give a day..project linus question

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the one that's in the Walt Disney area (when you put it in search) only require one? That's the one we signed up for, and I think it was just one each. You can check it to see. I'm not planning on starting on ours until next month (too busy with work right now).

We did the one in Orlando. You have to make two of the fleece. They need to be about 60 inches long with 6 inch fringe on each side (2 yards total each). My Girl Scout troop and their families worked on them and I was able to turn in 62!:cool1: Two days later I saw the blankets we made on TV when they were showing some of the Haitian Children that arrived. It was nice to see that they were keeping kids warm so soon.

Check the clearance areas too. I found fleece on the clearance racks at Joann for much cheaper per yard, $3-6, which was just as cute as the full priced ones!:goodvibes

Just to add that although we need to make 6 per person, our local Project Linus wants single layer, not double, and they have 3 different sizes. I tried to make about 1/3 of them in the teen size, and picked boys prints for many of them too.

I got fleece for only $4 for 1.5 yds at Walmart. At Joann Fabrics they had remants for less than that. They were slightly larger than a yard. We figure 5 blankets plus the rotary cutter and mat cost us less than $30.

OK, just to get this straight, cause I'd love to make blankets for project linus. A blanket can be "donated" to any of the Project Linus chapters and as long as you register first on the Disney website, they'll accept it for the Disney Day??? And one more time, how did you guys find the right chapter that accepts only one per???? Thanks again

I think it's easiest to work through a local chapter, but I know that's not an option for everyone.

Scroll through this thread, folks have posted websites and/or cities for several different chapters you could work through. For example the website link I posted earlier is for a Virginia chapter located in zip code 22923. Just enter that zip code on the give a day search site, and Project Linus should pop up on the volunteer opportunities page for you.

I'd definitely suggest choosing the chapter you want to work through and getting a response from them before you start making your blanket(s) though. Some do have very specific requirements.

We made 2 each for the Macon, GA location and they were very thankful. They only require single and the small 36" size is fine.

I never looked into Give-A-Day, and I had no idea that Project Linus was on there. I've been crocheting small blankets for animal shelters for the past two years -- I can certainly make one for Project Linus.

The Huntsville Al, chapter only requires one blanket. It has to be a bigger blanket but it's totally worth it! The one near us wanted 2 blankets per person plus pics of everyone working on the blanket. We're really not pic people. and it's hard to get a pic of "Everyone" when there's only 2 working on the blankets. =)

Mind if I ask which chapter you're donating to?? I'd love to do a few crochet blankets!!

It is the El Paso Texas chapter. Also, for the OP..no, you can't just send blankets off to any chapter. Only some are participating and they all have different rules, plus you have to sign up with a link provided by the chapter for it to count for GAD.

None of my local chapters are participating, so I have been looking at some of these. This zip code for VA, is not longer accepting fleece blankets, FYI. They must have be overflowing with fleece at this point, which is great for the kids!!!

Erika, if you find one that is in Minnesota, let me know, this would be a GREAT thing to be able to do from home.

No such luck. I found a place that wants help assembling or bundling something like it (doesn't say fleece though) but they don't want young kids.

We need cookies and bars to provide to our volunteers. You may bring 2 dozen per family member of any bar/ cookie. Have them wrapped for freezer storage and marked with the date and ingredients list.

I just signed up with the Macon, Ga group. You have to get the blankets in by Feb 14th, but they can be 30x36 2 per person, and the only restriction is to use 100% cotton or fleece and quilts must be 3 layers.

What is this fleece business and can they be made by someone who is sewing deficient?

Did you get a confirmation from them? I am having a hard time finding a place still willing to accept the blankets. I have been looking for over 2 weeks now and contacted several.

I was hoping to do my local chapter but they were allowing the blankets to be sent in and have way too many now.

yes. the lady heading it up emailed me personally, not a form letter. I needed the mailing address, and she got back to me very promptly.

I'm surprised at all the differant types, sizes and amounts Project Linus has. I signed up with the one in Springfield Mo. Blankets must be at least 36x36 up to twin size. Fleece must be only one thickness. Two blankets per person also. They're within driving distance and darn but there is a Hobby Lobby , a Joann's and Hancocks within blocks of there. I will need to replenish my fabric stash ya' know :goodvibes

Wow, my mom has been doing PL for years (she does crib sized quilts) I should mention this to her!
