Got Costumes, but ....

We finally got our costumes yesterday and we had a couple problems with them:( :( :

1. The biggest problem of all - they SMELL  . The person making them must be a smoker, because these reek of rancid smoke. They are terrible. Even after one washing, you could still smell it.

2. I didn't get one of my skirts. Was supposed to have a red overskirt, black underskirt and long chemise. Got the long chemise and the red overskirt, but no black underskirt. Plus they were supposed to be pulled up on one side to be able to see all three layers. Not done.

3. DH's vest is more like a dress. He is very short, but long waisted and very short (to no) legs. The lady said the vest was to come mid-thigh. His comes to his knees.

So now I have to try and shorten the vest. Thankfully I can sew, otherwise we would be looking for someone to do it in two days. We leave on Tuesday.

We contacted the lady about my other skirt and she is mailing it. So it should be here in time.

All in all, my costume & DD's look great on, but I'm going to have to do some work on DH's. Also will have to figure out how to pull up one side of my red skirt.

Wish me luck.

To get the smoke out, we have found that Fabreeze for laundry works wonders! I have only found it a few places around here, but it's amazing stuff. We had some lanyards that were donated to Bert's Big Adventure last year that were totally icky smoke smelly gross. We had washed them in detergent and used fabric softener, but they still were gross. But, we found the Fabreeze and it took out the icky stuff! It is safer than trying to use bleach too. We also have found that it works wonders on the dogs' bedding. I hope this helps. Maggie

Maggie,
We ran DD's & my vest in Dryel and then Febreze'd them and that worked. Had to wash DH's vest & pants twice. Ran our skirts & chemises & DH's shirt once, but with fabric softner (used for second wash on DH's stuff). This made a really big difference. Also helped somewhat on DH's vest. Don't have to shorten it quite as much.

(PS one of my nickname's is Maggie) ;)

Thanks for the suggestion.:)

I was going to suggest febreeze too!! That stuff works great and they might even have one for just smoke smells. They have a few different ones now. I hope it all works out with your costumes. Have a great time!! :wave2:

Just finished with DH's vest. Had to take about 4 inches off of it. But it looks fine. Forgot to mention the sash that came with it - this was also too wide. Cut that almost in half (one piece when finished was half the original). Finished both pieces so that DH could choose which one he preferred. Also had to cut down his head scarf. Just cut that in half & finished both pieces, so if I want to wear one too, I can.

The Febreze worked great on the vests for DD & I. Now just waiting on my other skirt. Hopefully I will be able to wash it before we go.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was a little down after seeing what I had to do and just smelling them .... Yuck!!!!:earseek:

I am so glad that the costume problem is almost completely resolved. I'll send some pixie dust your way in hopes that everything will turn out ok. Have a great trip! Maggie
