Now it's just 5 more days for all of us!!! There is a nice public beach on the north end of Seven Mile Beach which is very nice also. It has bathrooms and showers too, if that is important to you (like it is to me!) We are renting a car and driving ourselves (we've been to GC 2 different times for a week-long vacation, so we know the lay of the land). Riding with DH while driving on the left side of the road is an experience unto itself!

Thanks - not to sound too incredibly cheap - but could you tell me the approximate cost of renting a car there? Also have you been to Rum Point alot nicer than Seven Mile Beach or are they about the same? I am so sorry to ask so many questions!!

I'll have to check with my travel agent (I mean, husband) regarding the car rental. I know we are using Andy's Car Rental, and I believe it is less than $40/day. We are only doing this because DH wants to see what kind of damage was done to the island due to Hurricane Ivan last year. Otherwise, I'd head straight for the beach; we've done most of the tourist things before on our vacations there.
I have been to Rum Point, and it is beautiful (or it was before Hurricane Ivan hit; not sure about now). It usually has extremely calm water, because it is a little more protected than 7 Mile Beach. But 7 Mile Beach is usually pretty calm too. Rum Point is a little harder to get to though, unless there is a Disney excursion for it. I would think you would need to take a taxi to the place where you catch a ferry, and then take the ferry to Rum Point. You can get there by car, but I think it takes a while due to where it is located. I've never done the drive from the cruise port to Rum Point, we usually stay on the East End of the island. Rum Point does have facilities, and there are also restaurants there.
how is the snorkeling at 7 Mile Beach, or any of the other easily accessable beaches. We own our own equipment, so we would bring it on the beach if we would be able to use it.
Get in a cab and ask for Sea Grape beach. $4 per person each way and all the facilities you need. Chairs, umbrellas, food, drink, water sports rentals, etc. We had a great day there.
I don't recall what we paid for our rental car (we were there for a week in 1/04) but it was very reasonable through Andy's (they have a website where you can make reservations). We stayed at the Marriott resort on 7 Mile Beach and it took a while to drive to Rum Point. Otherwise there is a ferry from the Hyatt. From the cruise port it may take a while and you would be better off maximizing your beach time on 7 Mile Beach. Some areas were very good for snorkeling but alas I cannot recall which ones they were. The best snorkeling was when we did the 1/2 day cruise to Stingray City--made 2 snorkel stops before hanging with the stingrays. And I would say that if this is your first trip to Grand Cayman, Stingray City is an amazing experience that I would definitely not miss.

Wog, do you recall where Sea Grape is? I know I've heard of it, but don't know where it is. We might want to go there instead of to the public beach. Is it on 7 Mile Beach?
I don't want a beach too close to Georgetown, because they tend to be very rocky. I like smooth water and soft sand!

I have gone scuba diving off Seven Mile Beach years ago and it was awesome. It's really shallow but once you got out far enough, there was always lots to see! We even ventured out from the beach at night. We never even used our lights because the moon was so bright. That was close to 20 years ago, here's hoping it's still the same way now. I'd love to hear what it's like now. ENJOY!
