God forbid, but just in case...

How wonderful it will be if and when we see the clip art on a DIS signature that we can say a short prayer specifically for THAT family.

what a nice thing to do, when I see the clipart in a siggie I also say a quick prayer for the family and service man or woman.

Thanks! My brother and his wife are in Saudi so this is for both of them..............

JC thanks for making the flags. Their use in WWII was so that the community would know which families had someone serving. Here in our online community it is nice to see the same thing. I like the idea of saying a short prayer whenenver I see on in a post direct to that person and their loved ones.

God Bless the USA!

Thank you for explaining about the flags and posting this thread. My DH has been serving his country proudly for over 18 years and with these uncertain times it is nice to know people care.

What a nice thing to do for the community JC.

These flags are a great reminder of the sacrificies many are enduring to protect our freedoms.

you would cover the top blue star with a gold one.

I think I just learned what a "Gold Star Mother" is. :(

I never knew about these flags or the tradition of changing the star to gold.

God Bless all who serve.

Thank you for sharing the significance of these stars. I did not know what they stood for.

Bless our troops and their families.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

That is exactly where the term comes from.

During the wars, it helped for the neighbors in the community to know exactly what the situation for that family was. It allowed them to give immediate condolances if a gold star was displayed or food and or services if they seemed like they needed it and their family was serving.

A good example was used in the movie "Saving Private Ryan" where the mother had one in her window.

It's possible that you can get them from your local "American Legion" or if you happen to have a local chapter of "Blue Star Mothers" or "Gold Star Mothers", they always have them if you do not wish to make your own.

Thank you so much JC. I've been very emotional since DB shipped out earlier this month. Some time back Mama gave me a pin that Great-Grandma wore when Grandaddy was serving in WWII. It is once again being worn proudly. And now your clipart will be in my signature. Thank you again. This means alot.

Thanks for bringing these back. My mother said during WW11 it was common to see many with 2-3 stars on them in windows. We still have a small group of Gold Star mothers that are in our Memorial Day parade.

Thanks Mr. J. As of right now we have 1 left in the forces - unless I hear otherwise as one was suppose to retire last month and we have not heard that it was official yet. Hoping it was. Ooops..after I posted I remembered I have a cousin in the National Guard Reserves...he counts too. Off to change my flag. Thanks again!

Thanks J.Cricket! I have been looking for something like this to add to my sig. I certainly appreciate it!

I have one in my window at home. We were also told to put a light under it - to signify that our soldier can find his way home. So mine has a Christmas candle sitting on the window sill and the flag hanging in the window.

I'm off to try and figure out how to add this to my signature.

THANKS to whoever added my flag!!! Was it you Mr. JC??;)

Yeah.

Does the one you have at home have a guilded rope/string with tassles that is used to hang it. Some do and some don't. I was just wondering.
