Gratuity Question

Hi, mine and my sister's families are traveling to Disneyland next month. We're Australians so don't have a clue about this whole tipping thing. I've noticed that the menus all seem to say that an 18% gratuity gets automatically added to the bill for parties of 8 or more (we'll be 4 adults and 4 kids). Is this a fee for the extra large group and then you pay the normal tip on top of that or is it just to make sure the servers get an appropriate tip???

Sorry for the probably silly question but we don't want to offend anyone or under tip etc. Thanks very much for your help!

Autogratuities for large parties is common so the waiter/waitress doesn't get stiffed(under tipped or not at all tipped) when it takes extra effort to serve a large group.

No, you don't have to tip anything more on top of this. But if something special happens that merits your server deserving more feel free to tip extra.

Just a note, make sure they actually do add the gratuity. A few times we have been with extended family and even though the menu says there is an automatic gratuity, it doesn't always get added (I have wondered if they don't count young kids). So, just make sure so you don't leave the server without a tip.
