Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Lily...I really think you need to lock this thread.

I'm innocently sitting here reading about everyone's training plans and the special 5th anniversary medal and find myself thinking...

Gee, maybe I could upgrade my half registration and try Goofy :scared1:

Mel, it's all about the medal, you know that, right? :teeth: Otherwise, I don't think I would be doing the Goofy. Now might be the time, with all this great support and all. Just sayin'........:rolleyes1

Now here's a question for you Goofy experts and soon to be experts:

If I am due to run 16 miles one day, is it OK to run a half-marathon at an event and add on more miles later in the day? In other words, will this be sufficient enough or do I need to do all the miles at the same time?

Susie: You can add on some mileage if you feel up to it. But keep in mind all the walking from/to your car, standing around before the race, and milling about the finish line. That's extra time on your feet.

It's okay to not do the extra 3 miles if you're tired. It's like a step back day in your workouts.

Come on Mel! The more-the-merrier!!

Why do I keep coming back to this thread? I am not gonna do it I tell you, I am not.

:rolleyes1:rolleyes1:rolleyes1 Oh come on, just do it! The more-the-merrier....or is it misery loves company?? Either way there is supposed to be a special anniversary Goofy medal.....:thumbsup2

Because deep down, there's something inside of you that wants to do it. Get that special medal and then retire from Goofy....for a while. :teeth:

Besides, we can all grow from your experience and wisdom. If you do the Goofy, you might come here more often and help us first-timers out.

It's calling your name............:goofy:

Holy Cow this thread took off. I was away for a few days and there are 5 pages already! I'll go back and read as soon as I get a chance.

I am doing my 2nd Dopey. This year my wife will actually run the 5K with me. That will be a treat. She is not an athletic person so it will be a special time.

Anyway, my goals this time around are 1:59 for the half and 4:29 for the full. I might back off and run a 2:10 half just to save a little something extra for the full.

Can't wait. But, I am with Chris, if I ran it right now it would be something like 5 hours for the half and a day and a half for the full :rotfl:

enjoy,
Duane

OK I THINK I'm updated to here. Hope I didn't miss anyone!!!!!:thumbsup2

Had our Relay for Life yesterday till today and I was on my feet from around noon until 1:30 am. Woke up with a charlie horse/ cramp from heck so I had to scrap my running for today. Hope I can get it in on Father's day, but we'll see. :cool2:

Anyway welcome to everyone new and as Jeff posted the bling is well worth any of you wavering I think. I mean look how happy I was after the races with my medals in my signature.

I have a 7 miler on deck tomorrow (Leg allowing) so we'll see how that goes. :rolleyes1

Forgot to mention my training plans. I will use the Higdon Intermediate II with a few minor changes. I will only run on Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat. Sat is a long run and Fri will always be half of Saturday. Also, I will only run two 20 milers.

The other days I will continue to use weights and a rest day on Sunday.

I'm taking it easy until September. Longest runs have been 8 miles a few weeks ago but usually no more than 6.

Enjoy,
Duane

It's got your name on it!

Mel, come on. You can do this!

Jeff, like those pics!

Kirsty, the ice baths are best taken with a sweat shirt and a hot cup of tea! If you've got good cold water, no ice is absolutely needed. The FL folks water never gets cold like up here on the North Coast, test out what works for you.

As far as your eating, do what you normally do. You will need to suppliment with something along the training route as the miles increase. Experiment with what will work for you.

Be sure to be mindful of good water intake for the week prior to the event.

Susie, the miles should be one group, but I think at that level you will have done 14, 16 in a disjointed style, then go to 18 and 20. I think you'll be fine.

My first Goofy, too. No ideas on times but hopefully under 3 for the half and under 6 for the full. I'm going just to have fun and no PRs this time!

Training report... After Saturday's 13mi bike ride and a very easy 6-miler yesterday, I definitely "felt it" in both hips (ITB) and Achilles. Taking some anti-inflammatories -- and a rest day -- today. It's a bit worrisome as it is far too early in my training to start hurting.

Yikes, Wendy take it easy. :flower3:

Mel, Cruella? Sign up yet:rolleyes1

We finally have the triple H weather here in southern, Ontario. Hazy, HOT, and HUMID!!!!

I really don't need to hear that. I'm leaving next week to drive from Seattle to Kitchener-Waterloo for my wedding in mid-July. I'm an Ontario native, but I've gotten so used to temperate Seattle (rarely goes below 5 degrees celcius, rarely goes above 25 degrees celcius) and I'm afraid that I'll melt. Not to mention my German Shepherd who is coming with us, and who has never been out of the Seattle area, but finds warm days here to be altogether too warm. :lmao:

Oh the Goofy front, I think I like your plan, Wendy, of easing into the back-to-back days by biking a good long distance on Saturday and then running on Sunday. Or maybe that isn't your plan at all and just a random occurrence, but I think I'm going to start it. I bought a new bike last month and need more excuses to get out there on it! :woohoo:

I can not believe I signed up for this race...it's Susie AND Pat's fault. Pat said she would NEVER do another full. I was banking on her sticking to that..see where that got me??

I'm strength training, core strengthening, and MfM full training with some back to backs thrown in. Whatever will get me across both finish lines before the sweepers, upright and smiling. Oh, and PRAYING for cool weather!!!

Add me to the list, Chris!

:goodvibes Anne

Updated to here.

7 mile training run down then 2 more walking for good measure. I have my training from last year to cheat off of, but I may not do so many back to backs. I did them pretty much every weekend.

Yay Anne!! So glad you are joining us! Although on a selfish note, I will really miss seeing you about cheering all along the course!

I need to get working on my goofy plan. I think probably a version of Hal Higdon's plan adjusted to me ;) I plan to really start training in August. For now I try to get out 4 times a week and am doing low miles and working on speed.

Becky

Ok, question for you all: How many 20 milers should I do? I have completed 2 full marathons (both goofy). I don't really want to do more than one 20 miler. Higdon's intermediate 1 has two 20 milers and the Novice 2 has one 20 miler. Am I still a novice or should I push myself and do the intermediate?

Thanks for any advice!

Becky
