Government of Canada announces one-year ban for pleasure craft and cruise vessels

Oh no, trust me the blame is put 100% on Justin.

But yes, the very slow vaccine roll out must definitely have an impact on this decision.
It is sad to see after what many would consider a quick and full response to the pandemic until now. I hope it gets better quickly. I am kind of surprised to see the US starting to get its vaccine game together after a bit of a bad start.
Pfizer, Moderna and the EU can shoulder some of that blame along with our prime minister. Yes we should have been producing our own vaccines (which is only NOW just starting to get those wheels in motion) but the delays in production and delivery are to be blamed on Pfizer and Moderna. The federal govt didn't know they were going delay our deliveries. Everyone who wants to be vaccinated can be done by September seems like a pipe dream now.

If we are going to blame prime ministers we can start with the one who shut down domestic vaccine production decades ago and every one since then who did not reinstate it. The middle of a pandemic was not the time to figure out that not having domestic production made us vulnerable.

I really need them to extend this. We are so limited in the time that we can cruise, I need to be able to move our trip to summer 2022.

I wouldn’t worry. Right now May 2022 is the latest anyone can book a cruise so there’s not much reason for Disney to extend until they’ve released the next round of sail dates

Very true!! Not as if this is a new problem here.....sigh. Here's hoping going forward....well you know what, let's just get through this Pandemic first. 😳

I do wonder if politicians are using COVID as a reason to end cruising for climate change reasons.
I think it’s more that the middle class is once again being told there’s no singing at the North Pole. All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.

So sad...i moved my 2020 to 2021, and now i have to cancel again!!!
We've had to cancel/move our river cruise, originally booked for Apr 2020, to 2021, and now it's 2022.

Also moved our 2020 RV trip to the eastern Canadian maritime provinces to this summer. I'm thinking it's going to be moved to 2022.

I'd really like to be traveling again, but I totally get it - there's a disease out there killing people, and we barely have a handle on controlling it. It's going to take some time to get there.

It's never happened yet. It's been tried before. And Biden has already stated that he's not going to waiver the Jones Act.

Viking tried...Didn't happen.

They eventually found a way to get their Mississippi River boats built and an ownership structure that met the Jones Act requirements.

I am waiting to see how the CDC handles it. I definitely think that the Cruise industry as a whole has gotten a unnecessary black eye during the pandemic. Some issues were there own doing, but many cruisers and crew were stranded on ships due to different countries not allowing them to debark which increased infections on the ships at the time. Also, if they do a longer restriction on cruising in the US I think that we may start seeing some of the larger lines start to shutdown some of their extra lines and sail with just their core line. No idea what DCL would do, probably depends on how Disney is doing overall.

No matter how we look at this, there really is no way to be fully prepared for a pandemic, but I sure hope that we learn some lessons from this one. I also am stunned by some like everyone's favorite cruise lawyer that blame the ships for not having the right filters etc. What I would love to know is if their office buildings had the proper ventilation systems built in prior to this;)? I am guessing that even after this many of our workplaces won't have enhanced ventilation systems.

Why would then given that it helps protect myriad riverboat cruise ships from being driven out of business by foreign ships with foreign crews?

And the reality is there have been countless opportunities for a conservative-led House/Senate combo to repeal over the last 140 years. But among the issues in the PVSA is that US flagged vessels have greater labor protections, and it would be an odd pivot for the American party that is closely tied or labor to repeal the PVSA. Where exceptions have been granted they have been to routes without US lines in service, and most exceptions have been granted to Canadian flag lines on those routes. US to Puerto Rico is the only exception given to the convenience flag vessels.

And it would be unlikely to survive a veto, which would be in line with pandemic policy goals currently expressed by the current executive.

The Canadian government and some of the provinces are providing financial relief for many businesses. Not sure about seasonal tourism but possibly.
It’s not as good as one might thing. For example, I was told the relief applies to businesses closed in the last lockdown not ones closed since the last spring. Also, any government help will have to be repaid of course and so many choose not to apply. My husband runs a business and has a few close business friends who tried to take advantage of this relief and it’s not easy. I don’t know all the rules and issues with it, but bottom line a lot of business owners are on their own and unfortunately soon out of luck.
