Going to All 7 Continents

I have no way to back this up but I would guess that 75% of the worlds population would say 6 over 7. It could be that only in N. America that 7 is considered.

i also have nothing to back this up, but I would guess that 75% of the worlds population would say 7 over 6. Everything I find online says the most common convention is 7. Even European sites. I asked a colleague of Indian descent and he was taught 7 (which led to an amusing conversation about the Indian sub-continent as well, lol)

I don't even understand why some would say 6. To me, it's 5 or 7. If the argument is that Europe and Asia are connected, then so too are the Americas.

The most conventional system is 7. I feel like some scientists just want to make a name for themselves and so they develop these unconventional systems just to get their 15 seconds. And then the people who like to be different latch on to it.

And I think some people just don't like change and will resist change no matter what. In science, when we see something that is incorrect, science requires it to be corrected. Well by the definition of what a continent is, Eurasia is one. We don't believe in four elements any more do we? Well then it's time to ditch the ancient Greek interpretation of Europe and Asia being separate continents too.

North and South America are on separate plates and are joined by only a narrow land mass. Africa is also only joined to eurasia by a narrow land mass and is on a different plate. Hence why it's also separate. By your convention, Eurafricasia would all be one yielding 4.

I've only been to good ole NA, but I hope to go to Europe some day.

The definition of a continent is somewhat nebulous. It's like the definition of a planet.

And if you address the issue of the Panama Canal... they aren't connected.

I have 3 including the one I live on. Antarctica is the tough one, but it might be neat. Can tourists even go there or do you have to be doing research?

Yes you can go to Antarctica. Most people do it via a cruise but there are some very expensive land options as well.

I'm going for three weeks Feb. and March 2019. The experience varies greatly depending on who you go with. Big cruise lines like Celebrity just sail by... you never set foot on the continent. I am going with a smaller ship (95 people max) that will take zodiacs each day and walk around on the continent. We fly down from Chile, board the ship in Antarctica, and then sail around down there and then sail back to Argentina at the end. There will be researchers aboard, but the general public is allowed to book rooms too. The price is WILDLY more if you want to set foot on the continent compared to just sailing by.

As of right now I've only done North America (but quite a lot of it, including much of Central America). After that trip I will add South America and Antarctica.

I have a friend that has not only been to every continent, but has run a marathon on every one, including Antarctica!

While yes, Asia & Europe are technically one land mass, it is not incorrect at all to refer to them as separate continents.

There is also the problem that is Australia and Oceania... We have a mesh of Australia on it's own, Australasia and Oceania. I've head every conceivable mixture used by various different Geography professors. I'd personally like to include Oceania and either Australia or Australasia.

Asia - check
Africa - check
North America - check
South America - check
Europe - check

Guess I've got to start planning my trips to Australia & Antarctica.

I will have to use my miles and cash it in for a business or first class ticket to Australia. No chance am flying there in coach, can't do it.

It's not too bad! I've done the flight between Melbourne and LA in economy 4 times and all it really entails is sitting and watching movies for 15 hours! Although I do fork out the bit extra for the extra legroom and yes, it was infinitely nicer when I flew from Honolulu to Melbourne in Business (albeit Jetstar, which is more like a domestic Business). Flying via Hawaii is a really nice way to break up the flight too, and I've heard immigration in Honolulu is much nicer than at LAX!

I've done 4 continents - Australia, North America, Europe (although only the UK so not on the mainland continent) and Asia. I've got a few family members who've done 6 but I don't think I know anyone who's been to Antarctica yet.

I've been to North America, Europe, and Africa. I'd love to go to Australia, Antarctica, South America, and Asia... maybe some day!

SA shouldn't be too hard. Just don't know if I can withstand the plane ride to Asia or Australia.

I see lots of business class sales from US to Asia, at least a couple times a year. If you ever decide to go, I'd look for those.

This is SO interesting! I just heard a radio interview yesterday with the only Canadian on record to have ever done it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_Continents_Club
It goes from exquisite to sublime when you realize they do all 7 in 7 days.

I can hardly find the energy to watch 7 TV marathons in 7 days...

By the way my friend isn't on that list, but I'm guessing it's because she didn't run that official Antarctic Ice Marathon. She and her husband worked on a base there together a LONG time ago, possibly before they started that official race in 2006.

I've got friends who have done marathons on all seven continents as well and are also not on the list. Not sure if it because they didn't do the official Antarctic marathon or because they didn't apply to be officially part of the "club".
