Giving up Cable/satellite do you miss it?

I will admit that I have tried and just can't do it. I changed companies last year and I gave up all the extras and just had the basics. We have had netflix for years and amazon prime for a couple of years and even then I wasn't happy.

Dh watches lots of sports when he is home, so that was one reason we keep the cable.

The kids are leaving home and I am home bound due to an accident I had last year, so that maybe one reason I still love my cable. Love my HBO and Showtime and I also like the shows on USA/CLOO during the daytime. Maybe once I am able to leave the house, I will be willing to give up my cable, but I just can't do it!

We gave it up about 6 mths before we moved out of IN. I got a single digital TV antenna for $40 and that was sufficient for watching free channels. Plus we have amazon prime and roku boxes so the kids found plenty to watch.

It saved us $70/mth to get rid of cable (kept Internet ) so I felt it was well worth it.

We stream Netflix and huluplus through the wii. I don't miss it at all. Sometimes it's annoying if the internet slows down, and I can't upload pictures to shutterfly while watching tv. But that's about it.

I'm so ready to do this! Our current bill for Direct TV is $143/month. I wanna save that! We have Netflix, but my DD(16) is concerned about her shows on ABCFamily, like Pretty Litttle Liars. How quickly can you watch these online?

Thought I would, but don't miss it at all! We have netflix and Prime and just got a Roku 3. The roku was more for ease of use of netflix but I love all the channels on it! We did just buy an inside antennae so we could watch the olympics. We talked about getting Hulu plus but haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't know why we didn't make the switch a long time ago!!

nope:thumbsup2 not a bit:) I bought a tivo with a lifetime sub. on ebay, hooked up an antenna, and couldn't be more pleased..... I really really like watching shows on my schedule, so the tivo box was a big deal for me....
we also have netflix....and I will never be able to watch all the shows and movies available with this setup at 8.00 per month.....:thumbsup2 I will prob. stop Netflix once we get warmer weather, but till then.....even with the tivo box(biggest cost) we still broke even pretty quickly....

we have prime also- I don't much like the choices for streaming...you either have to pay per episode or season, or it's a junky lineup in comparison to huluplus or netflix..... (I love the shipping tho)
my ds loves animal and food shows, and they have more of those on Amazon, so he likes it.....

Nope, don't miss it. We have Hulu for new stuff, Netflix for old stuff, iTunes for movies. We also pay to stream Hockey games.

My cable bill went from $260 a month to $95 a month. Netflix and Hulu are both $8 a month and hockey streams is $80 a year.

Nope. I have found a lot of what is on the TV is trash anyway. It also takes away family time. Way to much time is spent in front of the TV.

We only have "free' channels. We do watch some educational things online. We do not have any streaming. My kids read more, study more, play more and we are closer as a family. If we had cable, I know we would be sucked back in as I am not strong enough to say no! :rotfl2:

Thanks everyone. We went ahead and dropped dish tonight. Dh is going to get a hd antenna tomorrow for our local channels and then we are thinking of doing Amazon prime, anyone use that?

We use AEREO (www.aereo.com) for local channels but your city has to be eligible. Amazon is great but the word on the street is they are going up $40 a year.

We got rid of it for a year and a half and I never missed it. We just signed up again a few months ago and I honestly don't watch it! I'm still watching Netflix! I wish we didn't sign a 2 year contract or I'd cancel :-/

Gave up cable over two years ago. We have Netflix with a Roku. We do not miss cable at ALL. Every time we watch cable in a hotel, my husband and I look at each other and say, "this is worth $100 a month? No way!"

Our 3 year old dd doesn't know any different. She thinks it's odd that at her grandparents you have to wait for a certain time to watch a show when at home that show is readily available whenever you are ready to watch it. Which happens to be a feature of cutting the cord that her dad and I also like.

We were like others. Decided to try going without cable for a few months to see if we could. That has been 27 months ago and we have no plans of going back. Eight bucks per month for Netflix vs $100+ for cable. Cable loses.

We've been without cable since 2009, and I still miss it a lot. We are saving $1000 a year, however, and have small children in our home so it is worth it to us.

The things I miss the most are football (we get whatever games are on network TV but I can never watch Monday Night Football), TLC (although some of those shows are now on Netflix), HGTV, and BBC America. It's especially frustrating during the Olympics because you can't watch any of online coverage unless you have a cable provider, and nearly all of our favorite sports are not on network TV.
I also really, really miss having a DVR.

Cancelled cable this past Oct. and I personally miss it terribly. With that being said my cheap side likes having the extra $100 a month that's hitting the kids 529 plan a little more.

I bought a couple Roku boxes and we use netflix and a digital antenna (gets around 35 OTA channels)

We gave up cable many years ago. Probably close to 10 years. I think technically we have it because of the internet cable bundle, but it is not hooked up. We have had netflix now and then. We have it presently as a gift to the kids for the winter. Once things start to warm up it will go away again. If we want to see something in particular we take full advantage of our local library.

Those of you who gave up cable or satellite do you miss it?

We are thinking of giving up ours and want to hear about your experiences.

We have netflix already.

Nope, basic cable for us, plus netflix and amazon prime. We have a google tv (vizio box) to stream these, and we love it. It also streams youtube and vimeo.

Don't miss it one bit, and our pocketbook has thanked us. Also got rid of the home phone, newspaper, and magazine subscriptions. :wave2:

i don't miss it at all. we use cable internet, but not tv. i have netflix & hulu+ for that. and drama fever online. and youtube. :)

I dropped it about a year ago. Don't miss it at all. I just watch our DVDs. It was a bummer not being able to watch the Superbowl, but of well no big loss. I just can't take watching all of those commercials.

Do you have high speed internet at home? Fox streamed the SuperBowl for free off their website and through Apps on devices.

I want to dump cable, but My problem is internet. The way my cable company has the cable and internet bundled, its like the cable is almost free.

How much do you pay for cable/Internet bundle?
