Goldendoodles What Do You Think?

Thanks for the info. So what she writes about Parvo Virus is not a ligit reason?

No, she has a right to be concerned about Parvo, but simply removing your shoes and leaving them outside the house would go a long way to alleviate the possibility of carrying it in to her puppies. I have great concerns about someone that does not let you see the puppies until the day you pick them up.

When we got our first dog, we went out and saw him several times before we picked him up to bring him home. When we got our current dog, we got him at six months old from the breeder because they had kept the litter that long to decide which one they would keep to show. When he was born, we didn't even know we would be getting a dog, let alone knowing we would get one from this breeder. We were going with a different breeder, but they held off breeding their dog, and they found this breeder for us that had a couple of puppies available. So, the first time we saw him was the day we brought him home. But, had we known we were going to get a puppy from them, we would have made many visits before bringing him home.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can take precautions to protect the puppies from disease. I am sure this person is a wonderful breeder, but there are just a few things that concern me after reading her site.

Here's a site to read about Parvo. http://www.animalclinic.com/parvo.htm

Thanks. I was trying to narrow it down to a breeder that was within driving distance because I did not think that having the dog flown to me would be good for the dog. What do you think?

Jumping in again - definitely find a breeder within driving distance. Your breeder is your main support system with this dog, and it close by when you need them.

We have two black Standard Poodles. I'm severely allergic/asthmatic around dogs. I have no problem with Poodles. When I visited our first Poodle breeder her adult female came up and licked my face. I put my arms around her and didn't itch or scratch. Tiffany, I would have your husband visit the breeder and pick up a puppy to see if he would be allergic to the Goldendoodle. I knew immediately I would be fine around Poodles.

Just for your information Standard Poodles are good with children. Some Standard Poodles are aloof my two boys love children, people and other dogs.
They would lick you to death.

I have to second that. My Standard Poodle is aloof with strangers at first, but once he has been properly introduced he is great. A very loving dog, a wonderful watchdog, and not high energy indoors(he's 5 now.) He sheds very little and my DH, who has severe allergies and other lung issues, can easily be around him. My only complaint about him is that he is a great big scaredy-cat during thunderstorms. :rotfl:

I would not fly a dog to me, I know they usually fare well with that, but I am set on visiting the breeder ahead of time, checking the puppies before bringing it home, "meeting" the mom dog and dad dog, seeing where the puppies were raised, seeing her in person, etc. A GOOD breeder will not sell a pup to someone she can not meet - she is careful about releasing her pups to people, and wants to make sure you are ready for one. A good breeder will want you to visit her pups, and teach you about them. She will require you to sign a contact, promising to spay/neuter your pup (to prevent backyard breeding) and also to return the pup if you ever get to the point in which you can't care for it anymore - so it does not end up in a shelter or rescue. A good breeder will raise the pups in a home environment, so they are used to all the sounds that go on in a house and interacting with humans. By never seeing them, you can't be certain where they come from.

I post on a pet board, and there was a poor girl a few weeks back who lost her pup to Parvo - came home with it, when they flew her the pup. Turns out, the lady they thought the whole time was the breeder was just posing as one, she is a middleman for puppy mills in Missouri (most puppy mills are in Missouri due to their laws, and it's a terrible terrible crisis). She was the broker, and nothing else - but she had a great website, sounded like she knew what she was doing, sent them pictures, etc. Only when their poor puppy became violently ill in 2 days did they learn who she really was, and where their pup really came from - their pup didn't make it, but they are taking legal action against the woman. THAT is why I would never trust someone without meeting them, even crooks can sound really sweet and like they care... just not worth the risk.

And it is a good idea to be close enough to your breeder to call upon them if you need help =)

I must say GOOD FOR YOU for doing some research!!!! Too many people get a bee in their bonnet about wanting a pup and buy from a pet store, never even realizing their pup came from a puppy mill somewhere... You will make a great doggy mom!!!!!!! =)

I just saw this thread. I have a Goldendoodle. I will tell you about mine. She is now 17 monthes old and has tons of energy. She does shed some, by some I mean more than a Poodle (that sheds none) and much less than a Golden Retriever. When I brush her I will get hair out but if she brushes up against us, we will not get hair all over us. We have never had any problems as far as allergies go, I'm allergic to cats though, not dogs. The problem with allergies that I can see would be in the springtime, if the dog is outside, I could see pollen possibly sticking to the hair, since it's so long, and maybe causing problems (a quick brushing will probably help this).

The personality of ours is very friendly. She loves, loves, loves all people & dogs, I think she loves them more than us. We do have to leash her when we have company because she will jump all over them, sit in their lap, etc. She is extremely tolerant of kids & loves them tremendously. The kids have accidentally stepped on her tail or feet, will run by her & trip over her head, pull on her hair and tail, she NEVER has snapped or made any aggressive moves. She very much has the personality of a Golden Retriever, just a happy, goofy, love everybody personality. She is a real clown.

I would suggest having a ton of patience as well, these dogs can be very mischievous. Also, these are family dogs, they do not want to be left outside, they want to be right where you are.

They also do require upkeep. They need to be brushed a 2-3 times a week. I admit, I'm a little lazy in that department. I have to get her belly shaved every few monthes because she doesn't like to be brushed there, rubbed yes - brushed no.

I think this is a great breed & alot of fun. Just do your homework & like Jennifer S said, visit www.goldendoodles.com and the discussion forum address is http://disc.server.com/Indices/141437.html

Jennifer S, if you're reading, I LOVE your tag:wave2: . Hope you & Riley are doing well. We need a DIS Doodle Club.
