Just watched the F Word....I cannot believe the way those Turkeys were slaughterd and plucked!!

I eat meat & fish ....but I have watched the F Word from the beginning so watched the turkeys grow. All along I have thought he would never kill them...he did and thats OK by me but actually having to watch them be killed and plucked I feel went a bit to far!!

To be fair, there was a warning immediately after the ad break. Must admit, though, it feels a bit uncomfortable to have to contemplate precisely how the meat gets onto the plate.

Exactly why I didn't watch it! Although I'm not a vegetarian, I don't think I could actually kill an animal to eat it (no flaming please). In fact, there was an interesting debate on Radio 2 a few weeks back (after the Jamie Oliver lamb slaughtering incident) about whether meat eaters should be forced to kill an animal to be 'allowed' to eat meat. Ridiculous!

As an aside, when I was a little girl, my Dad was a gamekeeper and bred turkeys one year. Naively, I helped feed them (fatten them up), not realising the fate that was in store for them. Imagine my surprise (and tantrums) when, on Boxing Day, I asked if we could go and feed the turkeys only to be told they were no longer there - and that, in fact, I had eaten some of one of them the day before

I have to say I've enjoyed the f word and specifically wanted to watch this programme.
I'm happy that my kids know that beef = cow and ham = pig etc

Ive have taught my kids this too. Not that they belived me half the time.

I couldn't kill any animal, but I do still love my meat

I have to admit that I didn't think he would kill them.

From a purely personal point it was interesting to see the journey of the turkeys and how they are prepared for Christmas. As a meat eater I chose to eat meat and therefore know that animals will have to be slaughtered.

Ultimately I did think that the turkeys were treated well and appeared to be humanely destroyed.

I'm quite pleased he did this just to show people what actually happens. As a non meat eater (due to the fact that I don't like it rather than any 'principle') I think its quite important for people to realise that meat doesn't come from the supermarket. Have eaten meat at many times when stuck in the jungle etc and its a case of eat or starve but don't it eat by choice, do love fish though.

I read (In my Good Food Dec edition) of the effect that livestock will have on the planet in say 50 years time and the question is livestock over the life of the planet. The answer is to turn veggie of course but I was a veggie for 5 years before the lure of the sausage came and grabbed me.
After watching the Jamie Oliver lamb incident I did think that was more humane than some of the abetoirs that we have in this country. I do think it is very sad though for young children to become attached to an animal to then kill it.

Good job Carol, that you don't see how those living things, vegetables, are ripped from thier life giving soil, whilst still alive, have (in the case of carrots,) their heads cut off, or ripped from their mothers arms (trees) just to satisfy your hunger!

The Gordon Ramsey 'factor' is starting to wear a bit thin, ok so he is a top chef, but the whole bawling and swearing makes him look a right pratt. It is not shock value anymore, its just boring.

ITA although I think he's a brilliant chef and great business man agree the whole swearing thing gets on my nerves.

I must admit I did not see the warning at the break!!-so apologies for that.

I am a meat eater and my children understand where meat comes from and humans kill to eat....however even a turkey should have dignity when it dies....all he had to do was close the door so we did not see the actual killing!!. My 7 year old son had gone to bed I am glad I dont think its something I would have liked him to watch. I like Gordon Ramsey way of cooking but as a person I think he has disgraced himself in this series. Hes sworn on numerous occasions infront of his children and personally I think he made the children treat the turkeys more as 'pets' than anything else

The pro-organic group would argue that the turkeys were better, more healthy and delicious because they were mollycoddled and raised in that way!
I'm sure it was discussed with those children on more occassions than what we actually saw on the telly what would happen to those turkeys.
I suppose we should be grateful they didn't have to grow their own spuds and carrots and have to deal with the trauma of cooking those too!

I agree, the children were totally aware why they were feeding the turkeys. I do agree it is not nice but then the majority of us probably sit and eat turkey on xmas day without a second thought as to how it got there.

Maybe the program was a bit over the top but it probably made many people think!
