Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

So does anyone have suggestions on developing a training plan for Goofy.

Start with an above-novice full marathon training program, then modify it slightly so that instead of just a weekly (or however often) increasing long run, you have periodically increasing back-to-back long runs, every week or every other week. Make sure to have a rest day before and after the back to backs.

The big difference, I think, is making sure you're used to, and prepared for, having to run the second day when you're already (a little) sore and tired.

DD17 Miranda will be joining her brother and father for her first Goofy (and first half and first full). She'll be using the Hal Higdon Novice plan with a lot of cross-training.

30)araishin (Chet Scott), 3rd Goofy
31)rKyDeX (Chester Scott), 3rd Goofy

Team Neander-runner will be in the house.

Yaaaa more crazy....I mean goofy people....lol

This is great to get input and advise from so many who are experienced at this....training start soon!!!!

Alright...Chester and family are joining the fun. Is Tracy running this year?

Kirsty...I didn't know you were doing the Women's half in St. Pete. I'll be there too!

Tricia...great to see you joining the fun!

Robert...how are your legs holding up? And how's Linda's foot? I think it's cool you're going for the perfect Goofy. Do you know how many of you there are? I know Lily...and is Wendy?

I did 3 sad little miles tonight on the TM. Legs are pretty sore...I think I'll take a rest day tomorrow. I have to work half day on Friday so I'll do my 3.5 in the afternooon at the Y, then it's 7 on Sat!

Chester, great news you've got there! Will Tracy be cheering or participating?

I still haven't decided about how I want to work the LRs. Meaning if I will be doing B2B or just Full schedule. I guess I'll determine how I'm feeling as it's going.

My leg is getting stronger. Hope to be 75% by WDW. Linda, well can't comment on. She is alive and breathing!

Chester: Good for your DD in taking on something as big as the Goofy at such a young age. It takes a lot of committment that you don't often see in today's youth. I know how much I am looking forward to running my father's first half marathon with him in January, so I am sure you both are equally as excited to complete the Goofy together.

Tried to get up for an easy three miler but my body decided to revolt and I fell back asleep. Woops! It has been a long week so I guess I wasn't fighting it as hard as I should have been. If I don't get them in tonight I will do them tomorrow morning and let everyone know how the new GPS treats me. :)

Robert glad to hear your legs are getting stronger!!

Katie.....plus you wouldn't want to muss up the do';) Sometimes you just have to listen to your body and take a break, it has been a rough few days and if you are babysitting twins this weekend you will need your strenght:hug:

Mel: Enjoy your rest day!!!

Lily: I got a great plan sent to me and it has b2b's every weekend but I think I will do 1 week b2b and 1 week just the marathon milage....I think;)

AFM: Going to get out for a walk tonight but not till late as we have finally got summer here and wow do we have it....going to be in the 40's this weekend....sorry what that is in F I don't know but probably about 110 DH tells me.

Hi Everyone,

I am in training for a marathon in October. What I've done for the past 3 marathons is to run 3 x a week. It's hard for me to fit more than that into my life. I do 1 speed workout, 1 tempo run and 1 long run. If I get the time I'll throw a short easy run in. My LR I alternate one week run shorter but faster the next week long and slow. Once my marathon is over I will have 12 weeks before Goofy. I plan to exchange my long and slow LR for b2b slow runs. We'll see how that goes.

Tricia: Good for you for getting involved with a charity. Good luck with your fund raising.

Chris: Thanks for keeping the list up to date.

Katie: Thanks for the Holabird site. They actually have the old shoes I want.

Terri: Welcome, good luck with your training.

Happy training.

Tracy is signed up for the Full. A lot will depend on how she recovers from the Honolulu Full. There's no time limit pressure for Honolulu, so if she get's her training in I have no doubt she will finish. I don't know if she will be able to pick up her pace enough for the WDW Full. Maybe if we put Chet and I on either side of her and Miranda pushing from behind, we can keep her ahead of he sweepers.:rotfl:

My son ran his first Goofy at 18. His training for it was questionable since he was away at college for his freshman year. Miranda will be attending college locally and will be living at home - so, She will have a lot more support and encouragement.

Their biggest asset is that they are young and can recover much more quickly than I can.

It's a whole different race when you are out there with a family member. The miles seem to go by faster and crossing the finish line together is awesome.

Run Happy,

Chester

Tell Tracy I'll be there to cheer her on! (Working water stop #7 and then hoping to make it over to Poly in time to catch whomever I can on the WISH team. If we get finished too late, I'll just head on over to one of the parks)

Way to go Tricia with the charity! Interesting to hear the amount to get in. As someone who would have a HUGE trouble collecting for some of the higher priced ones, it's great to hear of those that have a more manage amount that in the worst case I could pay out of pocket for. Thanks for sharing that info for future info :thumbsup2 I'll have to bookmark them, looking forward to hearing how your experience goes. Good luck in making a plan that works for you :cheer2:

Chester! Woohoo!!! Great news on hearing the family will be lining up together that weekend!!! :woohoo:

Jeanne! I'll be searching the "World" for you :thumbsup2 It'll keep me on my toes looking around :thumbsup2 Course I will stop my WS 7 to say Hi, I'd offer to help pour water but i think I'll be a bit late for that :lmao:

I hit the gym 3 times. running on the TM each time plus my core machines. Working on a 3 min run/3 min walk. Feeling good with that and will work from there. running at 12 min/mile and walking at 16:13. Feeling strong after 4 miles. Did my long day again on Thurs as there is a possibity of rain on Sat. Will try to get some miles in on Sat and rest on Sun. Definitely getting in my times (gym & miles) due to the thread. Keeps me focused :thumbsup2

I will probably be a bit MIA next week as we will be down another person at work due to vacation. Which means after the gym I'll be comatose that or curled inside a ice cream cartoon :lmao: Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!!!

Wow this thread has been busy! Glad to see everyone is doing well starting or about to start goofy training. I decided at the last minute to do DL, so I had to step up my mileage for that. Did 9.3 yesterday and am happy to report no knee issues! I am hoping that I have gotten myself into a good groove of running 4 - 5 times a week so that goofy training will not be as daunting this year :)

Hope we see you in 4 weeks! Always great to see that big smile!

Hey there Goofy-ers!

Sounds like everyone is really starting to think training!

Personally, I.... got married and went on my honeymoon last month and now am trying to make up for only running 4 times in all of July. My speed and endurance have really taken a hit and I actually felt stiff today after only running 3 miles yesterday. Now I'm scared. I have two weeks until official training starts and I feel like I've lost a big chunk of my base. I ran a half marathon at the end of June (and PR-ed!), so I feel like I shouldn't be able to fall this far this fast! :scared1:

Just wanted to stop in and say hi; I've been away for too long, but now I'm really looking forward to getting in to training! I also registered for the 5K after getting the email from Disney saying that it would be at Epcot (my favorite park!) this year, so I guess I'm a bit Dopey. :rotfl: Oh well, if you're going to get up at 3:00 am two days in a row, might as well make it three, right? Right?

Congrats Sarah. That is great news! Is your new spouse a runner too?

You'd be surprised how quickly you lose your endurance. I am reading a book on training for a Tri and it had a graph that showed how long it takes to recover from time off. The graph showed it takes twice as long to recover as you had off. So if you took 3 weeks off it will take 6 weeks to get back to where you were. Now they are talking about high level fitness but in my case (surgery) it took at least as long as I was off (6 weeks) to get back into the shape I was before I took time off.

So, don;t fight it, just take it easy and it will come back!

I bought a new pair of shoes, Asics 2140's. I will use these sparingly until I get farther into the training. These are going to be my Donald shoes at Disney so I want to make them last. On sale ($10 off) at Sports Authority plus had a coupon for $25 off if I spent $100. that was easy to do :) I'll buy another pair for the Mickey once I get another $25 coupon. Wish my local running store carried Asics.

Blister on my first run though. But, that is not uncommon until my foot gets used to the shoe. Happens almost every time.
enjoy all,
Duane

hi everyone. I got my website from the charity so I am getting ready to send out emails on that. But as far as my Goofy training I am doing ok so far. I think I am going to go with the Hal Higdon 18 week Intermediate 1 training plan - a little modified. I liked that it already had scheduled back to back runs on the weekend. According to that plan it looks like I have another 3-4 weeks to build up to 4 miles on Saturday 9/12 and 8 miles on Sunday 9/13. I did 2 miles walking on the treadmill on Saturday night and then I tried to get in at least 3 miles on Sunday but I stopped at 1 mile because my arch was bothering me. I think I am getting PF - so I didn't want to push it too much. I am sure it is due to a break in my foot 8 years ago. Not sure why it didn't bother me last year but this year its brutal. I normally have moderate to high arches but because of the prior break my left foot tends to roll inwards. So I went to the running store yesterday and told them my issue - I ended up getting a full shoe orthotic insert with really strong arch support. Problem is that I only need it for one of my feet but of course they don't sell it like that. The one thing I am not sure of is does anyone know if you have to get new orthotic inserts every time you get new shoes? Also what is the best advice as far as back to back training - I should really have 1 for each pair of shoes right?
