Good Clean Fun or Indecent Exposure

In my son's high school there was a date, I think it was 4/30. If you did anything to get you suspended, no matter how big or small, you did not get to participate in prom (first week of June) or graduation. Being the parent of a child who did not get to participate in graduation due to stupidity :rolleyes1 I think it stinks. What stunk(?) even more was that I found out from friends his name was announced for 2 awards and his face was splashed all over the band video. The band teacher apparently didn't agree with the banishment, either :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Edited...ok, I see you specified "tuxedo thong" but I'm afraid I don't know what that is. Not sure I want to, either!

Tuxedo thong has a tiny little cumberbund and itty bitty bow tie, is usually black & white with a wee little boutonniere.

Ugh...I cannot stand how little tolerance everyone has for everything these days. no hugging, no hand holding, no silly harmless senior pranks. The world has lost it's sense of humor.

Five will get you ten that he has his graduation prank all planned out and ready to go, so no, he should not be allowed to participate in the ceremony. He has proven that he cannot be trusted to behave like an adult at formal events, so I don't think that he should have the privilege of attending them in the near future.

Essentially, what he did was moon the crowd. I would probably have gone for a shorter suspension since it was not during school hours.

Oh, please. My kids attended the same hs I did; and it is tradition that the weeks heading into finals are full of senior pranks. In fact our school message board had a thread the other day all about things everyone did as seniors and didn't get caught. Some of those pranks would rate a LOT higher than this one and not one senior pulled a prank at graduation. And there was plenty of stuff pulled at prom. They are just blowing off steam.

You only get one hs graduation and not allowing this kid to participate is way too harsh. I am so tired of everyone thinking they can make one kid an example to another---it doesn't work.

I think to teach him a lesson they should suspend him for 5 days, and leave him hanging, but at the last minute allow him to graduate. Make him sweat it out.

harmless fun, no one was hurt.

If they do ban him, I hope he makes a thong appearance run though at gradution. If they let him graduate, he better keep all his stuff covered.

Harmless fun. No damage. I think the Principal could have given the kid some sort of limited school/community service. Same purpose. Less harsh. Just my .02.

Either way, the kid will go down in infamy. He and his classmates will reminisce over that stunt in years to come. Something to chuckle about.

Friday night, one of our seniors removed his pants and ran from the prom in full view of most of the guests in a tuxedo thong. The principal has suspended him for five days and he will not be able to participate in the commencement ceremony. The debate, of course, from the students' perspective (and I hear there is a petition to allow him to walk with his class) is that this is too harsh. The principal feels as though he's actually cutting the kid a break by not getting the police involved and that actions have consequences. I side with the principal, but then again I'm old.

Thoughts on the act and the punishment?

I bolded the part that I think is ridiculous. I don't see what the police would do. It doesn't appear that a law was broken. That was not indecent exposure by most people's standards.

I work at a HS and that seems like a harmless Senior prank. We all had our doorlocks superglued one year as a Senior prank - not funny and very expensive to repair.

I think it's excessive. I think people need to be a lot more worried about what kids are doing after the prom, than a silly prank during prom.

I think it's a good idea to be semi-aggressive with the punishments for all of these senior pranks. When I was in hs, we had some horrible pranks. Most were 'harmless' though some were expensive to the school, but in one prank, they thought it would be funny to raise a beer keg up the flag pole. Well, the keg came crashing down ON the students and one of them ended up seriously injured - paralyzed I think if I remember correctly. I'm sure it just started as harmless fun.... but with some pretty nasty consequences.

I'm dating myself here, but in the 70's we had STREAKERS during graduation!

While I agree that we need to crack down on pranks, my criteria for suspension is 1) was it dangerous to him; 2) was it dangerous to others; and 3) was it breaking a law. It seems that none of the criteria were met here.....a suspension, a public apology- maybe. What are you teaching the young man? Probably nothing. It was at prom, not at school- given some the dresses that the young ladies wear these days, it probably was no worse (or no better!).

A 3-day suspension, maybe. I wouldn't have him miss graduation....but I might check under his graduation gown to make sure he wasn't wearing a graduation thong!

I'm Old too...and wish I can run around in my 'tuxedo thong'!!!!:yay: Whatever that is?????:confused3

Suspension for 5 days for a HS Senior IS the greatest gift you can give them. I mean really what kind of punishment is THAT!:lmao::lmao:

I'd let him in the Ceremony. The Police have MUCH more important things to do them get involved with a streakin kid.

My son got suspended during his senior year for stuffing his pants for a skit they put on for the whole school. (He was playing a gym teacher) His dad and I agreed that his punishment (2 days out of school) was legit, but we still snickered. I think "the tuxedo thong" is hilarious, and just the kind of thing the kids will all remember at their 20th reunion.

Somehow, we've managed to suck all the joy out of life.

I think he should be allowed to attend and participate at his graduation ceremony! The whole point of a senior prank is to leave a memory and this one did no harm.:sad2: There was no revenge, no destruction or vandalism and no animals were hurt in the process. It is a shame that punishments are taken to extremes.

Let him graduate but nominate him at school for having the tiniest tuxedo package at senior prom. Loss-of-face would be punishment enough. :teeth:

Was the stunt stupid? Yes. Criminal? No.

Is the punishment justified? Arguably, yes. I'm sorry, but students have to realize that this late in the game there's only one real stick left that a Principal can use... barring participation from commencement. How many Seniors would actually care about being suspended from school for a couple of days? "Oh please Principal Rooney! Whatever you do, don't make me stay home and sleep in for a couple of days! Please don't!!!!"

I agree with the principal. No graduation ceremony. He can pick up his diploma from the office afterwards.

How do we know he won't do something equally stupid at graduation?

Was it clearly spelled out ahead of time what the consequence would be? If so, then live with the consequence.
