Gluttoberfest: Food and Wine 2009 - Updated 12/24 (Review is complete!)

Great start and glad to see you enjoyed a number of the seafood items from the F&WF kiosks ... my DW doesn't eat beef or pork so glad to see she won't go hungry :thumbsup2

I'm sure you'll discover that there are plenty of non-beef/pork dishes when you're there....right now!

Oh yummy! Your pics turned out great!

Looking forward to more :goodvibes

Plenty more pics coming up. Stay tuned.

My oh my, BriarRosie -

# A. LOVE IT that you had a food "theme" for the day
# B. LOVE IT that desserts are ALWAYS WELCOME!
# C. LOVE your drink choices. (So much, in fact, my co-workers had to stop me from attempted screen lickage.)

More! More! Clamoring for more!

Mrs. Spratt

The salt on the glass rims are much better to lick than the monitor!
My theme will move from sea to land very soon. ;)

Man that sushi looks good!

You know, I thought the sushi at California Grill and Wolfgang Puck Cafe sushi bar were better. This was decent sushi, but it wasn't as good as those places, IMHO. The prices were on par with those types of rolls served at the other locations.

Great review Lori, I can't believe how many things you sampled the first day :worship: Mom and I were sharing and we didn't try that many :lmao:

I know! I ate like a pig! But I did have 8 hours to consume all of that. ;)

Love it!!

popcorn::

Thanks, Ann!

OMG Lori, I want to lick the screen! I give your review a Gluttonous rating :dance3:

You ain't seen nothin' yet!

So many pictures. So much yummy! It's like you hit a quarter of the food booths on one day. I was able to get the shrimp ceviche when it was spicy and it was really good, so it's a shame the dumbed it down by the time you got your mouth on it.:sad2: Can't wait to read more!

Yeah, I expected it to be better. I thought the shrimp ceviche at the Ditch was better.

What a great first day Lori! I really enjoyed your reviews.

Thanks, Heather!

I was also at the La crema wine demo on Sunday. Too bad I didnt know what you looked like. Boy was it packed on Sunday, ugh!!!!

I was at the La Crema demo on Monday. ;) My red hair would have been a shining beacon.

There will be 5 new gluttons for next years Food and Wine Fest. we have our ressies for Oct 14-21st 2010. WOOT! We can hardly wait. No kids, No work, No stress. Heheheh! I can hardly wait! We hope they have the signatur dining serries still for Vic and Al's. We really wanna do that one. Does anyone have any feed back from that experience so far?

The signature dining event for V&A is over $300 per person. I hadn't done that, but my friend who went last year enjoyed it. IMHO, you can't go wrong with Vicki and Al's place.

Thursday, October 15, 2009:

This morning started fairly light on the gluttony scale. I was meeting up with a DISer at the Beach Club Marketplace for breakfast. I did not take a photo of the Uncrustables peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I figured that was light enough not to interfere with the serious gluttony taking place for the rest of the day.

My DIS friend and I took a lap around Crescent Lake and said our goodbyes. She said she would think of me while she ate at Kouzzina, as I was doing the signature dining event at Flying Fish Cafe.

World Showcase wouldn't open for about another half hour after I got into Epcot, and I was going to be meeting up with Brenda and Jay in France to start a new round of gluttony. As I passed the time walking around Future World, I regret not taking a photo of the Queen of Hearts hanging out near the fountain plaza, twirling around out of sheer boredom. It was a rare moment to see a character without visitors.

I ran into Brenda and Jason as we headed back towards World Showcase, and we did indeed start in France. Brenda said she would buy me my first slushie drink, but the permanent stand that sells the Grey Goose lemon or the Grand Marnier orange ones were not open. But the festival kiosks were. So we compromised by getting the "Parisien" cosmo slushie as my first one.

DSCN0112.jpg

Ok, I drank some of it. It was melting faster than I could drink it! But I thought it was like having a Kaki Gori. But made for adults. I would definitely get this again if available. It gets an Excellent.
MinstrelExcellent.jpg

I couldn't drink it without food, right? So I continued on with my evolutionary theme from sea to land. What creature could I eat to represent the first critters to crawl onto land from the primordial ooze? As if that description didn't sound appetizing enough, I'm sure it wouldn't matter that I mention the snails.

Yep, I had the Snail Poppers. Ok, Disney doesn't call them that, I do. Disney prefers the much fancier Escargot Persillade en Brioche.

DSCN0110.jpg

I popped the top on one of them to show what it looks like inside the cute li'l buttery brioche bread cups. The French people serve them covered, so you don't have to look at them. They are still snackable with butter and garlicky goodness. Excellent.
MinstrelExcellent.jpg

I have to mention one thing. You should be able to recharge your festival gift cards at any kiosk. I asked the French girl at this kiosk. She said she couldn't recharge my card. I think she probably could have done so if she was trained properly, because I was able to get it recharged at kiosks that were stationed by non-International Program cast members. :rolleyes1

Now that I got my snails, I could now do some land based critters. I didn't have to go far, because there was a short rib dish at France, too. Here's the Braised Short Ribs in Cabernet with Mashed Potatoes.

DSCN0111.jpg

Looks like mashed potatoes and no meat, but the meat was hiding under the tater pile. And they were good! I had Anton Ego Moment as I ate them. If you've seen "Ratatouille", you might recall the moment Anton Ego, the food critic, took a bite of the the titular dish created by Remy. And then you'll remember he had a flashback moment of himself as a young boy having that dish at home. I had that moment with the short rib meat, because it tasted a lot like the way my mother prepared brisket. Because this dish felt like a warm hug from home, I have no choice but to give it a Glutton rating. It would have been an Excellent rating otherwise.
MinstrelGlutton.jpg

We stopped into the wine store in Italy, and I had to get a limoncello because I hadn't had one before. They served it properly chilled, and the shot glass was also chilled.

DSCN0113.jpg

It tasted like Lemon Drop candy. Very much a Good rating.
MinstrelGood.jpg

On to Germany, where we all had the Judgement of Nuremberg sausages. Ok, they were really called Nuernberger Sausage on a Pretzel Roll, but we all had to be snarky about the name we wanted to call it.

DSCN0117.jpg

Bow chicka bow bow. Yes, this is what I call food porn. There are so many jokes I could make, but this is a family forum, so the jokes will just make themselves. In your minds. :rolleyes1 Oh, it was tasty, and everything you'd want in a sausage. Get the minds out of the gutter now! I'd give it a Good.
MinstrelGood.jpg

Grilled Lamb Chop with Red Wine Sauce and Murray River Sea Salt was up next from Australia.
DSCN0119.jpg

Yum! Tender and delicious. Gotta love a lamb lollipop. Good rating.
MinstrelGood.jpg

I have liked the Beef Empanada with Tomato Salsa in the past, when it was just the empanada without salsa.
DSCN0120.jpg

I thought the empanada was just ok when I ate it, but the addition of the salsa gave it a Good rating.
MinstrelGood.jpg

Brenda and Jason had a culinary demo to go to, so I headed to the Festival Center with them. I was going to hang out and have some cheese while they were at the demo. As we were walking from World Showcase past World Showcase Plaza, I was stopped by a survey cast member. You know. the ones who carry the electronic boards with stylus pens? She asked me if I had been enjoying the food and wine kiosks. She apparently didn't know who I was to even ask such a silly question. So I told her yes, I did eat at the kiosks, so she asked if I was willing to give my email address to give opinions on a survey about the festival.

You bet! Brenda was doing her best Arnold Horschack "ooh ooh! Mr. Kotter pick me!" impression. The survey taker acted like she did Brenda a favor by allowing her to also leave her email for the survey. I still think my red hair was a beacon for the survey taker. I always get picked.

Anyway, we headed to the festival center, where I found another friend going to the same demo. I said my goodbyes and had some cheese from the Wonders Bar. I found out that for about 50 cents more than the Mouse Catch kiosk, you still get the same cheeses, but some fruit as well. Piave from Italy, Mahon from Spain, and Dorothea from Holland.

DSCN0122.jpg

Not much to say about cheese, other than they were Excellent.
MinstrelExcellent.jpg

Brenda and Jay went back to the hotel for pool time, and I had decided to go to the Ditch for another margarita to try before I headed back. I decided on the Aguacate, which had some avocado in it.

DSCN0123.jpg

Wow! This was refreshing! The avocado was subtle, as I thought it tasted more like a basic margarita. But it was still fantastic. The avocado gives it an extra "oomph". Excellent.
MinstrelExcellent.jpg

I headed back to Beach Club Villas to get a bit of pool time and clean up for the Flying Fish Cafe signature dinner.

Hi lori!!!!! :goodvibes

Just got home a few hours ago (boooo!) and now I'm catching up on some fun stuff before heading to the grocery store and chaining myself to the washing machine.

Wanted to thank you again for the good times last week - Jay and I had a ton of fun and were glad you were there to share it with us. :thumbsup2

Looking forward to your FF dinner review ... :cloud9:

PS. The wine glass made it home in perfect condition!

I want one of those avocado margaritas right now.

Snail poppers :lmao: Love the name, but sorry can't make myself eat them

Sounds like a fun day so far :goodvibes What's next?

I'm going to have one of those Parisien cosmo slushies next year!:yay: But I think I'll have to pass on the snail poppers  and as for the sausage

I'm also looking forward to the FF dinner review. :)

Since I am newbie can someone answer a couple of questions for me?
#1. We are getting the deluxe dining plan for next years F&W. How does that work with the kiosks around the world. I see that the DDP is taken but what are we allowed to get.
#2. Do we only use the snack credits or how does it work?
#3. How do those F&W gift cards work? Price of them? Any restricted items on those cards?
#4. I am thinking of using our DxDP plus a gift card for drinks and other extras at the kiosks. Is that smart or not? I know I will want some of those WONDERFUL looking yummy drinks in the pics.

Thanks for the help.

Lori, your reviews are amazing and I wish I was there grazing the F&W booths right now!

I can totally picture Bren doing the "Ooh, Ooh ooh PICK me"

Of course she will have wine in one hand and a cocktail in the other but still...pretty good mental picture of it :lmao:

I'm surprised the censors even let you post that sausage pic!:lmao: Everything looked delicious, although my first thought when seeing the short rib dish was that it reminded me of cat food straight out of the can!

#1 Snack credits only at the kiosks. You can get any food item or non-alcoholic beverage. This year on the first weekend they were exempting only the Tuna Sensation in Japan. Last weekend that wasn't exempted anymore.

#2 Just the snack credits. They don't take CS credits. And your TS credits cannot be used for booking special festival events or the Party for the Senses.

#3 It's just a regular old Disney gift card dressed up. You can use it any way you would use a regular Disney gift card.

#4 Personally I wouldn't use a dining plan at all so I am not qualified to answer that one. I don't know why it wouldn't work since you can't get alcoholic beverages with DDP credits (unless you're at Hoop de Doo or that other thing, you know, the Hawaiian thing). I'd just use cash myself, I was never sold on the gift cards.

The family is looking at me funny...I am just laughing as I look at that sausage pic and read the caption...

:rotfl2:

Okay thanks for the wonderful reply. It is ever so helpful in the planning. Man does it shed a new light on things though. I may have meal options left when I leave. :) :rotfl: I guess we won't be hungry just broke! :rotfl:

Back to the tenative itinerary :lmao::cheer2:

I'm relieved that the glass made it home safely. Now the question is, will it remain safe at home? And do let me know if you try the drink recipe on it. ;)

I had a blast doing a very non-traditional trip for me. I am surprised that the only non-Epcot thing I did was a ride on the Haunted Mansion! :rotfl2:
Wish I had a piece of your birthday cake right about now. :cloud9:

I want one of those avocado margaritas right now.

I wish I had one of those right about now, too! Not sure if it would go well with the cake I just told Brenda I want. ;)

Snail poppers :lmao: Love the name, but sorry can't make myself eat them

Sounds like a fun day so far :goodvibes What's next?

Yes, I know that Snail Poppers aren't for everyone. More for me!
Next is the Flying Fish Cafe signature dinner event.

I'm going to have one of those Parisien cosmo slushies next year!:yay: But I think I'll have to pass on the snail poppers  and as for the sausage

It's difficult to say whether Disney will repeat things from year to year. I hope they bring back the Cosmo slushie, or make it a permanent choice at the slushie kiosk.

I see that Catherine answered your questions while I was out last night seeing a stage productions of "Hairspray". :goodvibes

My take on it: While you can use snack credits on the food (or non-alcohol) items at the kiosks, I think that it's very easy to get full on the food. I don't know how you plan on using the deluxe meal credits, but it seems like too much food, IMHO. I don't do the DDP for that reason mostly. If you pace yourself on the snacks, maybe that would work.

The festival gift cards can be loaded with amounts from $5 to $1500, just like any other gift cards sold. The only reason I liked my gift card was accessibility while doing kiosks. I wore the band around my wrist while grazing. I loaded my card in $50 increments because I knew I would be using up the money. I did end up with $3 left on the card, but I know I'll be coming back in December to use it. I would suggest to most people to use the balance before leaving.

I can totally picture Bren doing the "Ooh, Ooh ooh PICK me"

Of course she will have wine in one hand and a cocktail in the other but still...pretty good mental picture of it :lmao:

I wish I was still grazing the booths. I missed quite a few items. ;)
And no, Brenda did not have any beverages in her hand when she volunteered herself for the survey.

I'm surprised the censors even let you post that sausage pic!:lmao: Everything looked delicious, although my first thought when seeing the short rib dish was that it reminded me of cat food straight out of the can!

Hmm, maybe I should have pixelated the photo! That would have been appropriate! :lmao: And yes, that was some tasty cat food. ;)

The family is looking at me funny...I am just laughing as I look at that sausage pic and read the caption...

:rotfl2:

I couldn't post the comments that Brenda, Jay and I made while eating it. I don't want to get banned. ;)

Great pica and reviews and I love the snail poppers. :lmao:

I'm getting hungry for those, too! I better go have lunch.

I can see that :rotfl:

Can't wait to hear about the FF signature meal

Yep it is a lot of food for sure using the DxDDP. But the couple we are going with and my hubby can really put away food. We can also have a few bfsts in room during our stay. That means less crouds to fight for restaurants. We will have 21 snack credits each for our entire stay and we will be using for 4 days of lunches so I think it is all good. We may end up with one or two meals left unused but that is okay. at least I know we will not be hungry or run out of money when we are in need of food. It is more of a piece of mind for us. we also plan to eat meal wooth Cindy one day that takes 2 TS options and a Fantasmic Brown Derby and a few other fancy placs while we are there since we will have no kiddos. Those will be 2 TS's also. So we may come out even in the end.

Lots of eating, drinkin and being merry. I think I will load my gift card up some to use for Alchoholic drinks, extra drinks if needed and for some shopping. I should be all set then with NO worries.

I hope the Beach Club Resort is all ready for us. Heheheh. I LOVE The BCR.

Mmmm. Land looks tasty.

Boy howdy, but you know how to have a good time, girly!
