I went to see matchbox twenty, Sugar Ray, and Maroon Five in Boston last night, and had a blast. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. I had great seats--front row balcony right next to the stage.
Maroon Five was good, but nothing impressive. I was very into their music.
Sugar Ray was unbefreakinglievable. Mark McGrath is just a huge ball of energy. He didn't stop moving the entire set. He was just running all over the stage, and dancing like a maniac (I turned to my friend at one point and said, "He really needs a stripper pole"). He ran into the audience last night, as well. Picked some woman out of the crowd and had her sing "Fly" with him. Mark's onstage banter is just sweet and interesting--makes me think he must be a pretty nice guy. I thought they were the put on the best performance of the three bands last night (although I love matchbox twenty's music more than I like Sugar Ray).
matchbox twenty was great, but I thought Rob Thomas was one of the least charismatic singers I have ever seen onstage, which was very surprising to me because he is such an amazing talent. After seeing a dynamic frontman like Mark McGrath, watching Rob Thomas was like watching my grammar school music teacher walking around the room while teaching us a song (picture someone walking around a class room, finger wagging in the air like a conductor). He sounded great, but in my opinion, he just doesn't have that great of a stage presence. Don't get me wrong, I loved their set, love their music, and they were great, I just thought Rob was a bit of a bore onstage.
Just as a side note, Mark McGrath watched almost the entire matchbox twenty set from the side of the stage, and he was having a blast. It was almost as much fun watching him watch matchbox twenty as it was watching matchbox twenty. He was just singing along, and dancing. At one point, he was talking on his cell phone, and then he held it up so whoever he was talking to could hear matchbox twenty. It was funny watching the girls flirting with him while he was watching the set. I'm an observer of human nature, and watching him interact with people was interesting. He was always touched people when he was talking to them, and he looked like he was really into the conversations, and very sincere.
Well, that's all for now.
