Going wireless, suggestions for DSL router

I am pretty computer literate except when it comes to wireless internet. We currently have DSL through ATT. It is a modem that connects by a phone line to the computer. I want to get a wireless router so DS and DH can use their laptops around the house (actually for me to use the laptop around the house). I asked ATT and there is no extra charge which was my big fear. He said to get a router that is DSL compatable. Anyone else have this and what is a good but not too expensive one to get?

I believe that the LinkSys brand is pretty good and commonly used. I've seen them at Target, Best Buy, etc. I know several people that use them.

My sister uses LinkSys and likes it. I use Belkin and like it.

One thing I do is to get on electronic review websites and read reviews from users. That may help you decide what will best meet your needs.

I just bought a Cisco Linksys E2000 router two weeks ago when our D-Link died.

It was SO easy to set up - took all of 5 minutes to get the main computer on line, and just a few seconds for each of the other wireless devices we use to connect to a secure network.

Nice range too - my son hooked his XBox up to it and its down in the basement.

Was that easy? I got my son the wireless thing for his XBox (for a Christmas present) and was wondering how that was going to work.

FYI - it looks like a telephone wire, but it's actually a CAT5 cable. Make sure you don't use a phone wire with your internet connection because it won't work!

I'm a fan of Netgear routers. Whatever you do, make sure you password protect your router so neighbors won't steal your bandwidth or have access to your network.

I have a question, did you buy the box from att? If so you dont need a router as this box is a router. I would call att and ask them if so they will help you set it up and then all your laptops and things will be connected. I purchased a router thinking I needed one and I called att and the man said no and he hooked me up to everything. I wasted 60 dollars. Jo

No. What I have now is just a modem and not a router. I can buy one from ATT for about $100 but didn't want to spend that much.

We got one from our DSL company when they hooked up the DSL. Does ATT have one like that? It's a SpeedStream I think.

If you don't already have a router make sure you get one that has gaming in mind. We were using a Netgear router to wirelessly connect up our PS3 - we had a fair amount of lag. Reading on line, I learned that Netgear routers have a bad reputation in the gaming community for excessive lag. We recently upgraded to a Linksys E3000.
