Anyone gone or going solo and use the Dining Plan?
Just wondering if it'll be worth the expense.

Would appreciate any input out there! Thanks!
And pixiedust to you all!

Thanks for the pixie dust!

I will be going for two days solo before my sisters join me for my upcoming trip.

I will be using the Dining Plan. I used it on my last trip and did not have one problem. For the price of $40 a day it was totally worth it!

Keep the magic! :tinker:

Ill be using the dining plan when i go in may. Im interested to what others opinions were while going solo.

Thanks for the pixie dust! Heres so back for you! :wizard:

How can you book the package as a solo and save money? I've always been under the impression that package prices are based on *Double* Adult Occupancy, and therefore it's cheaper to book Room-only and buy park tickets separately.

A package consists of several parts - room, tickets and optional items such as the dining package. The price is show as per person, double occupancy.

Basically they are showing the cost per person for the tickets, meal plan and half the room.

If you are going solo you are paying for the full room, and tickets for one. On a package nothing is discounted (except tickets if you buy five days or more).

Basically the OP was asking the question of "is the additional price that I will pay for the meal package for myself worth it?"

I went solo and used the dining plan a couple of months ago. We're DVC members, so I paid about $38/night for the the dining plan, which was $190 for my stay. If I'd paid cash for all the food, it would have been $325+tips. Unlike alot of people, it didn't seem like too much food for me-maybe I have a big appetite! I left very little food uneaten. On the other hand, I only bought 1 snack and a couple alcoholic beverages in addition, so very little OOP. I'd be happy to answer any questions, EXCEPT don't ask how much weight I gained!

Thanks for your responses! Like you, Simba's Mom, I'm a DVC owner.
Lodging is covered & I bought a 10 day non-expiring park hopper ticket a while ago.

I'm leaning towards doing the Dining Plan after looking at the restaurant menus online. Seems like I will be able to eat decent meals (not always fried foods) at tried and true places as well as other at restaurants the Dh and DS would NOT want to go to!!!

The kind folks at DVC Member Services said I can add the Dining Plan up until the day of arrival.

Yee-haw & pixiedust to all!

Yes its great for Solos! I went at Halloween, and i ended up saving about $50 bucks, its worth of it for me! :)

Just as an example, i went to Le Cellier, and with the tip it was $47, i paid i think $34 a day for the dining plan.... well worth it!

Question: What I really want to know is, when you go solo, do you all eat in sit-down restaurants too? Is it weird? There is a chance that I may have to go solo next year. I was not going to get the meal plan because I thought the sit-down meals would be wasted.

So please let me know! Thanks!

Hi, Glendamax. Boy, do I understand your question! I was one who thought it was "weird" to dine alone at restaurants for about my first 3 solo trips. But I kept thinking, I SHOULD be comfortable about it, so I tried it on my next trip. Nope! Not for me, so I went back to all Counter-serve. Then I hit on am idea-I tried bringing a little spiral notebook (about 69 cents) and writing down my thoughts, what rides I've been on, experiences, what I've eaten, how it was, reviews, etc. Then when I get home, I put it away with all my souveniers from my trip. Months, years later, it's great to go back and read it. Oh, yeah-just don't forget to bring a pen! On my first solo trip with the notebook, I forgot a pen and when I asked the server for a pen, it took him forever to find me an extra pen. And now, it's kind of fun to make the "buying and packing of the notebook" such an integral part of planning my solo trips. And now I'm addicted to sudoku puzzles, so that makes me actually want to dine solo!
Another thing I've recently discovered (wish I'd thought of this sooner) is that if you let them know when you check in that you're solo and would like a nice view (I tell them, "Since I don't have a dining companion across the table to have sparkling conversation), they'll make sure you'll get a nice view in the restaurant. Last time I got window seats at Chefs de France and California Grill, next to the tank at Coral Reef, and near the show kitchen at Spoodles; and although I haven't gotten the outdoor patio at Rose & Crown, they gave me the nice backroom, next to the window. Actually, that worked out well, because it got windy and rainy during the meal (thanks to Katrina) and everyone who'd been outside came running in!

I had a job for almost 13 years where I averaged 106 work days a year of travel. And mostly in six to eight week blocks. I always have something to read with me. If I were to stick with CS meals only I would never be able to have decent food.

It's funny you should mention the small notebook and pen. I have a small
notepad and pen in my "Mary Poppins waist pack" (which converts to shoulder
bag - thank you Eagle Creek!) at all times.

When I wasn't lazy about doing trip reports, I have found time to write in
my notepad during meals. The interesting thing is that my service at
table service meals seemed better when I was scribbling away. Perhaps
the servers were thinking I was doing a review of the restaurant or
something. :thumbsup2

It also gives you something to do. I've also taken paperbacks with me.
When I'm at resort restaurants, I tend not to take a book, just the notepad
and camera. ;)

Thanks for your responses! If I do go alone, I'll make sure to let them know so I'll get a great view, and take a notebook! Thanks again!

Hi all,
Just back...I still *love* the dining plan! Because there were lots of other disboards singles there at the same time, only about half of my sit-down meals were solo, but I did get my dessert "to go" twice and had it for a snack later (doesn't work if you want ice cream for dessert, of course), and used my last counter service to grab a sandwich, etc, from the Boardwalk Bakery (nicely packed to go) to eat at the airport.

I find that I eat more healty food (salads and veggies) using the dining plan. Before that I'd grab fast stuff when I got hungry and that often ended up being unhealthy choices like chicken fingers...

Also, *if* you use those table service credits, they frequently cover the cost of the day's dining plan on their own!

Your actual mileage may vary.

Glad to hear this - if I have to go alone, I will try to hook up with other DISers for meals! Thanks! :thumbsup2

I contemplated getting the dining plan for my solo trip but I decided it wasn't for me. I am not that into Table Service so those credits will be wasted on me. I am going for 8 days and have only 3 TS meals planned - the rest will be counter service or quick snacks from carts. I think I like it better this way because it makes my commando touring a little easier. I can eat when I'm hungry and not when my ADR tells me I have to eat!

I did use the dining plan back in 2003 but I got it through a package and you could use the meals anytime anywhere and it included breakfast, I'd rather go back to that plan!

Since the last time I posted, I suddenly planned a solo trip in 12 more days (1/8-1/13). I really wanted to be spontaneous and so I thought alot about whether or not to do the dining plan, since I didn't know about getting table serve on the spur of the moment. Finally I decided I couldn't eat for less than $40/day, so I signed up for it. I expect it to go well again.

Congrats on your trip! I was trying to see if I could sqeeze one in so I could see the Christmas decorations, but I don't see it happening! Hope you have a great time!!!

I used the dining plan when I was solo during my recent trip home. It was great. I did my TS meal for dinner, and got my dessert to go, which I would then enjoy the next morning for breakfast with coffee in my room. I figure I saved about $25 a day by using the dining plan, if not more on some days.

As far as sitting alone, I didn't have a problem with that as well. I would review the digital photos I had taken that day, or on occasion chat with the people at the table next to mine.

I did share a TS meal with a fellow Dis'er, who was also on the plan, and it made paying for the meal very easy, because we both gave our cards to the CM who processed our meals.

I did the free dining plan for 15 days last september, and am doing it again this coming september for 21 days. It has never bothered me being at a ts resteraunt alone, so I used that for dinner the cs for lunch and the snacks for breakfast. Apart from my super healthy large milkshake and sundae at Ghirardelli's.

:lmao: :goodvibes :dance3: :cloud9:
