Going rates for tutors?

Does anyone here have a tutor for their child? My son needs a Spanish tutor and I have a friend who speaks fluent Spanish and is willing to tutor him. She is offering to do it for free, but I would like to compensate her. Does anyone know what the going rates are for tutors? Hourly rates?

I pay $50 an hour for my tutor. She is wonderful and worth every penny.

I think it all depends on where you are.
Where I live (Los Angeles suburb) a family I babysit for pays $75/hour.
One of my friends at UCLA tutors in westwood, ca and gets $175/hour
My cousin tutors kids from the shcool she teaches at in Brooklyn and she gets $120/hour

$50 an hour, but we usually just do 30 minute increments @ $25. Some tutors charge a little more for the half hour like $30. I am lucky that mine doesn't, but I do have to drive my child to the tutor. In home tutors are usually paid more, because they have to drive to you.

There is a difference between speaking and writing. A lot of people I know who are fluent are not "book taught" if that makes sense. They need to know how to conjuct those verbs correctly. Sometimes spoken is more slang and not "book stuff". Much like english, you have to have the "proper grammar" and all that jazz.

Is this person a teacher? How old is your son and what level do you need?

Here is what I would do. Do a trial run for free to see if it works out first. If after a couple of weeks your son is doing great and it is working out then settle on a price.

I have paid about 40-45 bucks and hour for HS math tutors for my dd and they were HS teachers.

This friend is a teacher, but not in Spanish. She teaches kindergarten. However she is fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese. That's why I thought she could help. My son is 15 and entering high school Spanish II this year. He barely passed the first course last year. I had contacted the school about a tutor last year and they have a program where the seniors tutor the younger students. It helped a little bit, but I'd rather him have an adult private tutor. I just wasn't sure where to find one. His school had no referrals. That's why I thought of asking this friend.
