Google TV? Can anyone explain it to me?

I just got an email for Google TV.

When I clicked on it, it took me to Dish network.

So, I googled Google TV and it says you can get a box to use with your current TV.

What does this box do and do you need to subscribe to Dish AND Google TV?

Why is this better?

I don't get it, but there are a lot of techno things I don't get, so speak to me in plain English please! :rotfl2:

Thanks,

Dawn

You don't have to have Dish--Dish offers enhanced integration with Google TV which allows some certain special features for Dish users. I'm not sure what those features are as I've never used it.

The only thing you need for Google TV is the Google TV box like the Logitech Revue (there's a Sony one too, but I can't recall its name)--and an HDTV and internet connection, of course. If you're looking for a TV service provider then Dish isn't a bad way to go (we have it and like it, but my husband's employee discount probably influences that!), but I'd not get it just for Google TV, since it's compatible with so many service providers. :)

ETA: Check out this link to see everything Google TV can do: http://www.google.com/tv/features.html (This doesn't cover those Dish extras, but I guess those are covered under the link they provided you.) If you get it, let me know how you like it! I loooooooooove gadgets but I'm committed to abstaining from spending any money on them this year. For now.

Ok, so if you get google TV, is it just a fancy Roku box or does it provide local channels too? And if it provides local channels, is there a fee per month?

I assume you also need a box for each TV?

We cannot get Dish where we live. The guy came out and said we have too many tall trees blocking the view for Dish.

It provides Netflix access; internet access while watching TV; apps for Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites; I know it does other things as well but those are the main points. Reading a bit more about it, the reactions as been somewhat mediocre--I think that for a $300 box, people want a bit more, since Rokus are so much cheaper, and people can simply use their computers for the internet.

I know they have working models at Best Buy, and I think Costco (so likely other stores as well)--if you're interested, it'd be worth heading to one of those stores (if there's one near you) to check it out.

Oh, I see....yeah, never mind....I thought this was an alternative for cable or satellite, not an internet box like Roku.

Thanks,

Dawn
