Goal weight or goal size?

Okay, gang, I know my goal is a long way off but I like to think about it from time to time to help keep me motivated. I am trying to decide if I want to go for a "number on the scale" or a particular size. If I go for a number on the scale I would go for between 135-140 pounds. If I go for a size, I would like to be an 8 or a 10.

What about you? Do you see yourself at a goal weight or envision stopping when you get to a certain size? Inquiring minds wanna know!

My weight goal is 185, but on my frame, I am afraid that 185 may make me look like a stick. I think, once I get around 190-200, I will re-evaluate how I look and feel and go from there.

Holy cow Lisa! Are you sure you're not me?

I'm going for 130 to 135 (125 in my dreams). That will get me to 8 or 10 range. I really just want my size 10s to fit a little loose again.

My goal weight is 110lbs. I am wearing a size 10 now and I have another 31lbs to lose, so I figure I'll end up wearing a size 4, but at this point it is a bit hard to tell!

I used to think it was a size, but I have reached that size, however, I don't think today's size 12 is the same as a size 12 in 1986. With that said, it is all about getting into the "normal" range for BMI for me and that would be at 151 pounds, which is 7.8 pounds away for me. However, for some reason my goal, the one that I have been striving for is 148, with 145 being where I would ultimately like to be. So if I haven't confused you yet, I have 11.8 pounds to go until I reach my WISH goal and 14.8 pounds until I reach my personal goal. I am assuming this would put me into a tight 8 and comfortable 10 since I am in a 12 now.

But sometimes I wonder if anything will be a stopping point. When I weighed over 200 pounds I used to dream of being 175, I used to think 175 would be great and I could stay there. However, once I reached 175 I wanted more. Then I thought 160 would be good, but when I reached there I wanted more. So I don't know if I will stop, I would like to think I will, but I wonder if I will ever be totally satisfied. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with where I am at, but I still see the problem areas and still want to lose more.

the "goal" debate

I think "goal" is a mindset and one I personally fear.

I aim for 135, comfortable size 8 for me, and maintain +/- 2 lbs either way. I have gotten really close, even hit it, but never stay there. In my mind I want to maintain that weight range for a month before claiming my red clippie. I don't know if I'll ever be ready mentally to put that red clippie in my signature. I'm too afraid I'll think of it as a license to ease up and then I'll not maintain. I have gained and lost the last 7 lbs to get there for about 5 months now.

Whatever you decide, weight or size, remember to consider your build, age and muscle mass. I just want to get to a point where food doesn't monopolize my thoughts and indulges don't set me downspiraling

I have both, too: Goal Weight 135 and Goal Size 8

10 pounds down!
Sigh, 50 more to go.

My goal is to be in between 140-145, which is suppose to be my "ideal" weight according to my MD. I just want to be a size 10 and not look in the mirror and cringe. ;) I'm 10 lbs away from 145 so I'm kind of happy. It is just taking F-O-R-E-V-E-R!

Last summer my goal weight was 130
I went further than that by last Nov - about 121
Recently I bought my 1st size 8 EVER
Friends had been telling me size 10 was too baggy but I couldnt believe them since that was a new size to me

Goal size---12
Goal weight---180

My 16 jeans are getting a little lose so I may already be in a size 14, but I haven't tried any on yet. I'm waiting til I hit 190 and see where I stand. I did try on my wedding dress about 2 months ago and it fit perfectly....A SIZE 14! So hey, I guess a 10 may be in my future, but I don't know. I haven't been a 10 in a looooooooong time, but we'll see. I'll be perfectly happy in a 12! :Pinkbounc  :bounce:

I'm undecided on this one. I think I'd like to reach 159 as a goal weight, but it seems arbitrary to me. I guess it is more of a size issue for me. I would like to be a comfortable 10.

My first goal was 145, after losing my first 25, my DH asked me not to go that low. So I changed to 150. After being stalled for 4 months, I have changed it to 155. I came to this realization from my shopping. I wear a medium top, sometimes large. Pants, I have 8's and 10's, depending on where they came from. I am struggling with ending at 155. I feel I look better at 159 now than I did the last time I weighed 159. Its weird, and it plays mind games with you......I am working on that whole mind game!!

Good question, good thread. Helpful to read everyone else's thoughts, too.

I guess I was just focused on a weight since, I have no idea what size that weight will put me in. :o It's been 17 years since I last weighed my 'goal' weight and, I think I was wearing a 10 but, I'm not sure. :o I think I only owned and bought myself One pair of size 8 jeans, ever. I didn't wear those long.

And, of course, I have two weight goals: My desired, will-be-happy-with weight AND, what I think would be an ideal weight, altho probably VERY HARD to obtain, given my age. :( But, I'm 1/2 way to my first weight goal! :sunny:

Beastlover - If you've exercised to get back to 159, that makes all of the difference. Muscle does weigh more than fat. So, you can look thinner, but be at the same weight. That's why a lot of places track pounds and inches now.

If you're wearing the sizes you want and you're happy with yourself, sounds like you hit your goal to me.

Good Job!

What an interesting topic. We must be shaped so differently to be at such similar weights and such differing sizes! I'm currently at 143 lbs, I'd like to be at 130, but I'm so apple-shaped that I'm in size eight clothes at this weight - and when not an eight, a six. I only need a ten when the waist is very cinched.

I would like to weigh about 145, which is good for me. I feel very confortable at this weight and I feel that I could maintain it better than going lower. The problem is that, at this weight, I am not really a 10 but most 12s are too loose. So I have a jeans (mostly) problem at this weight. But I will be happy to be back at 145!!! 10 down, 10 to go!!

Goal weight is 124, goal size is a 6. I'm at 128 now, down 29 pounds and in a size 8. It's been almost a year since I've lost any more weight though, just maintaining takes everything I have.

My goal size is a 10...
My goal weight is between 150-155.

The whole famly did a big weight loss push together in 2000. I drop almost 70 lbs and my low was 152. I felt great and really miss wearing the great clothes I bought at that time.
I kept it off until spring 2002 when we started planning to start a family and with the pregnancy I endulged and gained more than I needed to. Now I have about 50 lbs to lose now to get back to my goal.

I get on the scale more often than I try on my size 10 jeans to track my progress. I know my body has changed shape and me at 152 might not fit those size 10s tlike before.
I really think you have to go off what feels comfortable when you are there. I was shooting for 145 the first time around, but when I hit 152 it felt like the right place to be. I think shooting for a weight range can be a good idea.

I used the weight-in relation-to-height&frame chart to aim towards a goal of 150 lbs., a 75 lb. loss for me. After following my new WOE for over a year, my body just seemed to "settle" at 160. I just felt comfortable there. Because I exercise almost everyday, I was happily wearing a size 12 even though I hadn't beeen size 12 at 160 before. I went back to the charts & saw that 159 is the highest healthy weight for a large frame (which I am) at my height. I started to think my body was telling me something. I've stayed at ~160 (up or down 1 lb.) for close to a year. I still eat carefully, but for the first time, in a long time, I feel in control of my weight.
I am a FIRMie (Hello to fellow FIRMie, ZerasPride). From the FIRM thread (on the WISH bd.) I learned about the different types of exercise programs. I was emphasizing sculpting workouts, rather than cardio & aerobics. This seemed to explain why my body looks pretty good at 160, but I am not losing weight. So I just added some cardio & aerobic workouts. I have lost 1 1/2 lbs. since then. I may have just motivated myself to drop a few more lbs. & 150 may end up being my ultimate goal, after all. SGG
