Glasgow/Edinburgh hotel recommendations?

I am planning a weekend in either Edinburgh or Glasgow (haven't decided yet) for me and my mum and would like recommendations on nice, central (near the shops ) hotels please

I travel to London a lot with work, and am a member of Virgin's Traveller scheme, and one of the perks is free first class rail travel at weekends So, travel isn't a problem, but have no idea about hotels, as have only been for day trips to both cities.

Any help will be much appreciated

For Edinburgh I would recommend the Osbourne Hotel - www.osbournehotel.com,
and for Glasgow, Express By Holiday Inn, Theatreland - , www.hiexpressglasgow.co.uk
or Central Hotel - www.quality-hotel-glasgow.com,
which are all quite central. The Quality Hotel in Glasgow is actually in Central Railway Station. Any time we have booked this one, we have done it through www.activehotels.co.uk as it comes out cheaper. The other two, we just book through their own websites.

Obviously Edinburgh has the Castle, Holyrod and lots of other scenic things to see.

Glasgow has some fantastic shopping centres including Buchanan Galleries and Braehead. There is also the Botanic Gardens, the Glasgow Science Centre, the Burrell Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, Glasgow School of Art which was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. There are always some great shows on if you get a chance. This might not be your cup of tea but Glasgow also has the The Mitchell Library which is the largest reference library in Europe. You could also visit The Tall Ship. There are some fantastic restaurants and bars in The Merchant City. Plus there is The Transport Museum and also The People's Palace.

The last time we visited Edinburgh, we stayed at The Chester Residence. It's serviced apartments rather than a hotel, but it's within easy walking distance of everything, in a quiet residential area. The owners are friendly and accommodating and they stock the kitchen with breakfast items each day (Duchy's Originals bread, eggs, fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, cereal, milk, butter, teas and coffee). Of course, it does lack many of the facilities of a hotel. We wondered how we'd feel about not having a bar, but we were only there for a few days and there are plenty of bars in Edinburgh! I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

There isn't a bad review on Trip Advisor.

If you do choose Edinburgh then I would definitely recommend the Royal Mile, the Castle and Holyrood House. And I would make time to go and see the Royal Yacht Britannia, which is just outside of the city centre in Leith. I loved seeing this and imagining the Queen and all the Royals being on board, it was really interesting and even the kids loved it.

Whether you go to Edinburgh or Glasgow, if you can try and go to Stirling, which is about the same distance from either, and about 30 to 40 mins drive. The castle and the Wallace Monument are worth seeing.
