I did not watch the entire golden globes, I was too busy watching the Patriots take a beating.

But, I heard something about Ricky Gervaise disappearing for part of the show or something? Does anyone know where he went? It sounded like he was missing for a while. For those who saw it, who filled in while he was gone?

Just curious.

No one. It was an announcer that announced the presenters. It was really odd. He was gone for a good hour and then when he came back, he had really toned down on his jokes. Its almost like the big wigs talked to him.

When did that all happened? I did tape it and did ff through allot of the commercials but I saw almost all of it.

What presenters came out with the announcer?

I deleted it from my DVR so I don't know. It was the middle of the show. Maybe an hour and a half in.

From what I heard on the radio this morning, it seems some people took offense to him...guess some people do not appreciate good comedy. I hear both Johhny Depp and Bruce Willis were both upset by him...So I guess they told him to tone it down, or he was done for good....

Bruce Willis? You mean Ashton Kutcher's dad? :rotfl::rotfl:

LOL They appreciate humor.... when it's about non hollywood types and people they don't like or disagree with.

I think "good comedy" is very subjective. I thought a lot of his "jokes" were very mean spirited. He was trying to be edgy but went way too far. I turned it off because I thought he was awful and I don't like alleged humor at the expense of other people.

ETA: I love British humor, some of my favorite shows are old BBC ones like Keeping Up Appearances and Fawlty Towers so it is not that I dislike dry British humor, I just dislike his version.

It was after he bashed both the head of the Hollywood Foreign Press and then Robert Downey Jr. made a comment stating how overtly mean spirited the show was this year, that he seemed to be missing for a good hour.

Then when he did show up, he simply announced the presenter, and the second time back out, he had it written down on the back of one of those gold cards that he read off of while introducing Tom Hanks & Tim Allen.

There is quite a difference in humor, dry humor, British humor, and all the descriptions I've seen that have been used to defend/describe him, versus humor used in a guise to passive-aggressively put down and attack someone. Ricky was the latter. Ricky was just plain mean. People can't overlook the content and just say it was humor.

Award shows are supposed to celebrate & highlight the BEST in the people there, not be used as a time to drag out everything in a person's closet and publicly embarrass them all over again. Ricky used it as an opportunity to ambush attack many people in the GUISE of jokes.

I hope that is last time he asked to host anything. He came off to use as rude and mean spirited. It's on thing to joke around but he made it very personal.

When Ryan Secrest interviewed him on the red carpet, Ryan said, 'that was Ricky Gervais who will be hosting for part of the show tonight.' I hate to disappoint all you rumor mongers(j/k guys) but I think his absence was planned.

Ricky Gervais was hilarious. I adore him and his sense of humor. He was actually quite tame last night compare to how he usually eviscerate the likes of Karl Pilkington (those who know Ricky know who I am talking about). Hollywood can dish it out but they suck at taking it. The GG people knew what they were getting with Gervais, so they can't act surprised when he acts like..well..Ricky Gervais!

I saw on Good Morning America during an interview with Pierce Morgan (who is interviewing Rickey Gervais on Thurs), Morgan made a comment about Gervais was "pulled" in the second half of the show.

what usually bothers me about these situations is:

they hire "Ricky Gervais" and then are shocked/ticked/disappointed that they get "Ricky Gervais",,,,,KWIM!?

he was fully open in interviews about what he was going to do and what to expect from him!!!!

oops - sorry Jennasis, you had already made the point! I missed the second page before I posted)

This.

So it wasn't just me.

Just out of curiosity, what did he say in insult the head of the hollywood foreign press?

The only part I saw was him bashing Angelia and Johnny Depp, insuating nobody saw their movie.

and that was the joke of the week: the fact that it was nominated at all and nominated in "comedy".

I really want to think JD has a thicker skin and more grace than that - it is what it is!!!!

Hollywood takes itself way too seriously, which is why I loved Ricky's performance last night. IMO, many of those overinflated egos need a little air let out from them once in a while to let them know that they are not safe from ridicule, even from within.

His act reminded me a lot of Chris Rock's performances. Chris was never afraid to tell it like it is, either.

That's like saying Ricky's behavior should be exactly the same at a funeral & at a ball game.

There is something called being appropriate to the situation, while still being one's self. :sad2:

Ricky IS brilliantly talented, and he has the intelligence to know to reign it in with some appropriateness.

This wasn't a celebrity roast, which can also get out of hand - but people know to expect it, it was an award show honoring and celebrating people.

I think Tim Allen summed it up. "Ricky Gervais used to be fat & funny. Now, he is neither."

I think this was a time where the former fat kid had an opportunity to get back and MEANLY poke fun at all those kids on the play ground who made fun of him. Too bad, passive aggressive hostility was misplaced and his targets were his peers supporting him and not those old kids on the playground. :sad2:

Just out of curiosity, what did he say in insult the head of the hollywood foreign press?

It was while he was introducing the head of the Hollywood Foreign Press. He said something to the effect of referring to his age, by needing to be there at the toilet to wipe his butt, get him to a walker & put his teeth in.

We poke fun at ourselves on the Old Fogies thread all the time for getting older. We don't mean spiritedly humiliate another person in front of a thousand peers when they weren't expecting it.

They seemed to like him enough to have asked him BACK this year after he hosted last year. He wasn't much different than he was last year.

And the GG's are neither a FUNERAL or a baseball game, so not a valid comparison IMO. The show has an open bar the whole time for cryin' out loud. It isn't quite the bastion of decorum some would like to make it out to be, like the Oscars.
