Going through seperation what to do with dvc??

Hi Not sure if i am posting this in the right spot or not but anyways i need some advice. My husband and I are possibly seperating and we just bought into DVC. What are my options as far as to get rid of the dvc? I can not afford to have this on my own. Can you sell back to DVC? If so how do you go about it? Thanks so much for your help!

I'm very sorry to hear about your situation.

When you say you just bought into DVC, are you within your period (I think it is 30 days) in which you can cancel? If so, call your guide as soon as possible. I'd call your guide in any case to see if something can be done.

Another option is selling via resale. There are a number of companies which specialize in DVC resale. The sponsor of these boards is one which I have used for purchase.

I believe DVC may buy back your contract but for pennies on the dollar. Your best bet is to list the points with The Timeshare Store TTS. In the meantime rent the existing points to at least cover the due and some of the payments if you financed. Hope all works out for you....keep your chin up.

thanks so much for the advice I'll for sure be calling my guide. We purchasd the 160 point contract back in My and just added a 50 point contract on Dec 26 for blt. I never anticipated for this situation to come up so now trying to figure out what to do with it!

I would check out the exact cancellation language in your DVC contract for the cancellation time period. As a person who once cancelled a DVC contract, I know that it has to be done in writing and sent to DVC as specified in the contract. A phone call is not enough to cancel. Check your BLT contract ASAP to see if you are within the cancellation time frame.

Not sure if financially this is an option or if you even want to but you could just sell the master and keep the BLT add on.

However, unless you both agree to do whatever I think right now your hands are probably tied.

could you and your husband afford to pay it off together? it might be a nice thing to keep so you each could use it every other year (I assume you have kids?)

The cancellation period is 10 days. I know this for a fact because we just bought in last month and I asked that specifically.

Is it amicable? I like the idea of getting it every other year...

No we do not have kids so it really doesn't matter in that sense. We could pay it off together but not sure if that is something I want to do. When selling back to DVC how close to the amount that you paid for it do they give you? Thanks again for all your advice. It really helps!

Call the resalers such as Timeshare Store (this board's sponsor). You can see what the resorts are going for when you check this site's DVC resale listings. I believe that the reseller also takes a percentage off (10 percent???) that as well. Contracts that have available points are generally worth more. A BLT contract for 50 points should go for a nice amount, as Disney will increase the minimum add on to 100 pts this month.

Call and ask both Disney and a couple of resellers. Compare the info you get. Find out what fees you are responsible for.

Sorry about your marital problems - must be very sudden if you just bought an add-on. Seems like you just want to be rid of the DVC ASAP and be done with it, and so your best bet is probably to sell it through a reseller (contact the Timeshare Store via the link at the top of the page). You'll get much more back than if you just went to Disney.

This is for the contract from May - for the new add-on, just have it cancelled.

If you don't have kids than I agree that your best bet is #1 to see if DVC will cancel the add on (even though you might be past the cancellation they may take heart and let you off the hook for that) and #2 contact one of the Disney timeshare resellers and see about selling the original contract.

DVC only buys "selected" resorts. So if you own SSR for example, they probably aren't taking it. BCV, BWV maybe, but they pay about 50% of the current price!

I've heard that DIsney purchases most resorts for $55/pt.

You can probably get more through resale. If you are looking for a quick sale, set the price a few dollars below the going rate. Disney may ROFR the contract, but you shouldn't care.

TSS can probably tell you what a good price would be to GET RID of the contracts.

When we were there in December, we specifically asked our guide about the resale issue so that we knew the facts just in case one of us lost our jobs. we were told that Disney only takes 10% off the purchase price so that the most we would lose if we decided it was not for us or had to sell was10%.

Definitely call DVC and ask. For you, I certainly hope my guide was not being dishonest with me. (We ended up purchasing on the resale market because it was cheaper than purchasing from Disney directly.)

that's good to know! I am going to talk it over with him later tonight and see if we can come to a decision with it. It breaks my heart to sell my dvc but i just can't make it work on my own. So I hope in the future that i'll be able to repurchase.

I've never heard anything such as this. There were some messages a while back that people were selling directly to Disney, but for something in the $55 a point range. If you reduce the price of your pointson a resale to what Disney is buying up, you will get a sale quickly and Disney will buy the points for ROFR. However, you will still have to pay the reseller 10-15% commission.

Disney doesn't usually buy back points directly. Only through ROFR or at the bargain basement price.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I have been through this. We had one original contract and three other small add-ons. We decided to sell all the add-on contracts (about half our total points) and my ex deeded over the original contract to me. We sold our contracts through the Timeshare Store and they were very good.

Whatever you decide to do, you must be in agreement because documents need to be signed, notorized, etc. Best of luck to you!!
