Goodwill !!!!!!!!! Update post #49 page 4

It's obviously worth it to her to get upset about. Who are some of you to tell the OP how to feel? She knows the rules, she shops there frequently and feels the way she feels. For someone else to belittle her feelings about the situation is just not right. I don't see the puppy thing as being more unfortunate than the other just because it's a puppy. Both people are frustrated by the outcome of the situation and are/were entitled to feel the way they feel.

This thread has really been interesting and I have enjoyed reading it. NOT that the OP lost out on the item, hopefully she'll find another (or they'll hold one for her) but everyone's views and different ways that the same stores are run. But I have noticed a trend on the disboards and I don't think it is meant to hurt anyone, but it seems that everyone wants to be right. I hope my posts don't come across that way ever as I am trying to just give my view.

Anyways, I would probably be upset and this is the place to vent and what not. I am sure the OP isn't devastated over this as if someone has died, she was venting and probably feels a bit better. Atleast I hope so.

If only my goodwill was this good!

I too run little tikes toys throught the dishwasher all the time or pressure wash them. They come out sparkling! I do have problems buying "some" things used, it depends on how I can clean it and what it is.

The puppy story does put an ache in my chest. A puppy and a yard toy don't even compare.

I wanted to stand on the climber platform and tell them to get me off if they thought they could, but I had Madeline with me, and she is already shy and timid. She gets upset easily so I didn't have the option to cause a scene. She was sensing the tension, and I didn't want to make it worse for her.

I went to the Baptist Missionary thrift store that I also shop daily and guess who was there. Uh-huh, the shopper who they sold the climber to . . . :rolleyes1

I don't know or care where the climber comes from that the DM promised me.

OH MY! How funny! or Not! I think you showed good manners by not causing a scene. Glad you'll be getting one soon!

So why are you here when you should be somewhere volunteering! :rotfl:

I'm already an RN! I like to get paid for my work. I guess that makes me bad too, though, huh? Uuuggghhh! I'm done with this thread. Thanks for those who understand. To those of you who don't, good luck next time you go to a store and someone "shops" out of your cart. (Like that even happens very often)

Uh, you lost me there. I like to get paid too, I also like to not get upset about when someone gives me their opinion on something after I post it on a public message board. I must have misread your original post, I didn't realize the perpetrator had taken the toy out of your cart. My apologies!

I cant help but to post, as I"m one of the many lurkers on the thread -

I also shop a Goodwill store often, and visit a few others, one is much better, and our store's policy does say if there is no tag on the item, you may not purchase it - I got truly frustrated when I had a shirt, and pulled it out of hte cart, and the tag ripped off - in front of the cashier, she refused to sell it to me - I asked for a manager, and apealled to him - it was more expensive than the other clothes I was purchasing, AND the clerk saw me jerk it out of the cart!! He let that slide - but I was thinking, this is so not worth it!! lol

For you, I have to say you did show dignity and I think you have to have set a good example, you didnt throw a tantrum, you realized your child was become upset, and you vented on a message board, but you found a voice to complain to and you were heard!! THAT has to also set a good example for your kids!!

and I appreciate it that you ignored some of the negative confusion, and continued to post the ending of your story!!

In effect that is exactly what the shopper did - she took the toy out of her cart and got to the cashier ahead of the op - op followed the STORES RULES!! The purchaser did not, but was rewarded for getting to the cashier before the rule follower - the purchaser was probably in the know and took a chance - I mean, what a REAL DEAL!! It was worth it to the purchaser to try and cirmcumvent, and she was rewarded with the toy!

Do we really have to keep attacking the other patron here? I mean, there is a very real chance that she did not know the "secret handshake" at this store when it came to large items. And if the cashier said she was in the right, should she still have turned the item over to the OP? We can all say we would, but in that situation, most people would just pay for the item and go. It is not her fault that the store didn't have a written policy. Since the cashier took her side, she probably thinks the OP was trying to take the toy from her. Maybe she thinks "So this woman saw me looking at the climber and start to head up to pay for it and then she has someone load it up, so she can get it instead of me!"

Bottom line is, neither the OP or the other patron were at fault. If anyone was, it was the store. I feel for the OP, that she didn't get the climber. But people are jumping on a patron who we don't know from Jack! And the OP is going to get a climber, so that is cool.

I have been reading for a few days, but I wanted to add this is the policy at our Goodwill store also. If there is no tag on the item, it has to be held for 24 hours before it can be returned to the sales floor. They had a problem with people switching tags, so they have this policy. I thought it was the same at all Goodwill stores.

Atually it happens to me several times during Christmas season, I once even had to sneak my stuff back out of someone cart at Target :lmao: My DS was 13 and I had him "mind" the cart while I go fetch something--he was looking the other way and some older lady was shopping from my cart. She took what she wanted and then went to another aisle--I had DS continue to stay with the cart while I went to the other aisle and reshopped out of her cart while she was shopping off the shelf. I never would have expected that and would have been very puzzled when I got home without the dolls for DD--especially after spending so long picking out just the right ones! Don't know if she saw me take my stuff back, but she didnt' say anything.

:headache: #1 The district manager that I talked to yesterday said the cashier and manager were the ones who were wrong! Upper management says the employees were wrong! That is why they are actively searching for another climber for me! I took the ticket because that is how you claim items in this store per the store's rules. The district manager said that they haven't written the rules, but those are the rules. I had the item on a platform cart with assistance from an employee. The district manager said the other shopper woudn't have been allowed to see something small in my cart and run to the cashier and be allowed to take it away from me. It is no different with large items than small items. The other shopper could have stood there by it and asked the employee nearby for assistance the same way I did. She didn't. The cashier allowed someone to take something from my shopping cart and purchase it.

:headache: #2 It is not a secret handshake. I found out about the tag system on one of my first visits and there was television I wanted. I went to the register to get help and the cashier told me to always take the tag off something that I couldn't carry. By the time I got back there again to the tv, someone had pulled the tag. I missed out and it was my tough luck. They didn't give me the tv, but for some reason the other day, they gave the other shopper the climber.

:headache: #3 Yes, the purchaser should have turned the toy over to me if the cashier had followed the rules and not taken it away. I turned the toy over to the other person. :confused3 Why shouldn't the other person have turned it over to me if the cashier had followed the store's rules?

:headache: This is NOT the policy at the GW stores in my area! :headache:
 Am I writing in English or some other language?

I need a smiley beating it's head against a wall! Posters are telling me I'm trivial; I need to be volunteering somewhere (when I'm already employed as an RN); and I'm not supposed to pull tags off items at GW. :rolleyes1

what an entertaining thread.

to me, the tag means jack---- it's the fact that you had the thing loaded onto a cart. Um, that's possession if you ask me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

at my walmart (I hate walmart!) I found an incredible deal on a patio set--- it was the last one. Since i cannot load a huge patio set box into my cart, and since I know the kind of sneaky, conniving clientele that many walmarts attract (ew and ew), I stood by that box until a salesperson came to ME.

In that 5 minutes that it took to flag down a salesperson, three people came to look at the box I was standing next to (the patio set was out of it and on dispaly). The whole time I was LEANING on the box, which apparently meant crap to these people, as they continued to look at the box as if they were going to get the set? I don't think so!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I've just read all the posts in this thread and had one thought come to mind.

When you break a law and do something like J-walking or illegal vehicle modification you can't say to the officer, "I didn't know what the law was so I should be let go."
Because he's going to tell you that ignorance of the law is no excuse. It's your job to find out what the rules and laws are. The OP did find out and was following them.

Now I realize that no one was breaking any laws but for everyone who is kind of down on the OP and stating things like, if I were at the register I would have expected to get the product w/out the tag because I didn't know of any rules. Actually, you shouldn't have gotten the product. When you walked up to the counter to say you wanted the product you should have been informed that the correct way of obtaining such a large item was to retrieve the tag from the item and bring it up to the register, just like the OP had been told the day she wanted the television. If there is no tag on it, then someone else probably has already "put it in their cart."

I don't think the other patron was vindictively trying to undermine the OP and steal her purchase away from her. The OP hasn't said that. The OP has said that the employee and management were at fault and I agree.

And like BethR said. "Sometimes you just want to hear 'Yeah, that really does s-ck.' "

OP, it really does s-ck! And I too would have been disgusted!

Exactly, I took the tag off initially to claim it until it was put onto a cart for me. I never left the item. I stayed with it for the 45 or so seconds it took the employee to get me a cart. The purchaser wouldn't have been able to do it with a small item, but she was allowed to do it with a big item.

Thanks for understanding!

OP I am so sorry this happened to you- they(store and other shopper)should not have treated you like that. And I totally understand the tag thing. It is not that way just at Goodwill stores, but also at Consignment stores and other thrift stores. Just because other people don't know the ettiquette for large items does not mean the you need therapy, volunteer work, or a 12 step program for buying used climbers. I do hope you see the lesson in this though. The pushiest person wins. You had the ticket AND the item. You were right. Next time stick to your guns.

I just don't get this thread. The OP came to vent, in a place she was comfortable. IRL, if a friend told me the same story, I would be sympathetic to my friend. I wouldn't give her a lecture on how maybe the other person was right. :confused3

I am happy they are getting you your toy! I would be so mad too! Let us know when you get it.. I hope its in good shape too!!! I see so many toys donated to our donation center but never see them in the stores.. I am so glad to hear you actually spotted one!!! Way to go! Good luck and post again when you get it!

I just wanna know what Goodwill sells Little Tikes Playgrounds for FIVE DOLLARS! ... geesh the ones around here operate as businesses - to make money! You can get really good deals if you shop on half price day - I think Wednesdays.

Glad the DM resolved it for you.

I would agree IF this was JUST spoken to people that were friends of the OP. But posting something on a public board of nearly 100,000 members is bound to get replies where not all of them will agree (whether it's this post or another). That's the reality of a message board...everyone is going to have a different opinion or perspective and if it's not something a person wants for their thread, their best bet is to simply not post it. I'm not trying to down the OP at all, just pointing out the reality of posting ANYTHING on a message board this large.

I am glad you are getting the item you wanted. Here is the smilie you were looking for..
