Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Hi All. Just found this thread. I don't know when I am actually going to start training for Goofy, I need to get with my running guru and come up with a plan. I am going to start training for a marathon on Sept 1 so I am sure we will incorporate that some how.

When is everyone else starting their training, and what plan are you following?

Hi Brandie! I'm a walker and I am following a modified MfM (Marathoning for Mortals) full plan. My official training starts TWO weeks from today. I'll be adding some strength training after my walks on Monday and Thursdays and I'll be doing cross-training on Tuesday (biking) and Wednesday (aqua-fit class). Friday night will either be more biking or another TM session and Saturday will be my LSD day. Finally, Sunday will be a day of rest. I am not planning to do huge b2b sessions since I am a little older. Plus when you are slow like I am those higher mileage walks take a long, long time. In order to cope with those long mileage days I am following the example of getnthinr (Wendy) and scheduled 5 half-marathons in the fall - this way I am sure I will be getting in my steps, plus I will be getting some motivational bling and having fun with WISHers along the way. A win-win situation for sure (I hope).

Let us know when you decide on a plan. I'm always interested in what other people are doing, and it is fascinating how one thing works for someone, and something else works for another.

Well, I've got 45 minutes on the TM to do, so I will check back in later.

Hey Goofy's!

Just popping in with a quick mileage update for myself. Got in 10 Miles on Saturday for my first double digit run although it wasn't a back to back it still felt good. Did 4 yesterday and will either do another run tonight or a back to back Wed-Thur.

Hope everyone is doing great with their training!

Congrats Sarah. That is great news! Is your new spouse a runner too?

You'd be surprised how quickly you lose your endurance. I am reading a book on training for a Tri and it had a graph that showed how long it takes to recover from time off. The graph showed it takes twice as long to recover as you had off. So if you took 3 weeks off it will take 6 weeks to get back to where you were. Now they are talking about high level fitness but in my case (surgery) it took at least as long as I was off (6 weeks) to get back into the shape I was before I took time off.

So, don;t fight it, just take it easy and it will come back!

Thanks for the advice on endurance, Duane! I'm a bit disheartened by the time off x2 rule for recovery, but I guess I'm just trying to finish the Goofy this year, so even if I'm not fast, I can get'er done. :lmao:

My new husband is indeed a runner as well, and pretty much the reason that I'm here. I originally (way back when...) chose to do the WDW half by myself, but I would have walked it and never done another distance event ever again. He talked me in to giving running a shot and now.... well, I've become my own enabler. He thinks I'm crazy for doing the Goofy (he's "just" running the marathon in January) but respects the insanity. He does come from a family of athletes.... including a sister who is still a world-class cross-country skier, despite having had both of her knees and ankles replaced over the years! :rotfl: So if I'm crazy, I'm in good company!

No Brandie, we decided to go to NYC instead....not to do the marathon but to be a tourist again. I love it there.

Spacecoast is on the radar for next year.

I have signed up for the goofy, which my family thinks I ma crazy. I am a very slow run/walker with terrible feet. I had two stress fractures from running, but those have healed (it looks like my orthotics needed to be adjusted!) But, I am excited about the challenge. I am run/walking the half with my mom and then running the full. I ran the full last year (it was my first marathon) and hope that I can do it again.

I have new shoes and a new training schedule with B2B runs to get ready for the Goofy, but decided I need lots of support to keep me motivated because my job has me working long hours as well.

My estimated time is 3:29 for the half and 6:30 for the full. But, with my feet I ma very nervous so I just want to finish or be dragged across the finish line.

Stacey I have you added and welcome to the board!

Good luck in your training and see you around......

Hi Team!

I think I've mentioned here that in the past I have been very poor at ST and XT. I've had good intentions, in fact a few years ago I purchased one of those Total Gyms (yes, the ones from the infomercial with Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley!). I had just started using it when the holidays rolled around and I needed the space in my family room for the Christmas tree. So I folded up the TG and put in it a spare bedroom. After the holidays we were dog-sitting for one of Jim's co-worker's beautiful all white Alaskan husky. In the morning when I left for work I kenneled her in her cage in the spare bedroom and thankfully closed the bedroom door.

This is what I found when I got home, after Jim cleaned up all the debris.

Somehow Snowball had gotten herself out of her cage and attacked my Total Gym! She didn't just rip it apart she demolished it. Jim said there were scraps of material everywhere! The good news is that she was no worse for the wear after her adventure and she didn't destroy anything else. That was a few years ago, and the gym has sat in the spare room. Well, with Goofy training starting soon, and being determined to do more than just the TM to prepare, I asked my handy hubby to see what he could do (initially he tried to buy a replacement board, but TG doesn't sell them - who would expect someone to "break" that part).

This is my refurnbished TG:

He did a pretty darn good job and now I am all set for training!

Wow, that hubby of yours sure is handy! If he ever runs out of projects, just send him to NC!

Pat: Your hubby can come fix our stuff any time he likes, the TG looks great, now all that is left is to use it ;)

I just had to share this with my fellow Goofy crazies. I was talking about the DL 1/2 yesterday at work and mentioned that the really major race on the horizon was Goofy in Jan. One of my coworkers is a runner-- good runner as in qualifies for Boston and has run it several times in sub 4 hour times repeatedly. He asked what the Goofy was and when I told him it was a 1/2 on Sat and a full on Sun his jaw literally fell open and he said you actually plan to run 39.3 miles in one weekend :scared1: (he looked a lot like this smiley actually) He claims I am now officially crazier than he is and spent much of the remaineder of the day looking at me like I was insane :rotfl: telling him that "everyone else is doing it" did not seem to help my cause

Thanks to all of you for being Goofy with me :goodvibes

Don't worry, Jen.....your co-worker probably doesn't "get it". If he has done all those elite races, he is probably very competitive and runs to get the best time possible. I think most people (or at least the ones that post here) that sign up for the Goofy are doing it just for the sheer joy of accomplishing something so unique, no matter what their time is. I'm sure most people are going to take it as easy as they can on Saturday to preserve their strength for the full on Sunday. That is probably not the attitude your co-worker would adopt.

You hit the nail on the head. It is a survival test more than a race. Faster runners sometimes only look at time on the clock as a measure of success where we look at the medals!

Hi Brandie,
Stopped by the running store a few Saturdays ago thought I'd see you there. Are you still helping Mike out on Saturdays?

I'm using the Higdon Intermediate II plan but a bit modified. Monday will be the longer weekday run, Wednesday the speed/hill run on alternating weeks then Friday will be half of what the Saturday long run is. I always take Sunday as a rest day and will use Tues and Thurs as Xtrain days. I want to keep up the weights this year. last year was almost all running.

I am doing the Naples 12 mile in September and the Las Vegas half in December then whatever odd races show up like the river run in December. I doubt I'll do any 5K's because I hate getting up that early on a Sat for just 3 miles :)

take care,
Duane

You guys are right. This is the same guy who said that he is jealous because I seem to be having so much fun with my running and he never felt that way. He just wasn't lucky enough to find a cool group of people like WISH
