Good things to do in Texas...

Hi everyone, sorry for my lack of postings recently, I am training to be a teacher and hardly have time to sleep!

My other half is in Texas around the Huston (and the North of there) for three weeks, and he wanted to know if there were any recommendations I could find from my source of all things American- DISboards!

He's especially looking for good places to eat and things to see in Huston and surrounding areas, he also might head towards San Antonio and the coast when he has some time off. Any recommendations?

Hey Kate, Christy and I are in Houston!

He could go to:

• Space Center Houston (part of the Johnson Space Center)
• Go shopping at the Houston Galleria
• Head over to the Kemah Boardwalk (Owned by the Landry's corp, ie Rainforest Cafe)
• Drive down to Galveston and check out the Beach and the historic Strand. He should be there in time for Mardi Gras.
• Tour Minutemaid Park (Baseball) or Reliant Stadium
• Go to the store and buy a pint or half gallon of Blue Bell Ice cream and devour it. Then go on a tour of the creamery.
• The Presidents Heads
• Beer Can House
• Art Car Museum
• National Museum of Funeral History
  
• MAKE HIM BUY YOU 50 BOXES OF FRUIT LOOPS!!!!!!

We heading in the direction of San Antonio this weekend. If he wants some cool things to see in San Antonio:

• He must stop at Bucees near Gonzalez. He must go to the WC there!!
• The Alamo
• The River Walk
• Any Mexican Food restaurant
• He can also look at the historic military aircraft at the Air Force Base
• There are also several Amusement parks in the area.
• San Antonio, Texas - Menger Hotel Bar - House of Lords Pub with Bullet Holes
• Bush Gallery of the Pacific War

It's funny you said that. The first time my Dad came down to Texas to visit us from MA, he bought a Stetson. He had it fitted and all. I don't know how much it sees daylight in Plymouth though. Can you imagine him wearing it to Trader Joe's?!?!?!

The Woodlands area is called "Disney Woods" and has lovely paths, trails, lakes as well as restaurants, shopping, waterway etc.
Just north of Houston, and we like it! Very safe/clean. If he's north of Houston, he should swing by.

Hi - You have been given some great recommendations. I don't know if you or your other half have traveled to Texas in the past, so I will apologize if you already know this. What frequently surprises visitors from various parts (even parts of the US) is the distance between cities. San Antonio is approximately a 3 hour drive from Houston (times may vary depending on which part of Houston, etc.) I would just make sure that you other half is aware of this before making plans to go to San Antonio! It would be a great weekend or overnight trip, but not just a day trip.

Houston also has some museums and a zoo (I love zoos, but I know that not everyone does!). I would check the web sites and see if there are any exhibits that might be of interest. (The web site below includes the zoo.)

Wow, I have lived in the Woodlands area for near 10 years and that is the first time I have ever heard the Woodlands called "Disney woods." It is very Celebration-esque around here, especially around the Market Square. They want that EPCOT feel, where you live, work, and play in one area with a Centralized transportation model.

My then-girlfriend/now-wife spent an afternoon there and we still generate people's jealousy whenever we talk about it. It was largely a symbolic gesture, as there isn't a whole lot to do once you're there. You have to really love a certain brand of Texas country music to justify the trip. But if you do, Luckenbach is a huge deal.

That's a heck of a drive for a beer and music! I grew up in Fredericksburg, about 15 minutes from Luckenbach and now live in Houston. Luckenbach consists of a general store/post office/bar and one of the oldest dance halls in Texas. It is a great place to people watch!

PGCE Primary. It's great but tough!
