My son is going to his prom and Men's Warehouse has a tuxedo special for $49.95 which includes tux, shirt, bowtie/cumberbund, cufflinks. Shoes are $20 extra. He was asked to go to another prom just one week later...so I was at the store and asked if they could cut me a special price on a second tuxedo.

It turns out he can keep his tux & shoes an extra week and only pay $30 extra. I can bring the tuxedo and shirt back, and they will press it in the store so it looks fresh again for the next prom! The dress shirt can be washed in the washing machine. He can pick another bowtie color for only $2.50. The cost of a tux rental for two proms is going to be $111.00 (I could have sworn I paid that much for ONE tuxedo for my older son when he went to his prom).

NEXT YEAR, he is signing up a prom rep so he can get a FREE tuxedo! Kids in high school hand out cards and when you bring it to the Men's Warehouse, that kid gets credit. I think you need either 5 or 10 cards to get a free tuxedo. We helped one kid by turning in his card - and my son gets entered in a contest to win a car:) (I won't hold my breath).

I was plesantly suprised as I thought I would have to pay for two tux rentals.
Thank you Men's Warehouse:cheer2:

Whoa, I didn't even realize that's what tux's cost to rent! That's something I'll have to look fwd to in the future w/ two boys.

The card deal is excellent though, and that's cool you got to help someone else out.

That's awesome! Thanks for the info. It cost $129 for my son's tux rental last year for his junior prom. This year I will have tux rentals for both junior and senior proms. My husband and I have crunched numbers and we have estimated our cost will be right at $600 for the prom season. We always thought the boys had it easy :rotfl2: I had to break it to my husband that we had not only tux rental but flowers for the ladies, prom tickets, dinner and limo rentals. I did not pay for a limo for my son's prom last year but since this is his senior year I feel as if we should. Now my junior, his school has strongly encouraged that limos be utilized due to the venue. Great.....:rotfl:

What a great deal! this is something I have to remember for my son in the coming years (he's only a freshman!)

All the they to do is hand out the cards? Back back when.. the boys actually wore tuxedos to school for the day and also handed out cards. You had to wear the tuxedo to get the credit.

Several times a year out local Kidney Foundation thrift store,(Community Thrift in this areaa...), gets donations of "used" Tux. I have picked them up for as little as 99 cents! in great cond. I found a new, never worn one for $39.99 a few months ago, and it was a designer one also, made of summer wool/silk blend, very nice. I get them to use as costumes for the theater program at the local HS and MS, and for my DS as he is a Theater major in college...
if you wonder how I could tell some had never been worn this is what I check-
the hem on the pants are not finished, and there is not a press line on the pants leg.(yea, you can usuall use white vinegar to remove a hem line, but it is iffy in Polyester fiber..), the sleeves also show no sign of shortening/lengthing. Also the pockets are still sewn shut, that is not always a sign, but it usually means that if it was rented it was not rented out a lot...
And finally, if the Tux still has any tags in it, like the orginal price to buy. I am talking about the orginal makers tags, not store tags... the orginal tags will have the makers/designers name on them, and sometimes also has a store tag, like Mens Wearhouse, or JC1cents...
Good luck!

We went to K & G and purchased a tuxedo for our DS15 when we were going on a cruise. I figure that he will get plenty of use out of it for dances and proms in addition to cruises. We paid $99 for the tuxedo and pants. The shirt was $14.99 and the cummerbund and tie was about $12.99. They had studs for only $9.99.

I thought it was a great deal and he can use it again and again.

An adult friend purchases his tuxedos from www.cheaptux.com We might do the same for ds (hs junior). He has two proms to attend on successive Friday nights next month. Rental prices are high ($49 for the super special). If he can wear the tux this year and next year, we'll be ahead. I'll be doing any alterations myself.

My son went to Goodwill a few weekends ago & bought himself 3 suits, a tux, cummerbund, 3 ties, and a few other little things all for less than $65. He was so proud of himself! ( Have to admit I was too) If I told him that all we could afford was Goodwill, he would probably have a fit, but for some reason, it's the cool thing to do for high school boys in our community to shop for suits that they actually LIKE to wear to school at Goodwill. Since he is a musician & will be majoring in music, he'll need his own tux for performances. He had to have 2 pairs of the pants hemmed at a cost of about $20 -still a great deal!

I got DS a tux today at Penny's. they had a nice sale and I had an extra 20% coupon. I think it is pretty nice and the whole thing, shoes, socks, shirt, cuff links, cummerbund, tie, vest, jacket and pants was $169 tax included. I am very happy with it and he was too. with a little luck he will get to wear it this year and next before he outgrows it!

When we were going on our first cruise, I bought DH a tux at JCPenney's for $69.99! It was a nice Pierre Cardin 3 button tux with vest. So you (not the OP, but other people with boys approaching prom age) might want to look into just purchasing a tux.

This isn't the tux we have, but its similar to what I mean.

Thank you, thank you for this lead! DS is going to the prom this year and also needs a tux for the symphonic band. We went to JC Penney last night, and bought a Stafford jacket and pants, as well as a boxed set of shirt, tie, cummerbund and studs all at 50% off. It was less than $130 for the whole thing. The Men's Wearhouse in the mall doesn't sell used (which was our original intent), and the price for a jacket and pants alone was $160. The tux rental at the MW started at $96.

DS is pretty much done growing (we hope!), so I hope it's something he'll have for years to come. Thanks again -- I would never have thought JC Penney.
