love the concept of the replacement ride as I think there needs to be a strong Mickey presence especially in the Studios as "I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse" lol

Two quick question:

Firstly do they have any idea when the new ride will be opening?

Secondly, as I'm loosing track, what's it going into the old space where American Idol used to be?

Sorry to hear about movie ride closing. Our next trip is October and sad we won't get a last ride. It was always easy ride for someone in wheel chair and there families.

My biggest concern is are the lines going to be ridiculous for the ride now that its closing? I will be there on Aug 11th and have to take the son for his last time.

1. No time frame but in the panel they did say it should be open for the 50th anniversary
2. The Hyperion Theater has been the home to the Frozen Sing Along for a couple of years now

I'm sad about the GMR closing. I know it had been rumored for a while, then it was a strong rumor. But I thought our early September trip was just going to squeak in our ability for a last ride. :sad2: Bummed!:sad::sad:

Same here. That's why we did a FP for it actually, because I thought for sure it would still be open for our trip in August and that if the rumored change to a Mickey ride was true it wouldn't be closed so soon. The timing is a shock to me.

Well that's just goes to show how observant I am, I was only there in November when this show was going on. Doh :rotfl:

I know they've got a lot of construction going on but 4 years for one ride that's a bit steep - Fingers crossed they get it open earlier

Very bad timing for me. I will be there middle part of September. I really do not mind Ellen's Universe of Energy closing but GMR was my favorite part of HS. I'll still enjoy myself but not as much.

Quite honestly I am devastated. The Great Movie ride and the Chinese Theater facade is so iconic. The ride represents what MGM/Hollywood Studios is about; celebrating movies. Sure it needed updating. They should have added some new movies scenes and new new technology. It was a perfect relaxing and enjoyable dark ride. I wish Disney would reconsider this decision. From what I have seen and heard of the new ride, I am not thrilled. Does anyone remember having a lump in their throat entering the park early in the morning at opening, walking towards the Chinese Theater and as you approached you heard classic movie themes such as Tara's Theme from Gone With the Wind and Lawrence of Arabia coming from the park speakers. I cherish those memories.
Yeah, I really liked The Great Movie ride the most of anything at HS. We'll miss it

I think this will have to be a wait and see. People already have their FP booked for that time frame (even the offsite), and not many are going to give up their RNRC or TSM for it. Maybe more people will select it as a 4th FP instead of Star Tours?

I think the biggest issue is how many locals will come that week for a last ride... making the whole park more crowded that week.

TGMR is a classic and a family favorite. We are all very sad to see it go away, but are so glad we all got to ride it last year one last time. :(

Do you think there is any possibility they will delay the closure by a couple weeks?

DHS for at least a year having only with 4 "rides" and 7 shows and a ton of meet and greets barely qualifies as a park now. I am surprised they are closing this before Toy Story Land is open.

The lines for those 4 rides will be awfully long. No amount of extra shows and meet and greets will help disperse the crowds that want to ride those rides (some of the best rides in all the parks).

With only 4 attractions with queues (thus the only 4 attractions truly needing a Fast Pass) and its smaller footprint, this park will sure feel crowded for the next 12 months .. and who knows what else they will need to close before Toy Story Land opens up (My guess would be that TSMM would see some sort of closure (or at least some of the tracks closing) while they work on the new entrance.

Personally I feel for the next year, they should just sell a dual Epcot/DHS ticket (basically a free hopper only between those two parks) to spread out the crowds. Maybe give you the ability to spread your fast passes between the two parks as well. It would really help the Tiering issues and lack of high demand attractions that both those parks suffer from right now.

I go to Disneyland and Disney World fairly often. When I am at Disneyland, I'm always impressed with how many attractions they cram into a small space. Everyone always talks about how Disney world was blessed with all this land, but they don't really utilize it. When Star Wars opens in 2019, it's going to have massive crowds on both coasts. If the lines are too long or you simply are not interested, you've got a bazillion options when you're at Disneyland. Not so much at DHS. DHS should be trying to get as many attractions in that park as they can. TGMR needed a refresh but the park still needs rides, even after Star Wars and Toy Story opens. I think the Mickey ride sounds great but it's a lateral move with attraction count in the park.
Right. At DL they often didn't replace old attractions when adding new ones, but that seems to be just about all they do at WDW

It's not going to take four years to build this ride, but when you factor in every construction project that will be going on simultaneously, there are only so many construction workers in Florida.
