This will be our first trip to WDW in January and from reading the boards I know we should pack cold weather items just in case.

I'd love to get suggestions on the best items to get. Since we live in Hawaii, we don't own things much warmer than a sweatshirt. Right now the big chains like Gap, Old Navy, etc are putting winter stuff on sale so I'd like to pick stuff up before you can't find it here.

I know I should get gloves, hat, etc. but what type...cotton, fleece, etc.
Will I need a really heavy jacket? Is fleece the best?

I have an 8, 7, and 1 year old. Thanks for any suggestions!

Hmmm-we've been the past two Jan/Feb and we have been fine with just jeans and hoodies. But, we are also from Mass, and what's cold to Floridians (and Hawaiians I would imagine) is just about perfect for us.

I would skip the heavy heavy jackets and rely on layering. Tshirt, long sleeve, turtle neck, and hoodie or fleece. That way you can add/remove as you need to. Plus you could totally luck out and have weather in the 60s or 70s.

Good Luck! It's a great time to visit, very low crowds, and the waits are virtually non-existant.

Well, going from Hawaii to Florida in January and going from Chicago to FLorida in January are totally different!! (I lived on Oahu for three years in the mid 1980s and had my oldest child there!!). Coming from Chicago during that time of year we only take sweatshirts and those cotton stretchy gloves. We wear our lightest coats to the airport and shove them in our suitcase and don't really use them again. But coming from Hawaii it could be a real shock to your body!! Think Layers... long sleeve shirts, sweaters, light jackets, gloves.

Have fun & Aloha...

Thanks for the replies. I think layering will be our plan. I'm mostly concerned about my 1 year old DD. She doesn't like extra stuff ( like jackets, etc) on her and I can't imagine her keeping gloves or a hat on.

For us, 75 - 70 is cool and anything in the 60's is downright cold! :)

If your little one will not usually keep a hat on...let her pick one out at the parks and maybe a "character" can try to get her to wear it if needed. Maybe mommy can't get her to wear it but I'll bet Cinderella or Mickey can!!

Have a blast!!!

Great idea Donna!...hopefully this trip she won't be afraid of the characters like she was when she was 6 months old :)

you probably won't need gloves or hats....if it's really that cold, stay inside the exhibits. we are going in jan also & we will bring a coat but not a heavy ski/down coat...more like a bommer/varsity jackets for the kids....layering is great...hoddings (gap/old navy) are really your best bets....it's cold early in the am & at night for the fire works unless it rains.
have fun.
