Girls wearing hats in school

Ok, the Alamo I understand, but at Buffalo Wild Wings??? Who are we respecting? :confused3

:lmao:

I can't say that I expect patrons of Buffalo Wild Wings to remove their ball caps, but in other restaurants the only hats I wanna see displayed on patrons heads is these:

Are women supposed to remove their hats during the National Anthem or just men? Does it matter if it is a fancy hat like at the Derby or a ball cap at the ball park? Ball caps removed but fashon caps not?

What is the standard for women, hats and national anthems? :confused3

I always remove my O's hat during the anthem. :thumbsup2

I haven't read this whole thing yet so I'm sure we've veered off topic lol but my opinion is in school if the rule is no hats then that goes for EVERYONE.

It does not say "no baseball caps" it says no hats (unless it does say no baseball caps... I'm just assuming it says hats)

as you can see from the OP allowing the girls to wear hats and the boys aren't will cause problems... it already is causing problems and they had to look up the rule. there are enough problems with the school system, lets not throw a rule that only applies to half the student body into the works.

As far as hats in school, what they say goes. We all acknowledge that. As far as men and women wearing hats indoors - it has always been proper for women to wear them, and men to remove them. When did that change? Must we do away with tradition, little by little, for the sake of fairness?

It ain't my tradition, it's just plain ol' respect.

You still haven't said WHY it's disrespectful. Because someone told you it is? The funny thing is that I actually remove my hat while indoors and so does my son. But, for the life of me, I can't tell you why, except for the fact that others said it's the thing to do. :confused3

Coz my momma raised me right, that's why. :rolleyes1

If they lead to a double standard, yes. You (general you) can't fight for equality and then say but in this case we want different rules. It is just as sexist to say a man can't wear a hat indoors simply because he is a man as it is to say a woman can't work here simply because she is a woman. Both are equally arbitrary and wrong.

Either it is proper for everyone to wear a hat in doors or for no one to wear a hat indoors. I don't care which it is but choose one.

You took the words out of my mouth. :worship: It was tradition for women to not have careers outside of the home at one time. You can't only change or hold on to the ones that benefit you.

Watch out now, I don't exactly wanna see you wanderin' around in a dress 'n heels! :rotfl:

Where's Ides when we need him? ;)

Someone PLEASE explain to my why it is considered rude for a man to wear a hat inside, but not rude for a woman. That's just stupid with a capital S.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I disagree. We can't have totall equality for men and women nor should we, IMO. Regarding this particular subject - I think a man should remove his hat when dining or indoors. I do not believe that women should. Why do I believe that way? Dunno. I just do. :upsidedow I think some rules/traditions/etc. should remain timeless and that is one of them.

Most schools frown on anything that can be interpreted as gangsta or gang. Hats worn cockeyed, backward, with scarves etc are very big in this genre, and not just for boys, for the girls as well. Pants worn low, boxers bunched up above waist line etc.

My daughter has a shirt that is from World of Warcraft. It says

I fight like a girl

That is a Warrior and Hunter on the shirt. But, because it says "Fight" it isnt allowed.

I agree with all of this. And if 'double standard' means there are different rules for men and women from time to time, that is fine by me. Hat wearing etiquette is one of them.

The standard rule of thumb is men remove their hats, while women don't.

This standard was set years ago, when it was typical for people to dress up to go to any function. Most, if not all men wore some type of hat. Along the sames lines, most women would also wear hat, but the difference being that most of these hats were very delicate more of an accessory to their outfit then a hat to shade them from the sun. The actual size of the hat wouldn't allow for the hat to just sit on their head, it had to be attached with pins. Because of the times and the style of dress, both in clothing and hairstyles, many of these hats, once placed on the head, if you tried to remove it, the way the hair was dressed would be destroyed. Because of this, women wearing their hats indoor and while the nation anthem was being played/song became acceptable. And continues today. Men remove their hats, women don't (have to).

Only if voting is one of them too. Double standards based on tradition being ok and all.

I too hate all this "progress" made in the name of equality. While we are at it maybe all those black kids should get back into their own school.

That second part was sarcasm.

Do some of you people work for RunDisney?

ETA: I am not comparing voting to wearing hats but to create different rules for people based on gender, race, or anything else for no physiological reason is backwards and outdated. Of course most etiquette is just something made up so that busy-bodies can have something to complain about anyway.

OP here, I agree with this 100% there will be no more wearing hats in class for her. I was more concerned about outside school and wondering if my understanding of hat etiquette was old fashion. I appreciate everyones remarks, I still contend there is a difference between a lady wearing a hat as part of her outfit vs a man (or women) wearing a baseball cap indoors (ie at a restaurant or in church.) Next week we will see lots of gorgeous hats on ladies attending the Royal wedding and I'm sure they know what is proper and not. I just wanted to make sure I was teaching my children proper etiquette for real life social situations. I'll just change my teaching to include unless otherwise directed by a dress code ;).

Allison

When your daughters attend royal weddings it will be completely appropriate for them to wear a hat indoors.

But the society we live in is denegrating slowly to incorporate other peoples views of culture.

Denegrating to incorporate other peoples views - that sounds a tad narrow-minded.

Okay, but do I say Yes Ma'am or Yes Sir?
