what do you think? it will be able to print good photos with these specs?:guilty::confused3

With the PhotoKey package, you get all of your photos as digitals so that you can download once home. You can print them from home or at your local pharmacy. The size of the photos will range from 200-300KB with a DPI of 300. They are large enough to print a clear 8x10 print. Please let me know if you have any questions.

At 200-300k, and I'm assuming JPEG level 15 compression, I can guess that these pictures are being shot at 1152*864, or with a 1MP camera, or they are being compressed to about a 1MP size. Those pictures are usually safest printed as a 3x5, and MAYBE a 4x6, but I wouldn't stretch those pictures much wider than that.

For good 8x10 pictures, you'll need files about 5 times as large as the size they're offering you.

The rule of thumb is take the size you want, and multiply it by the DPI. You are looking for an 8x10, so 8*300=2400 and 10*300 is 3000.

Now multiply these two numbers together: 2400*3000=7.2 million.

At 24bit color depth, each pixel is 3 bytes, so you're looking at a 7.2MB*3=21.6MB file uncompressed.

An acceptable JPEG compression can shrink a file to about 1/15th the original size, so 21.6/15=1.44MB/file.

Your file size can show an approximate picture size, by working backwards: 300KB*15 for compression = 4.5MB uncompressed. Divide by 3 for color depth = 1.5 million pixels. Divide by DPI twice (once for length and once for width) and 1.5 million / 300 / 300 = about 16.66667 square inches of picture. A 3x5 is 15 square inches, so that's the best choice to print them as.

Now, there are two major assumptions I made that, if changed, can affect the printable size of the picture. Increasing the compression ratio and decreasing the color depth can change the maximum picture size, but at a loss of quality for the picture overall.
