Good news, bad news

I'm so sorry, rajah. I know I would have the surgery done too. I would do anything to help my babies, even if I had to charge it. I hope everything works out for you and Blaze.:D

I guess $2000 does seem extreme but then so does posting a P & PD thread every time the cat sneezes.........

I know you are hurting and all, but it kind of concerns me when people insist that their pets be treated like human babies and then balk at the cost of care. That kind of surgery on a baby would be much more (albeit you would have most likely insured a baby).

I balk at the cost of human health care, too. ;) Pay it, yes, but balk.

I'm going to bite my tongue at this response and just say you obviously don't have any animals that you care for like they were your children, and if you do, you've never lost one after only having it for 2 weeks. If you did, you'd understand the fear and how sick I am over how sick Blaze is.

Tammi

Again, you may want to consider calling A&M. Remember that it is a teaching hospital/clinic and may be able to do the surgery at a lower price since this would also be giiving the vet students a chance to observe the procedure. I know that I am sounding like a broken record here but my mom has used A&M for a couple of her dogs and have been very happy. Admitedly, my sister is a grad and still knows many of the faculty which may have helped.

Again, good luck.

Kyle -- I thank you for continuing to remind me of A&M, but for something like this, I want someone with years of experience, not someone learning. I know people have to learn somewhere, but I don't want "newbie" mistakes made on Blaze. I mean absolutely no offense to A&M school or any other vet schools -- I also don't like "newbies" to treat me for any kind of surgery either. I'd probly be okay with A&M if they were closer for a neutering or something like that, but not something of this nature.

Plus, I want to be nearby for his surgery and until he can come home. This specialist is 20 minutes away from the house, 10-15 from work. A&M is at least 2, possibly 3 hours away, maybe even more depending on traffic (remember, I'm at least 30 minutes south of you, more depending on traffic). So for my concern, I'd need to spend the night before the procedure (to get him there early enough), plus 2-3 nights for them to keep him, plus dining and gas, plus finding someone to care for Skye and Sienna (easiest thing of the whole set), plus I'd be scared to death that something would go wrong and they wouldn't know what to do. When 3 vets who have been practicing for over 20 years all strongly recommend we go to the specialist, we're going to the specialist for this one.

Thanks for recommending, though.

As to the abscess...sometimes an abscess cannot be cured with antibiotics, it could damage surrounding organs, and it could burst and spread the infection. Surgery sounds reasonable to me.

$2000 sounds expensive to me, but all we have done is eye surgery. But when I found out Sadie had the heart defect, I would have paid to try to fix it.

It would not just be vets in training who would do surgery, but rather the student with a competant, highly trained instructor at his/her side. Once upon a time I also did not know how to do a lot of things as a nurse....

As for our furbabies, ask for PD anytime you like. If someone does not like it...too bad for them. {{{Hugs}}}, prayers and pd that Blaze flies through the surgery with no complications!

Oh, then I misunderstood or misinterpreted when you said

but $2000 for surgery on a cat is totally, completely rediculous.

I put emphasis on "on a cat" as if that was what was making it ridiculous.

I am glad that I saw elsewhere (didn't see it here, but maybe I missed it) that the breeders who you bought Blaze from are helping out with the cost of the surgery. That is great!

Keep us posted. MOST of us really care.

That's a pretty snippy thing to say. I think everyone who posted genuinely cares about Blaze and hopes he pulls through.
Don't turn this thread into a snit fest.

Rajah,
I really hope Blaze pulls through. I know it's scary to be new home owners and have a sick pet. We had to shell out $$ unexpectedly when one of our beagles started throwing up blood (right after we put the deposit on the house). I hope you find a way to swing the cost of the surgery. and I truly hope he recovers quickly :)

FWIW, I had to stop at my vet's this afternoon. I asked them how much it would cost for that surgery if I needed it done on one of my dogs. They have a surgical specialist inhouse, and they said it would be closer to $3000. I'm really glad I have pet insurance

Jenz -- thanks. And thanks for remembering *why* it seems so expensive -- we just bought a house a few months ago and we're still getting used to the budgeting that is required when owning one. :(

$3000 at your place!! Double-yikes!

(And Carl was responding to the one person who indicated this was ridiculous that I'm asking for PD for a cat. Everyone else has been nothing but supportive)

:( I will go back to lurking. Does everything have to turn into a debate?

*hugs* Dopey. I, for one, appreciate you posting and your support.

"And Carl was responding to the one person who indicated this was ridiculous that I'm asking for PD for a cat. Everyone else has been nothing but supportive"

Actually I got the impression that the poster couldn't believe that you were complaining about the cost of the surgery when you constantly post about and ask for people for P&PD for your cats.

Sorry but I have to agree. I know I was very surprised to see your complaint about the cost considering what you have gone through with your cats.

If one of my kids needed surgery that cost $2,000 I wouldn't even think twice about coming up with the money. I wouldn't even have posted about the cost, just posted that they needed surgery.

You insist that you think of your pets as children yet your first reaction was to post a complaint about the cost on the DIS.

Sorry but I am with pnelson on this and if posting this makes me a bad person then so be it. It wouldn't be the first time, it won't be the last.

Well, EXCUSE ME for having so many bills, some expected, some unexpected, that we're going to have a hard time paying for this surgery. And EXCUSE ME for being offended because that other poster compared asking for P&PD for what could be CANCER to a SNEEZE. And EXCUSE ME for thinking that anything medical related is too expensive. I didn't come here and post the complaint I was having to my friends and family about the cost of my dental procedure. I didn't come here to complain about the cost of the asthma medication and other medicines I'm having to get, all of which are more expensive now than they used to be. But I've been complaining about those, too.

I'm through. Yes, I'm sensitive, but right now I'm looking at the possible loss of someone very dear to me and I'm not going to take people putting me down for thinking something is expensive and having financial problems when it comes to forking out $2000+ (don't forget, we've already put nearly $1000 out on diagnosing this) at a moment's notice.

Anyone else who wants updates on Blaze, email me ( rajah@stardustdreams.net ) . I'll make an email group and update you there. Don't bother emailing if you're just going to put me down for my feelings, opinions, and problems.

Good bye. Maybe I'll come back when things have settled down.

Rajah I've just emailed you.{{{hugs}}}:sunny:

Tammi I'll be sending you a email soon.

Maybe we shouldn't be picking Tammi's posts apart. I can only imagine that she is pretty stressed right now and hasn't been getting much sleep. We also don't know her financial situation. When Tim was laid off we did wonder and worried where we were going to get the money to pay for Johns therapies. Luckily we did get ins. for it all but until that point we did have a lot of sleepless nights.

Tammi just remember its a full moon.

You know what people? All she was doing was updating us on her cat, and yes, sometimes having to come up with the money can be difficult. And it IS a LOT of money. When she is already stressed, why do some people feel it necessary to come in and dump on her?

:( {{{BIG HUGS}}} Tammi... sounds like you sure could use them now. I know w/o financial assitance I'd be having trouble and ranting like this as well. Hang in there and it will work out for the best, I am sure. Give your beautiful boy a hug and kiss from me.
