I just saw this and groaned. Granted, he may be okay as an actor (I was not one of the twenty people who saw The Invention of Lying and I've never seen the British version of The Office.)
As a person, he leaves a lot to be desired as far as I'm concerned, but I'll reserve judgment on the acting portion until I actually watch it.
What I haven't been able to figure out from the other night was whether or not Stever Carrell's reaction to him was genuine, joking, or scripted.
The Invention of Lying was terrific. The original British "The Office" was hilarious, as was his show "Extras" and his podcast. In many MANY ways, the British Office outshines the American version (which I also love).
