Going to the beach - questions!

Ft. deSoto County Park is at the far southern tip of St. Pete; the causeway that leads to it is very near the approach to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
The North beach is the best one in the park; it has a concession stand and good shower facilities, but is otherwise primitive, and the water is very clear for that part of Florida (not Caribbean clear, but nice.) There is also an old Spanish-American War fort to explore, a GREAT fishing pier, and kayaking through the mangroves if you are into that.
There are also some nice bbq grills there, as well as picnic tables...all in the shade of the pine trees, just past the parking lots.
My ds has seen dolphin playing in the water there on several occasions...just so pleasant there.

The Mrs and I stayed at the Sirata on St Pete's beach last spring and we loved the area. Seemed a little cooler on the gulf coast than on the Atlantic coast, especially in the evenings, but way warmer than back home in Manitoba. The beach was awesome and the sunsets were spectacular. Went for a paddle but never really went in the ocean. There were signs on the beach entrances about Stingray season so we were a little spooked about going in for a swim.

Just thought I would add the following about the traffic in Florida:
We have been to Minneapolis many times and I am of the firm belief that if you can drive the traffic on I-94, 35W or 694, then I-4 through Orlando is a cakewalk.

If you really hate heavy crazy traffic, never go to Miami. Those people on I-95 in Miami are INSANE. It seems that the 75 MPH speed limit is just a suggestion and you will cause road rage if you drive this SLOW ;)

Ha! Well, that's good to hear! I can barely tolerate them - we take the side streets whenever possible....I reallllllllllllllllllllllly hate traffic. I ended up bawling Friday night in rush hour...I just get so overwhelmed!

Thanks, all, for the great advice! I was looking at Jetty Park - I think my boys would love that! We are definitely hitting the Atlantic side...and it will be either Cocoa Beach or Jetty Park! Much appreciate the advice!
