Graduation party after 2 years - 2 more years to go?

I think an achievement is an achievement. I know that for a lot of people, an Associates degree is a small thing but I disagree. If a college is marking that step, why would anyone diminish the accomplishment by saying they are to common for recognition?

I am finally pursuing my own Associates, and I am 56, so perhaps I have a different perspective.

OP- if your son has plans to pursue a four year degree, I would save the big party for that, but I would not let this milestone pass without a celebration. I think a small party to make this point in your sons life would be a nice idea.

I got my Associates in December and am now working towards my bachelors...I kind of wish we'd had a small family get-together, but eh. Either way.

Getting an Associate's is an accomplishment; lots and lots of people don't make it to that point.

Besides, life's short; why not take any available opportunity to get together with family and friends?

I'm not sure I would make it a huge blast, knowing that he planned to continue on for his Bachelor's and possibly Master's. But I see nothing wrong with a party if that's what you want. If you're concerned that it will look like a gift grab, you can certainly request no gifts, or a contribution to an educational institution-- or any other charity-- in leiu of gifts.

We didn't have a party for mine; we knew I was going for a Bachelor's and then a Master's. (You need a Master's to get teaching certification in NY.) We did go out for a family dinner though.

I'm all for a good party or celebration but I'm not sure about this. If you did something, I would do it private with your family. I can't say that I've ever received a 2 year college passed party. Does he want one?

High school graduation parties are very common in my area but that is the only party people have for graduations. Go out to dinner with the family.

Maybe it is just were I am from, but I have never been to/heard of a college graduation party. Most people just go to dinner after the ceremony.

I'm right there with you although there was a lot of celebration on campus for families and graduates during graduation weekend at my college. I didn't have a seperate party at home and didnt even think to expect one.

OP, this is an accomplishment for your son. I personally would have a quiet celebration with immediate family and maybe grandparents but leave it at that. Any other type of celebration might just be seen as a gift grab.
