Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Oh the Goofy front, I think I like your plan, Wendy, of easing into the back-to-back days by biking a good long distance on Saturday and then running on Sunday. Or maybe that isn't your plan at all and just a random occurrence, but I think I'm going to start it. I bought a new bike last month and need more excuses to get out there on it! :woohoo:

Oh, Sarah, I wish I could take credit for it, but that plan came from my much-smarter WISHer buddy, Liz (twoWDWfools). Like you, I knew I needed to ride the bike more -- and in my case, I also know I can't take the back-to-back mileage that I once did -- so Liz's plan suited me perfectly. (Except Liz does CENTURY rides!!!!) The bike riding is what my former coach (a great guy) used to call "active recovery." Swimming works too, but I abhor it. (Go figure, my DH is a Masters swimmer and my DDs are both avid year-round swimmers. I detest the smell of chlorine! :confused3)

Good luck with the plan -- hope it works well for both of us!

I am in for Goofy also this year!! It will be my second. I had so much fun doing it this year that I signed up as soon as I got home the day after the marathon.

Time goals: Half:2:45 (stopping to take lots of pics/save energy)
Full: 5:00

I will be using the Hal Higdon plan...one of the intermediate programs, although I will only do one 20 miler (as long as we don't have a major snow storm in NJ that weekend--I didn't do a 20 miler this past year!)

Love the new thread it is great to see so many WISHers doing the Goofy!!

Ok, question for you all: How many 20 milers should I do? I have completed 2 full marathons (both goofy). I don't really want to do more than one 20 miler.

Becky, I'd say it all depends on your goals. I don't think you have to move up to the intermediate plan unless you're planning on stepping up your pace or otherwise improving your performance. You should do what feels right to YOU! Heck, didn't ultramarathoner Robert say he did the Goofy with only an 11-miler as his long run?!?

I'd let my deciding factor be whether I thought I'd be more confident during the race, and/or recover more quickly afterwards, if I did that second 20 miler. Once you've decided, don't look back. :thumbsup2

Sarah congrats on your upcoming wedding!!!!! Hope the weather cools a little for you:grouphug:

Yaaaaa Anne!!!!!

Yaaaa Hockeygirl!!!

The training to train mode is going really well, dealling with some pain issues but hopefully I can work through them

Becky, I'd say not necessary for 2 20-milers. You've done fulls. You know what it takes and how to dig down if you need. As Wendy said however, if you feel you have the need to do this, by all means...

Kim, don't ge injured by working through too much pain. You want to figure out what the cause is and work to get it fixed. Hope you are ok and it's just minor stuff.

Hey fellow goofs :)

I am too struggling with whether or not to do the novice or the intermediate Hal Higdon training program, I am doing the spring training, train to train program right now and it is going well, I too have a few sore bits that I am hoping will pass, particularly my shins, which feel like they might explode every time I run, but I am getting my shoes looked at tomorrow, and I really hope that solves the problem :) but whether to do more back to back or less, 2 20's or one and whether to walk all the 1/2 or run/walk it are all of the things that I am pondering at the moment. Hopefully I will figure it out before its time to start big miles training :scared:

Thanks for all your help and encouragement guys, its really appreciated in this corner :)

Kirsty

Oh I almost forgot - when do we get our cool yellow shirts??? I am already trying to find shorts that don't clash :)

Just popping in right now. I'm reading everyone's advice with interest. My last Goofy (also my first, 2008) I did back-to-back runs throughout the training. I don't think I'm going to do that this year. Not sure what program I'm following though. I will go over 20 miles on my LR, though, because that's what I need mentally.

But, Becky, I agree with Wendy and Lily that it all depends on your goals. I think you should be able to do one 20 miler, esp. because you're experienced.

Kirsty-Leigh: This is a brief, brief overview on the shirts. There will be a bulk shirt order sometime in the next couple of months (I think) for the shirts. It will be in advance of Disney marathon weekend. There are a couple of different vendors we use, and the orders are organized by Mel and Carrie, so you'll get the chance to fly your WISH colors in the shirt style of your preference. They're being redesigned a bit, too, I think, to represent walkers, bikers, chairs....

More later, as I read back through all the posts....

Kristy,

Ice bucket your legs for shin splints. Put a large bucket or tall wastebasket in front of your chair or sofa. Put in cold water. One leg at a time, add in some ice. Swap every 10-15 minutes. Watch tv while killing time :happytv:.

Kirsty--I have used the Novice Hal Higdon program for the last two years. The first time was for just the marathon and the second for the Goofy this past year. I just added in a few back to back runs for the Goofy. I was totally fine using this plan.

It is hard deciding on a plan. We have been reading MFM which for walkers shows your daily walks in minutes and weekends in milage. Most other plans I have seen show milage the entire week....so confusing....

what do you all do???

Hi Kim,

I've always used MfM.....I like the idea of focusing on minutes rather than miles, probably because I am really S-l-o-wwwwww. I'll be using the MfM schedule for a full and plan to be more faithful to cross-training and strength training, which in the past I have sort of neglected. And I am keeping my fingers crossed for cooler weather in FL next January!!

Thanks Pat, I am a fairly slow walker but was afraid I wouldn't be getting the milage in enough with just minutes but it obviously works for most. Just so scared of going in not prepared.....:headache:

Hockeychic - last year I had a recurring nightmare that I got to the start line for the half and all the Goofy people were there wearing these fancy backpacks that had a pocket for everything. There I was standing there in my shorts and singlet and I would panic. I must have had different variations of this nightmare for a week before I mentioned it to my husband. He laughed and said "feeling a little unprepared?"

Preparing is simply getting out there and getting the steps in. Its eating healthy and drinking healthy. But its also in thinking healthy.

This is an adventure and MOST of an adventure is in getting there.

Lily, Wendy & Debra - Thank you! I just needed confirmation that I would be fine only doing one 20 miler. I think I will just add in a couple of back to back runs maybe alternating weeks. I am always worried about injuring myself.

Becky

When I did my first marathon I only did one 20 miler. I was fine. Heck, probably could have done 18 and I would have been fine. The first one is to just to finish and survive.

This past year for Goofy I did two 20 mile runs. How much it helps, I'm not sure. But I did do back to back runs every weekend. I do them on Friday night and Saturday mornings. Friday is always half of Saturdays LR.

You can do it!
Duane

Mel, it's all about the medal, you know that, right? :teeth: Otherwise, I don't think I would be doing the Goofy. Now might be the time, with all this great support and all. Just sayin'........:rolleyes1

SUSIE!!!! Talk Mel into doing it!!!! I KNOW you can talk her into it :thumbsup2

come on Mel!!!! It'll be FUN!!!! :dance3:

Alright, the Goofy-ness is setting in. I'm excited, though; I ordered MfM from Amazon yesterday and am looking forward to reading it next month during my post-wedding cottage downtime.

Here's a question: when do people begin their back-to-back runs? Do you do them right from the beginning of your training plan, or start them closer to the end? Also, how many weeks do most people train for? I've seen 18, 20, and even 32 week training plans, but I fear that I would burn out on anything longer than 20. I started training in January (right after the Marathon Weekend) for the Rock n Roll Seattle race that is on this coming Saturday, and I feel so.... tired of it by now. I'm looking forward to a month of mostly swimming!

Anyway, I love all the excitement and energy, even this far out! I'm looking forward to beginning my training after getting back from my wedding trip!

Sarah

I have done 2 marathons and never done a 20 miler, and I was fine both races! I was planning on for this past Goofy, but as I said in a previous post, we had a major snowstorm here that weekend and I couldn't get it in.

As for back to back runs, I did them every 2-3 weeks. I didn't do them every weekend, because I didn't want to injure myself. I felt like I was pretty well trained for this year's Goofy. For Goofy 2010, I plan on using the same approach, I just need to work on my speed a little bit.
