SWA website says you can check golf clubs in a hard case in place of one of your two checked items so long as they don't weigh more than 50 lbs. Anyone know if it has to be a hard case or any travel case will do?

here is the verage from SWA

Golf bag in hard-sided golf bag carrying case provided by Passenger, including clubs, balls, and shoes. Hooded golf bags or golf bags in a soft-sided carrying case provided by the Passenger will be conditionally accepted.
Note: Overweight charges will apply to golf bags exceeding 50 pounds.

Conditional Acceptance
Carrier may, at its sole discretion, but is not obligated to, conditionally accept the following categories of items for Carriage as Checked Baggage subject to the Passengers assumption of risk for damage to or destruction of such items. Checking items in the condition described below is considered by Carrier as Passengers agreement to this assumption of risk.
(1) Fragile or perishable items
(2) Previously damaged items
(3) Improperly or over-packed Baggage
(4) Soft-sided cases or unprotected/unpacked items
They mean that if you use a soft case they can not guarantee they won't get damaged.

No airline guarantees any checked baggage will not be damaged, hard or soft sided.
True, but the chances of golf clubs in a hard case being damaged are much less than in a soft carrier.

I think that's the point the airlines are trying to make. But, as usual, I could be way off base.

Thank you, but I had already read that.

I found a case on amazon that is soft sides but has great reviews. That is why I was asking for clarification. If anyone has checked a soft side bag that would be good info.

You might want to ask this question over at FlyerTalk. While most of the experienced SW fliers over there use it for business travel, there's bound to be a few who have flown with their clubs.

My husband flies a lot with his clubs. He has a custom rolling soft sided bag that was made through a company at his country club. He has never had any damage to his clubs.

I've honestly never looked at the interior of the bag as I'm not interested in golf so I've got no clue as to how padded the top section is where the club heads would sit.

Of course, now you can bring clubs (2?) through security. Just make multiple trips. :rotfl:

Give Southwest a call and ask.
