Glee--anyone else not enjoying this?

I don't find any of the adult characters believable so it gets a big old "stupid show" from me.

I feel like yelling this so you guys will get it-it's a parody and it's not supposed to be 'believable', ya know? It's a comedy; it's mockery. The kids are talented but seriously....do ya think any cheer coach would send 3 girls in as 'spys?' Come on, do you really not get it?

I liked last night's episode. I have known a few cheer and dance coaches like Jane Lynch's character.

Why is it when people don't like a show like this, it means we "don't get it?"

Oh, I got it, I just didn't like it. If every show appealed to everyone, we wouldn't need such a variety.

I totally "get it" - it's not that deep, really. I understand what they were going for. I just think they failed...

Not with me. Deep? Anything but deep; I can't believe the word 'deep' even entered into this conversation. That's my point, this is a camp, wild and bizarre show on purpose. No 'deep', not even close.

I'm not looking for another Disney show...heaven forbid. But, I am looking for some decent writing and characters. Some of these characters are just plain annoying. The wife??? Please. Most men I know would have walked by now...trying to decide between a sunny nook and the grand foyer??? Please. On one salary?? And her sister??? Talk about giving women a bad name....can you imagine someone insisting their dh get a second job so they don't have to give up their craft space???
And the cheerleading coach? Yes, she's funny. But in a really sad way. She is just too over the top to be believable. And that's irritating to me.
I'm not a prude, I don't have an issue with the content per se. But, I just don't think it adds to the story..it seems somehow gratuitous to me. But for some reason, society today thinks that 'adult behaviour' and subsequent situations make something 'cutting edge'. I tend to disagree.
Can anyone imagine a bunch of nerdy students (and those glee kids are stereotypical nerdy) actually taking it upon themselves to change a routine that drastically??? I'm not saying it has to be real life but come on...that was a huge stretch. But then again, I didn't watch Melrose Place or 90210 either.

But that's what makes it funny! It's not supposed to be believeable or realistic. It's supposed to be over the top and stereotypical and FUN. I mean, most people watch TV to escape from reality.

I understand that it is supposed to be a parody. But it's almost as if they didn't go far enough. It just wasn't funny enough, it seemed to fall just short of something. They pulled out all the stereotypes, but they didn't really do anything new with them. I will watch next week though, because I'm hoping this second show was just a dud and things will get better.

Exactly. We all don't like the same shows, movies or books. If we did, life would be boring.

I didn't watch it, the subject matter didn't appeal to me. I was reading the thread to see if it might be worth watching. I think it's not for me, and if that means I 'don't get it', well I'm OK with that.

I think she was responding to the comment that the adult characters are not "believable" and as a result the show is stupid. The point is the characters are supposed to be over the top, not believeable.

I really like it so far - yes, the characters are stereotyped, but that's the WHOLE POINT. Everyone knew these people when they were in high school. How many of us knew a Rachel Berry of our own that we desperately wanted to throw a slushie in their face just once? Or how many of us knew the guidance counselor who was clearly in love with the hot Spanish teacher or the knew the evil cheerleading coach? How many of us WERE these people? That's what makes it so great - everyone knows these characters as people from their own lives - and let's face it, we all wanted to do the exact same things once in a while!

And no, it's not HSM - it was never intended to be squeaky-clean. When you get a storyline that involves characters from all walks of life and who all have different goals and desires, not everything is going to be solved perfectly at the end of every episode.

And I have to say, the writing is fantastic. So is the cast - they're all VERY talented young individuals who could go very far, even if Glee doesn't work out in the end.

Ok - I definitely liked the pilot better than last night's episode - but I still really liked last night's episode.

Can't wait to see it again next week!

I think Lea Michelle (Rachel Berry) has a great voice - I really like her versions of the songs we've heard so far.

And the teacher is really hot (which I did not think AT ALL until I watched him dance / sing the Kanye song)

I watched it last night because I have friends who were looking forward to it, so I thought, what the heck and tuned in.

I didn't care for it that much. I could watch it, but I just didn't care for it. I may try it again next week, because I can't accurately judge a show on one episode, but I have a feeling I won't be following it for too much longer.

I "get it" and normally LOVE! Jane Lynch, but I don't care much for the show. I will give it one more week, though.

I feel like I watched a different show than everyone else. I loved it as much as the pilot!

Me too. The "push it" scene had me rolling with laughter. I love it!:happytv: I think the cast is amazing and it's acted wonderfully.

sigh... I guess you just don't get it. ;)

Yeah I get it. There is parody and there is stupidity. This show falls firmly in the stupidity category for me.

Exactly. The butchy female coach has been done and done much better than on this show.

That's the way The Office is for me. Lots of people love it. I loathe it.

I don't mind Glee, however. While it has not earned "don't miss" status, it is Tivo-worthy. Honestly, it's one of those shows that is somewhat enjoyable, but will probably be cancelled.

I don't understand how these shows get the "can't miss" or "best new show" status before they even air??? :confused3

Exactly. I get it, plenty. I was just appalled at the various sexual situations and conversations. My DD is 16 and she knows about sex. But I don't think we need a show with teenage boys sitting around discussing their...longevity, nor do we need to watch booty-dancing with simulated sex acts. My DD is in a show choir, which is what drew us to "Glee" to begin with. But it was really just tooo, tooo...sumthin'. It would be better on HBO.
